Maka and Soul woke up two days after the war. hundreds of miesters and weapons died, the city was quiet and desserted as many mourn over their loss of those who fought. Maka and Soul were under the care of Spirit and Kami. Spirit and Kami had little to no injuries since they were with a larger group of miesters during the war

Maka and Tsubaki went into a deep depressive state, they wouldn't eat or sleep all day.Maka's nightmares came back, often of flashbacks of Black Stars death. Soul was was with Maka at every moment

The following week they cremated Black Stars body, she feinted at the front doors of where his ashes waited for them. Tsubaki couldn't let go of the urn, she didn't let anyone touch her or the urn that held a whole life. Black Stars life

When Maka woke up was when Tsubaki finally let go of the urn letting Maka hold him.

Maka couldn't cry, she felt numb to any feeling. She couldn't believe that was all that was left of him. She begged for it to be a sick prank and he will bust the door down to hug her tightly, she would give everything to get one more tight hug from him, a hand shake, a forehead bump, a kick, a laugh. Everything that came with him, she wanted to see him one last time again

She knew she had to grieve, she knew she need to keep living. Live the life he couldn't, she accepted she needed to keep going but knew that the pain will last until her last breath.

"Tsubaki" Maka said softly, she continued to cry quietly as she hugged her body, Maka stood up and stumbled a little from how fragile she became. Soul helped her to Tsubaki, she kneeled down and grabbed her hands and held them tightly

"we have to keep living... you have to keep living. We'll do it together" Maka said with more confidence

"What if I can't?"

"We have to, and when its our time. We will meet him again, our souls will see him again" Tsubaki sniffed trying to catch her breath, she nodded in agreement

"We will"

They held a big memorial with pictures of all those who had fallen, the whole city surrounded the school holding candles. Maka dissociated the whole memorial.

After a month Maka and Soul returned to Japan. Soul tried his best to focus on his students but couldn't help but feel depressed, he was in pain as well at the loss of his best friend with Maka but didn't take the time to talk about it himself.

Maka tried her best in her missions, she didn't talk about her grievance either. She only let it out through crying, she never had to explain herself everyone already knew.

Maka and Soul were quiet most of the time unless they asked each other what they wanted for dinner or to drink something. They sat in the living room not doing anything, they were comfortable in their silence holding each other

"Soul" Maka said as she sat up looking at him "Are you okay?"

Soul felt dumb founded at the question, no one had asked any of them how they felt unless if he had felt any physical pain. He didn't know when or how but he began to cry, tears falling back to back not being able to stop. His throat hurt and his eyes stinged

"I'm not" he cried "I know we were unconscious for the majority of it but I've recently been dreaming about it. The war, the people we killed" Maka stayed quiet listening

"I feel so guilty for surviving, I'm mad that I couldn't stop the bullets, I don't believe it sometimes that he is dead" Soul cried harder, he felt embarrassed to cry but he felt safe being by Maka not feeling an ounce of judgement

"I'm sorry"

"it's not your fault" Maka said quietly Soul cried for another hour or so, she sat quietly besides him understanding he hasn't cried since the day of the war
