𝖭𝖺𝗆𝖾: 𝖵𝖺𝗅𝗂𝖺𝗇𝖺 𝖱𝖾𝖾𝖽

𝖣𝖺𝗍𝖾: 𝖲𝖾𝗉 𝟤𝗇𝖽

I write my name and date on the top of the classwork she gives us. She just taught the class how to understand periodic trends. I look down and read the first section of questions.

𝖶𝗁𝗂𝖼𝗁 𝖺𝗍𝗈𝗆 𝗂𝗇 𝖾𝖺𝖼𝗁 𝗉𝖺𝗂𝗋 𝗁𝖺𝗌 𝖺 𝗅𝖺𝗋𝗀𝖾𝗋 𝖺𝗍𝗈𝗆𝗂𝖼 𝗋𝖺𝖽𝗂𝗎𝗌?

I sigh and start circling the answers.

𝖺. 𝖢𝖺 𝗈𝗋 𝖭𝗂

𝖻. 𝖫𝗂 𝗈𝗋 𝖪

I quickly answer the question before moving to the next section... then the next section. I finally reached the last one.

𝖶𝗁𝖺𝗍 𝗂𝗌 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝗉𝖾𝗋𝗂𝗈𝖽 𝗍𝗋𝖾𝗇𝖽 𝗈𝖿 𝖾𝗅𝖾𝖼𝗍𝗋𝗈𝗇𝖾𝗀𝖺𝗍𝗂𝗏𝗂𝗍𝗒? 𝖨𝗇𝖼𝗋𝖾𝖺𝗌𝖾𝗌 𝗀𝗈𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝗅𝖾𝖿𝗍 𝗍𝗈 𝗋𝗂𝗀𝗁𝗍, 𝖽𝖾𝖼𝗋𝖾𝖺𝗌𝖾𝗌 𝗀𝗈𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝖽𝗈𝗐𝗇.

I answer the final question and start banging my pencil against the side of the desk. I look around the class, and everyone is still working. I looked up at the clock, and noticed it took me less than 10 minutes to complete. My eyes travel from the clock to Ms. Jain... and, of course, she is looking at me.

She waves for me to come to her, and I sigh, grabbing my paper and walking to her desk. She does not say anything to me, just takes my paper and slides another to me. I grab it and walk back to my desk. Glancing at the paper, I realize she gave me the next unit's work on Nomenclature. The students will not be learning this for another two weeks.

I write the header again and look at the questions. We have 30 minutes left in class. I finished this one in 5 minutes. I miswrote one answer to see if she would notice. I tap my eraser repeatedly, and she looks up at me again. She does not give me a smile or show any signs of annoyance. She just waves me to her desk again. I grab the paper and stand in front of her. She takes the classwork but does not hand anything back. I turn to go back to my seat.

"Wait," I turn back around, and she has everything already graded. She points to the one I got wrong. "Answer," she says demandingly without looking up from my paper. The point of her pen lingers.

"RbSCN. Rubidium thiocyanate."

"Molecular Weight?" she asks, writing in my answer correctly. The worksheet doesn't ask for the molecular weight, so I know she's testing me.

I sigh, "143.55 grams per mole."

She points to a blank area on the paper. "Draw the 2D structure." I roll my eyes, leaning over her desk to draw the structure. She looks behind me, I guess, to see if anyone is looking at us. I do the same, and there's no one. Everyone is engrossed in their work. I look back at her, and she writes a 100 on the top of my paper. "Next time, answer it correctly if you know it."

"Next time, don't put a college question on a high school worksheet."

She smirks at me. "Noted." She nods back to my desk. "Go sit... and no, you cannot write or get on your phone."

I turn around and walk back to my desk. There is nothing for me to do, so I chew on the end of my pencil, finding things around the room to zone into. 3D structure molecules. A giant poster of the periodic table. Single posters on different elements. Silver. Gold. The list goes on. None of this is really interesting to me, except...her eyes. My eyes find hers, and she stares back at me. Neither of us looks away until someone in the class sneezes.
