Brooklyn
Months have passed, four and a half to be exact, and Valiana has yet to receive the call for a new heart. I eventually bullied the hospital staff into giving my friend a larger space. A room with a larger bed and more relaxed vibes than that tiny death penalty room. I felt terrible for not missing home. I was completely at ease in Val's company. Even if Valiana didn't get a heart in time, it felt like my responsibility to make sure she was comfortable. I refused to think about the reality of her situation, and only thought about stuff that made me happy. The subject of death seemed far too morbid for my little mind.
Laughter, her laughter was so beautiful I never wanted it to stop. It was scary knowing that at any moment, it could be the end. Doctors had come in to say that another heart donation had fallen through. I decided to take her mind off of it by bringing her to the children's wing. Right now, we were playing the game 'Who am I?' with a little girl named Nicola.
"Do I have wings?" Valiana asks Nico.
"Yes, you do!" Nico says giggling. Val is an eagle, Nico is a banana, and I have no idea what I am.
"Am I a hawk?" Val asks, getting excited.
"Nope! My turn!" Nico gets excited. Val has to wait until everyone goes to guess again.
"Am I a food?"
"Yes, but you won't get full from it," I tell her. She starts to think before asking a question.
"Can I get a hint?" she asks with puppy dog eyes. It was so adorable.
"Yes, your food had lots of potassium," Val says matter of factly.
"What's potassium?" Nico tilts her head confused.
"Val! Why did you give her such a terrible hint? She's only 6. How is she supposed to know what potassium is? My gosh!" I say, pushing Val a little.
"Ow!" she screams dramatically. "She hurt me!" she turns to Nico with a smirk before turning back to me. "I think we should get her back."
"Yeah, I think so too," Nico smirks back at her. I don't even get a chance to ask what they are about to do before I am attacked with tickles.
"Agh! Stop!" The tickles both hurt and make me laugh. They keep tickling me until one of Nico's nurses comes into the room.
"Nico, it's time for your nap," the nurse says. She normally lets us stay with Nico because her parents were never there. It's not that they didn't care, it's just that they had to pay for her cancer treatment which was a lot of money, so they worked a lot. Valiana offered to pay, but they got mad and said no.
"Come on, Nico! It's nap time." I say, picking her up from her table she has in her room and bringing her to her hospital bed. I tuck her in before kissing her head.
"I don't want to nap. I want to play with you and Val. 20 more minutes?" Nico pleads with teary eyes.
"We'll be back, Love. Once you take a nap, and I can leave my room again, we'll come back." Valiana wheels her chair over to the other side of Nico's bed.
"Okay, now say bye to Valiana and Brooklyn." The nurse says, walking over to Nico to give her her medication. Nico sadly waves bye as we leave.
As soon as I push Val out of the room, I start running while pushing her. We had to make it to the food court quickly because this is the only time they have decent food. "Hurry! Before it's all gone!" Val rushes me even though her big ass is why I'm going so slow.
"You try pushing a giant. I'm going as fast as I can." I say in between breaths. We finally make it to the lunch court just in time, after almost knocking over a couple of people.
