A Maiden's Song

On this island that I call home
I do weep and wail
For the chance to join my father
And heave up the heavy sails

Feel the rope in my hands
Feel the salt upon my brow
To heap my palms with calluses
And make my father proud

Darling maiden sweet and faire
Kindest eyes and flowing hair
Trick your foe but beware
Of the cost that's beyond repair

I know the burden that my mother bares
Forced to watch her child
Take to the spear and snare

Long hours she sits in silence
From ever far away
Seeing her daughter
Practice those deadly blades

Darling maiden strong and just
Do what you know you must
But take care and heed her words
lest you stray from the earth

Long hours I stay awake at night
Doubting my strengths
And the dreams that wish to fly

But now I am older
Grown tall, brave, and bold
What lies before me

What does the future hold
