My hands shook as I drove the car. Elliot kept calling and calling and texting and texting but I didn't even pick up my phone. As soon as I pulled into the driveway of the house I jumped out of the car taking Arlo with me.
"Lay here for a minute sweetheart."
I put him back on the mat that was on the living room floor and ran upstairs. I flung the closet door open shoving clothes into a bag.
I went to Arlos room and put some more clothes into his diaper bag. I ran back down stairs and into the kitchen grabbing the containers of formula that sat out on the counter. I ended up grabbing a few more bottles for him as well.
I put the bags on my shoulder and went to grab Arlo. I picked him up and grabbed the small stuffed elephant Cate and Tyler had gotten him when he was born.
I went out of the house slamming the door and throwing all of the bags into the back of the car. I buckled Arlo in and got in myself. Then the thought hit me. Where was I going to go? I mean I really only had 2 options. My family home or Cate and Tyler's.
I couldn't...I won't go to my family home and Cate and Tyler are out of town visiting his grandparents. I really am stuck.
I backed out of the driveway and started to drive. Honestly not quite sure to where. I drove around the streets thinking and thinking about where to go. That's when I saw him.
I pulled over to the side of the road and waved my hand out the window.
"Lakes!"
He looked around confused for a second before spotting me. He jogged over to the car window and leaned his forearms on the edge.
"Well well well, look who we have here."
He had a cigarette in his mouth taking another puff.
"Put that out."
I motioned go the back seat where Arlo sat babbling and spitting.
"You had your kid?"
I rolled my eyes.
"No I stole that one."
He laughed deeply and dropped the cigarette on the ground.
"No judgment here."
"Here, get in."
I moved a couple things that sat in the passenger seat. Without another word Lakes rounded the car and hopped in.
"Where's your honey at?"
I clenched my jaw.
"Work. Do you have a house?"
He raised an eyebrow at me.
"Hell no, that's way to expensive, got a studio though. Why?"
I sighed and dropped my head.
"Could I...could we stay with you just for a night or two?"
He thought for a moment.
"Never mind it's ok, that was too much to ask, we will stay at a hotel."
He put up his hand almost like he was telling me to stop talking.
"You are not spending the night in a hotel with a kid. Yeah you can stay with me for a couple days."
He sat back in the seat pulling his long hair back into a ponytail.
"Thank you so much..."
He bit his cheek.
"Go ahead, ask."
"What did he do?"
"He's getting married."
He looked at me oddly.
"Do you not want to marry him?"
"No, I mean yes, I do want to marry him but, he's not getting married to me. He's getting married to some chick."
His eyes widened as he took in what I said.
"What the fuck?!"
"Hush! There's a child present."
"He's like 2 months old! He can't understand cuss words!"
I smiled and hunched down in my seat.
"Give me the address, or tell me where to go, I'm tired."
He sat up more straight and began to navigate me to his place. Surprisingly it only took about 10 minutes. Probably would have went faster is we cut down the arguing, but he's an idiot and I'm hot headed. Not quite sure how this friendship even came to be. Most the time we just fight over very simple things that shouldn't be argued over.
He helped me carry some of the bags as I carried Arlo. He unlocked the door to a very tidy and clean studio. With his appearance I would have guessed he would live in more of a mess.
"Welcome to my humble abode."
I lightly patted Arlos back and bounced him looking around.
"It's very clean."
"What's that supposed to mean?!"
"Nothing nothing."
I made a makeshift "crib" on the couch setting pillows all around the edges in a square. I placed one of his blankets down over top and then sat him down in as well.
He's only a couple months old so he doesn't move much in his sleep. While I was tending to Arlo, Lakes changed into pajamas and folded back some of the blankets on the bed.
I grabbed one of the pillows of his bed and dropped it down on the floor beside the couch.
"What are you doing?"
I grabbed the throw blanket off the back of the couch and began to lay down on the floor.
"Going to sleep?"
He shook his head.
"No no no, you are not sleeping on the floor."
"Well it's your place and your bed. I already invaded your privacy enough. I'm not going to sleep on you bed too. And you are definitely not sleeping on the floor."
He sighed in exasperation.
"We can share the bed dummy."
"Are you ok with that? I know some people won't barley even let you touch things is their house."
"Obviously I'm ok with it, so get up off the floor and come lie down."
I kept the pillow where it was just in case Arlo fell off the couch. I layed down on the left side of the bed and Lakes on the right.
"You don't snore do you?"
I wacked him in the face with a pillow. His laughter slowly faded as we both started to fall asleep.
I wondered about Elliot. Where is he? What is he doing?
Is he worried about me?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
