Ninjago was such a bright and beautiful place, with luscious trees and jungles that spread across the island to the deep and rich blues of the ocean and the streams through the city. Ninjago was beautiful no matter the time of day.
As the sun rises, it casts bright, sunny rays onto the water; waking everyone up with a fresh smile. But when the sun goes down, the sunset expands across the horizon until the yellow sky fades to black. But that's your favourite part of the day, you think. When the lights along the street glow, when the individual candles flicker in the breeze. The world is only lit by small light sources, but oh boy, does the whole city illuminate.
You could and have sat on the rooftops for hours just basking in the glow of night, listening to some tunes while you let the day wash over you. Thinking of all the things that got you down or brightened you up. You didn't always sit out there alone though, sometimes you were joined by one or two of your friends.
You remember when they had all surprised you for your birthday, they knew the exact spot you went to and set it up to look all nice and photogenic. The only person you could thank for that was Cole, he was the one that often joined you up on the ledges. He'd bring a record or two over, have his mech parked and ready to play some tunes.
It was always calming, even if there was technically a giant robot constantly behind you like a golem. You grew to be close with Cole, you'd talk about anything from ninja business to school to your favourite records. He was so easy to talk to and be around, it was only time you two became something more.
And it was great, you practically spent every minute of every day together; you were even considered worse than Jay and Nya, and that was saying something. You were inseparable, like two peas in a pod. And it only got better, you were both amazing fighters individually but together? Together you could take on a whole army if you needed to, you just hoped you wouldn't have to see the day.
It was August when the first attack happened, you and Cole had just celebrated your third anniversary the day before. It was just a small group of snakes, how hard could it be? You fought Lord Garmadom, some scaley snakes shouldn't be that difficult, right?
A few weeks after the first wave came another, then another. It was becoming too much. Ninjago never had time to rebuild itself, more buildings were becoming derelict, and houses were being left abandoned. The secret ninja team fought hard, but the snakes fought harder.
Lord Garmadom and Master Wu had sacrificed themselves to save the group and held off the hordes of Serpentine; as they had come to be known. It was a hard battle, but without their choices, you don't think any of you would have made it out alive.
Lloyd took it the hardest, losing not only his father but his uncle and sensei too. You all tried your best to comfort him, still fighting against evil and protecting what was left of Ninjago. But more of the city fell under the Serpentine's control, it was becoming harder and harder to keep up the front of hope.
Kai was next, he wanted revenge; the hothead. He snuck out at night and charged the Serpentine with no plan, it wasn't until Zane was alerted by Kai's life signals that you knew something was up. Though sadly, it was already too late.
With the loss of Kai, Lloyd planned an all-out attack. You had lost too many people: friends, family and civilians. It all happened so fast, sneaking into their base of operations, the fight between both sides, seeing everyone you love be mercilessly slain by those reptile freaks.
Cole had saved you, he had been the only reason you escaped. The Serpentine had surrounded you both, there was an exit up above, through a hole in the window. Cole knew only one of you could make it, someone needed to fend off the bad guys and it had to be him. He had thrown you up high enough, watching carefully as you pulled yourself out the window.
You held out your hand for him, begging for him to jump and you'll catch him. But he refused. The Serpentine were getting closer, weapons raised at your boyfriend, "Go!" he yelled out. He kept screaming at you to leave, "Don't worry about me!"
"I-I'm not leaving you, Cole! Take my hand!" you leaned further through the already cracked window, hearing it splitting the more you leant. Cole was already fighting off the snakes, using his elemental powers to slow them down. But even he couldn't fight the hordes around him.
He turned to you with pleading eyes, "I love you." he smiled out. You had tears streaming down your bloodied cheeks, still begging him to join you. The Serpentine had jumped Cole, climbing over his body, swaying him left and right "GO!" his yell was muffled. This time...this time you listened to him.
That was all ten years ago. Ninjago didn't look the same anymore, you didn't see the fresh smiles from the rising sun nor did you see the city illuminate at night. It was all just a baron wasteland now, some Serpentine still lingered, many had been taken out by rebel forces or other tribes seeking to claim land. It was like an apocalypse.
You ran across what little rooftops were left, most builds had sunk or crumbled to the ground; mother nature had handled the rest. You found yourself on a hilltop, looking over what was once a bustling city full of life. For once you weren't alone when coming here.
You now lead a small group of heroes who fight the Serpentine, they'll pay for what they took away from you. The stones lay idle by your feet, some limp and wilting flowers fall to the side of the rocks. You had made a little memorial for the old Ninjago, perhaps as a reminder of how good life had been before all the chaos happened.
You had carved out names on the rocks, names of your friends and family. The ninja had their own separate place, it looked over the docks. It perfectly aligned with the sunrises and sunsets. You stood in front of it now, holding back the tears as you stared at one name in particular; your crew stood solemnly behind you.
"Did you know him?" a young girl stepped forward, the hoodie she wore was in tatters but it served her well enough, "Personally?" she added. You didn't take your eyes off of the graves, "I knew them all," you murmured, "At least, I thought I did...once...a long time ago."
It had been so long now, so many years and yet you still couldn't believe you were the only one left. You weren't even a good ninja compared to the others. You didn't have Cole's strength or Zane's smarts or Jay's creative thinking. You never possessed Kai's confidence or Nya's strategic mind; you weren't even a good leader like Lloyd. Yet here you stood before them...alive.
"What were they like?" the girl beside you whispered, mindful of your grief. Some crumpled copy of a smile crossed your face, "They were going to change the world." you mused. The sun started to set, and the usually dark and gloomy sky was full of colour but for only a moment. You collapsed to your knees, listening to the breeze that engulfed you.
You just needed a minute, all you wanted was a minute of peace. A chance to be with him, to sit by Cole and see his smile once again. To hear him talk nonstop about his favourite record that had been released that week. But as the world crumbled down around you, as the city burned, you realised you'd never get that luxury again.
