That husky voice sent a jolt through her chest, yanking her out of her nap. Her eyes fluttered open, meeting the familiar smile of her best friend.
"I bet you saw your lovely father."
She smiled back at him, and he crouched beside her, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Then, without a word, he handed her his credit card.
She frowned. "What's this for?"
"After the mess you made at school, he'll probably forbid dinner and lock you in the basement. Maybe even whip you too. Am I right?"
She gave a nonchalant nod.
"When your father stormed into school after you beat up the principal and ran off, I told him you stole my money. So, he compensated me with a check." A mischievous glint flickered in his eyes. "Guess how many zeros were on it."
She grinned at the thought, reveling in the rare moment when someone had outplayed her father. "How much!?"
"One hundred thousand dollars—all yours. Who's the best?" he declared with his usual calm, though there was an unmistakable hint of pride.
With a delighted gasp, she threw herself into his arms.
"Of course, you, genius!" Her hug knocked him off balance, making him lie back against the cold ground.
"Argh—Y/N, my shoulder..." Sana winced, gripping his left shoulder.
Her excitement faded. "Am I that strong? Let me see."
She unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a deep bruise spreading across his skin. Her expression hardened—like a mother ready to scold her reckless son.
"Was this the price of all that money?" Her voice was cold, but her fingers brushed against him with careful tenderness.
Sana cupped her face, his warm hands pressing against her tense jaw.
"I don't care if it costs me a broken shoulder—because I'm your hero, right?"
She gave a small nod, but deep inside, an uneasy feeling twisted in her gut.
The beast who had hurt her so many times before... might one day turn his wrath on the only person she had left.

"I'm sorry, Sana, for always causing you trouble. You need to get it checked, okay?"
He only let out a low, throaty "Hmm" as she pressed a soft kiss to his bruise. She blamed herself for hurting him, especially when he quietly turned and walked away.
Then suddenly—
"Argh—not again..."
A sharp gasp tore from her lips as she clutched her chest, her fingernails digging into her skin. The pain in her lungs had worsened since June. At first, it had been bearable, a dull ache she could ignore. But now—it was suffocating. Her vision blurred, her body trembled, and hot tears spilled down her cheeks.
A feverish heat surged through her, as if molten lava ran in place of her blood, paralyzing her limbs. She couldn't move. She couldn't even call for help—her father had confiscated her phone.
"Argh... ah—h-help me!"
Her broken voice barely carried past her lips. Who would hear her out here? Who would even care?
Am I really this pathetic? Dying under this tree like a stray dog...?
"P-please... someone... anyone..."
She wailed in agony, clinging to the last shred of hope that someone—anyone—would come. But the only response was the whisper of the wind wrapping around her shivering body. Goosebumps covered her skin while a raging inferno burned within her.
Then, out of nowhere, a voice echoed in her mind.
❝ Life is an experience. No matter what happens, never, ever question your existence. There is a purpose to everything—no coincidences. Whether you walk a good or bad path, whether you face joy or sorrow, know that wisdom lies at the core. Collect it. Treasure it. ❞
What was that...?
Maybe I really am dying... just like back then.
Night fell, and still, no one came.
A violent surge of energy coiled deep inside her chest, trapped, suffocating her from within. No matter how hard she coughed, it wouldn't escape. The bitter taste of blood filled her mouth. Her lungs refused to take in air.
The moonlight drifted gently through the tree branches, slipping between her trembling fingers as she raised her hand toward the sky.
Her eyelids grew heavy. Her arm started to fall—
But then, warm fingers suddenly wrapped around hers.
Large. Strong. Familiar.
Without hesitation, she gripped them back, entwining her fingers with the stranger's as if she had known him forever.
A teasing voice broke the silence.
"Having a bad time~? Well, you're not human after all!!"
