track #13 : Drew Barrymore – SZA
"There is only one kind of shock worse than the totally unexpected: the expected for which one has refused to prepare."
——
Ace glanced sideways at the screen of his cellphone when it was illuminated with a hidden text message icon from Cassie that he'd gotten two minutes ago. He cupped his hand near his mouth to toss his second pill for the day into his mouth, raised his cup to his lips and swallowed down a mouthful of ice, cold water.
Knowing that Cassie still had his number was diverting. His pride wouldn't let him text her, and it'd been almost a month of nothingness between them. He wouldn't say he missed her, because he really didn't, and if he did, they probably would've been laying up in his bed somewhere. His actions showed the truth. He'd been so busy chasing after stacks of money that she was the last person on his mind. He was too busy to deal with her, or to talk about where they left off, or to entertain the bullshit any further. It took some weeks for him to realize that.
But, interest bounced through him. He tossed the plastic cup into the trash can across from him and stared at the screen for a while longer before he finally decided to use his thumb to unlock his phone to check the message.
