In a well-lit room, fiery like the sun, Samantha typed away at her computer.
Usually, homework would be the first thing she scratched off her to-do list. However, the moment her phone rumbled with news, she had to investigate it herself.
The subject of well-written, ecstatic paragraphs and many open windows to her computer was her father. Specifically his return as a hero.
All it took was one public appearance in the right place to stir the hive. Hundreds of thousands of people eagerly awaited news since his appearance in a new costume.
Her father was smart and calculative, so she doubted this was a slip on his end. No, he wanted to be seen, and he certainly wanted his hero status to be known.
Now she looked on at the aftermath as he trended across every media outlet in the world. They buzzed over questions with no answers, one being if he was doing this to redeem his infidelity.
It was all nonsense and speculation, Samantha knew that. Nonetheless, she found the many articles popping up about him to be interesting.
He never spoke of his past to her, and for good reason too, because the legends and theories surrounding him were downright horrifying.
Hit. Hero or villain? Samantha mulled over a bold headline.
From one paragraph to another, she read it all, his legend. Taking in all this information at once was jarring, but the revelation was something sorely needed.
She always wondered what the rough patch in their relationship was from, and for years she speculated it was like any other marriage. However, she had been wrong for doing so.
People called him a monster, a cold-blooded killer that came for their beloved family members, while others detested him and his ways, saying his way of doing business wasn't something a hero did.
But to that small minority, there was an overwhelming majority, people whose lives were affected personally by him.
Unlike the seething accusations and opinions, this group of people had evidence and passion.
One video popped up displaying an ongoing fight on a bustling street, said fight was so fast and destructive that no one really knew what was going on. It was until the very tail end of the video did a villain appear.
It was a woman, she was covered in smoke and slumped on the asphalt, unconscious.
The fight took place at triple-digit speeds, and with the villain taken care of, the unlikely hero who dealt with her now had to deal with her mess.
A long line of support beams had collapsed, leaving an oncoming bullet train at risk of derailment.
However, before the railway fell to the monumental weight, her father appeared. He was younger with literal tonnes of concrete and metal resting over his shoulders.
That was a turning point in online speculation as well as his popularity. And judging by the year the video was taken, he was twenty-one years old. The age when she was born.
A year before that, he retired, throwing the public into a mess of confusion and curiosity. And again, he never really told anyone why he chose to leave.
But the more she read, the more she questioned if he actually left because after that there was nothing more than unconfirmed sightings of the ex-hero.
Most of it could be chalked down as delusion, and the rest could be wild hoaxes. But that was the point to him, you never truly knew if he was there or not.
