The next few days seemed like a trance for me. It was like déjà vu. I felt like there was some sort of never ending loop that was happening.
Every day during lunch, the halos would reappear and some would get darker than others. The black halo appeared under the same person every day, Matt Daehler.
We had moved seats in biology so he was no longer my partner but I would always get the feeling like someone from the back of the classroom was watching me.
I didn't know what the halos meant but I needed to find out. Sometimes when the halos would appear, they would change so rapidly it was like a rainbow blur above someone's head.
I had gotten so used to these halo's, it was dizzying when they would go away. It was like something was leaving me every time the lights went out. Like I was in the dark.
Stiles was working to get a copy of the French legends book from a book store. The book was apparently not even sold in California at all. It was a book from France written by someone named Gerald Argene.
I was more frequented at the Stilinski household than my own. My mother and I never talked about what happened when Derek visited two weeks ago. She was more at work than at home.
Stiles and I were working on uncovering the other emissary and I was trying to contact Derek after three days of radio silence.
We were supposed to be working on how to control my new powers but apparently he left. I went to his abandoned house and only noticed an odd smell.
-----
It was early Saturday morning and I was woken up by my mother talking frantically into the phone.
"How much to post bail? I don't have ten thousand dollars." She said as she went down the stairs and into the kitchen.
I got up and walked down stairs in my groggy state and we made eye contact.
"I have to go. I'll call you back Noah. Thank You," She hung up the phone and stared at me a bit longer before speaking. "Derek's been arrested for murder."
"What? How?" I asked, clearly in shock.
"They found the other half of his sister's body on the property of his house. Scott and Stiles turned him in. Honey, I'm sorry," She said as she wrapped her arms around me in an embrace.
"Did he really do it?" I asked as tears rolled down my face.
"I don't know, he called me yesterday in jail but I couldn't do anything. Noah Stilinski called since I was his only relative he had."
"I need him here," I said with a shaky break as I pulled out of the hug. "Do they even have evidence?"
"Well, her body wasn't turned in and it was clear he was the one to bury her since his fingerprints were all over her. They just don't know how she died. Too many injuries to tell."
My mother and I both sat down at the kitchen table and cried.
I know Scott and Stiles would never accuse Derek of murder for fun but I also knew that Derek would never hurt his family without a clear intention and thoughts about the greater good.
"Can we visit him?" I asked after a few minutes.
"We can check but I'm not sure," My mom sighed. "Derek is upset so when we visit him, he might lash out."
"I don't care. I just want to know if he's okay," I said determinedly.
We stopped by Beacon Hills diner for breakfast before going to the station. My mom drove down the quiet streets while I stared out of the window, almost in a trance. I still couldn't believe this was real.
Derek would never hurt anyone on purpose. Not killing but maybe a harmful gouging of the eyes.
We pulled up to the station and my mother walked up to the front desk. I stood behind her, emotionless.
Then my mother pulled me into a room and I sat down in a chair in the corner. It was the sheriff's office. My mother paced the floors and I watched her sadly.
"Heidi, I am so sorry," Sheriff Stilinski walked in the room. They hugged for a brief moment and the sheriff looked at me with sympathy. "He's in a private cell. For obvious reasons."
We were led into another room and Derek was there, behind thick bars. He was sitting down on the metal bed in the cell but when the door closed, he looked at us with wild eyes.
"Aunt Heidi, Elise," He jumped up with a wicked grin. "You have to believe me. I swear I didn't do it. I just buried her."
"I believe you," I said as I approached the cell. "I just don't understand why Scott and Stiles would turn you in."
He growled. "They were the ones trespassing on my property and decided to undo a sacred ritual to find her body. Scott's mad because I told him not to play in the lacrosse game today."
"I thought he was controlling it," I asked, confused.
"Elise you can't let him play. Literally any aggression will trigger the shift and he will tear the other players apart," Derek whispered.
"I could always break his leg," My mom spoke up finally.
I turned around. Shocked.
"Violence is never the answer," I disagreed.
"Eli, you haven't seen what I've seen. Scott will shift regardless of his control or not," My mom stated. "And it would be the end for all supernaturals."
