Quick disclaimer: I said in the previous chapter that this chapter is going to mainly just follow May as she tries to teach Misty and Max how to use their Powers. This might be a shorter chapter than usual, but we'll see.

Littleroot Pokémon Lab Warehouse (Old)"Alright, here should be good," May said, leading Misty and Max to another corner of the dilapidated warehouse. Several pipes, all rusted beyond repair, rose from the ground and traveled up towards the ceiling. "Just be a bit careful about tetanus, though. Actually now thinking about it, that's a very serious concern. I'll have to talk with Brendan about that."
"Hey, sis?" Max asked. "You gonna keep talking to yourself or are you gonna teach us how to use our Powers?"
"Oh, right," May said with a nod. "Um, fair warning. I don't understand all of this myself, either."
"Haven't you been a Patron since before you and I journeyed with Ash?" Max asked. "That's what you told us the other day."
"Yes, but the first time I ever used my Powers was last week," May explained. "So give me a minute to think of something."
"Logically, we should start small. Maybe I should start by trying to get them to summon water to their palms?" She paused, hoping Kyogre would answer. To her frustration, the Great Water Whale was silent. A feeling of unease crept into her, but she shook it off, confused. "Why am I concerned about NOT hearing a Pokémon's voice in my head?" More silence followed.
"Fine, guess I'm on my own here," she muttered silently, though Max still heard her. "Well, we're going to start small," she continued, addressing her two Lieutenants.
"Makes sense," Misty nodded. "What're you gonna teach us?"
"How to summon water to the palm of your hand," May explained. "Like this."
She focused on the palm of her left hand, and she willed water to her hand. She smiled and showed them.
"It might not look like much," she said as they looked on. "Then you learn that you can do this." Suddenly the water turned into a tendril, and rose like an charmed Ekans from her palm. She then spun around and struck the wall with the tendril, leaving a deep, visible, scratch in the metal wall. Max and Misty stared at the wall in amazement.
"I thought you could only summon tendrils from your shoulders," Max exclaimed.
"So did I," May admitted. "But, I did learn something crucial about my Powers. Initially, I was copying Brendan to an extent, because he controls the temperature of his fires with the amount of Energy he outputs."
"So if he put a lot of Energy into an attack, the fires would be more intense and much hotter?" Max asked.
"Yep, I'd been thinking about it since my first night back in Hoenn. I'd stayed at the Pub, and Brendan had used his fires to illuminate my room." She decided not to say she was sharing the room with Brendan in front of Max, not wanting to have to listen to her little brother asking her personal questions. "I never really thought about it until recently. The flames he made are still burning as we speak, but they generate no smoke and no noticable amounts of heat. They just emit a dim light. That's how I came to realize that using small amounts of Energy don't affect us, at the very least not after you have enough experience with your Powers."
"So, why bring this up?" Misty asked.
"Simple. Initially, I was thinking of all Powers as the same concept. But, they aren't. They all require Energy, yes, but what that Energy controls varies on what your Type is. And exactly what happens is also completely different as well."
