Tree of Beginning
"The note's been sent," Brendan said as he rejoined the group. "How'd everything go on your ends?"
"We've spread the word," May said. "But I don't know how many believed us."
"Well, if Bogdan does attack tonight, then they'll change their tune," Red replied. "In any case, the meeting is about to start. Let's get going."
"So, where does this meeting take place?" May asked.
"Yeah, is it inside the Tree?" Ash asked.
"Yep. More specifically, it's held in the Tree's heart." Brendan replied. "Let's go!"
Monday, October 16th, 2:12 p.m. 2018
Tree of Beginning
May, Ash, and Green
Brendan and the others entered the Tree, but May and Ash slowly started hesitating. Green, who walked by them, looked at them.
"Something wrong?" She asked.
"Sorry," Ash said, cautious. "Just the last time we came here, we almost died."
"And I got eaten by the Tree," May said. "Or I guess assimilated would be a better word."
"What in the name of Arceus are either of you talking about?" Green asked.
"The Tree has these defenses," Ash explained, kinda frustrated. "They're orange, shaped like Pokémon, and they kinda float around. They also can't be destroyed."
"Pfft," Green scoffed. "Those things? They're harmless to Patrons. Our Legendaries vouch for us. So the Tree tolerates our presence. It's also why we aren't allowed to eat anything here. We can't leave behind any trash that would harm the ecosystem of the Tree."
"Then why did they go after me when I came here when I was fourteen?" May asked. "And what are they?"
"I'll answer the second question first. We don't know what they are exactly, but we do know what they do here. They keep this ecosystem healthy. So, we just call them Dryagoos. A mix of the words "dryad" and "goo". As for why they attacked you, May.... Maybe it's because you didn't awaken your Powers as a Patron of Kyogre back then. The Tree simply didn't know any better. And as for Ash... Well he probably was unaware about his Aura powers back then. In any case, you should be fine, because you're with Patrons this time." Green extended her hands to both of them with a smile. "C'mon. It's perfectly safe, trust me."
They hesitated at first but then took Green's hand and they continued walking, entering the Tree. As they entered the vast caverns that made up the inside of the Tree, they saw the others walking through a wall, which glowed bright green as they passed through it. Green continued leading them forward and stopped when a "Dryagoo" appeared. Green could feel May and Ash physically tense as it got closer to the trio. Ash's Pikachu, having been calm and silent up to this point began to get nervous..
"Just stay calm," she said calmly and quietly. "May, just activate your Powers. But don't do anything aggressive. Just bow respectfully, and let the Dryagoo recognize you as a Patron."
May did as she was told, invoking the powers of her bracelet. The sapphire glowed, and the water encased within suddenly began crashing like a wave against the shore within. She bowed respectfully to the Dryagoo, and May felt like it was staring at her, despite it lacking any visible eyes. After a nerve-racking moment, the Dryagoo appeared to mimic the bow, and then went about it's business, completely ignoring Ash. After it left, May let out a shaky breath.
"You okay?" Ash asked his former traveling companion.
"Y-yeah," she stuttered, before quickly recomposing herself. "But before it bowed, I heard a voice in my head. A voice that didn't belong to Kyogre. I think it was the Dryagoo. Green, can they-"
"Speak?" Green guessed. "Not in a conventional sense, for they lack mouths. But they can communicate with us telepathically. However, only a few ever really choose to acknowledge us. Most of the time, they'll just bow and leave or not care and continue going about their business. So now that one spoke to you, the others probably won't have much else to say to you."
"What did it say to you, May?" Ash asked.
"It said, "Welcome, Patron. It's been awhile." It's voice was ancient, and completely androgynous, and it had these weird wobbly noises. Kinda like when you shake tin foil around." She took in a breath. "But, that's not important right now. We need to get to the top of the Tree."
"Indeed," Green said, leading them to the wall the others disappeared behind. "Alright, once you go through here, grab a green orb and hold on to it. It'll take you to the heart of the Tree." She walked through the wall, gesturing for May and Ash to follow. "Alright. May, you first. Don't hesitate. Grab a green orb, and hold on. If you need to, activate your Powers if it helps."
May walked forward, but paused as her hand went through the stone wall.
"So, I just wal-" she was interrupted by Green shoving her through the wall.
"Sorry, but we're on a time crunch, May!" Green apologized after she disappeared through the rock wall. "Ash?"
"Yeah I know," Ash said, walking through the wall. "I've done this before, don't worry." Green followed them through, and saw Ash grab one of the green orbs.
"Did May grab one?" Green asked.
"I don't know," Ash said as he ascended the tree. "May! Are you alright!?" He called.
"AAAAAAHHHHHH!" A scream was heard from above them, getting closer.
"Three....," Green closed her eyes, counting as the scream got closer. "Two.... One!" In an instant, Green activated her Item, a small charoite ring on a chain around her neck. The thrust her two hands out, and just before May fell past them, she suddenly stopped, enveloped in a light blue glow. She then gathered plenty of the green orbs, and using her psychic abilities, made a platform for them to stand on.
"Are you alright?" Green asked, keeping her eyes closed.
"Y-yeah," May said, shaking off the terror of her fall. "I was doing fine until Ash shouted for me. It made me jump and I lost my grip on the orb. I wasn't able to grab onto another one, I was panicking so bad."
"It happens, don't worry. Luckily, you can survive any fall if you can activate your Powers, and use them to slow your descent."
"So there's ground down there?" May asked, pointing down through the green orb platform they were ascending on.
"No clue. I've heard rumours that it's a bottomless abyss. But that can't be true, logically talking."
"Then again, neither does calling a giant stone formation a "Tree"."
"Don't disrespect the Tree, please." Green advised. "In any case, it'll take us awhile to reach the top."
"If that's the case, do you just want to talk for a bit, then?" May asked. "I had some questions I've wanted to ask you for awhile now."
"Sure," Green agreed. "What do you want to know."
"Well, what are your Powers, being a Patron of Mew?"
"Well, Mew is a Psychic-Type," Green began. "For Patrons, we use Psychic-Type moves. We can also use telekinesis and the like. I can even levitate, and then take it a step further by flying around for short periods of time. But, I'm like any other Patron. My Powers are directly linked to my emotions, health, and focus."
"That's amazing," May said, awed. "I wish I could have that kind of control over my abilities."
"It'll come with time," Green reassured her. "Don't forget, your still a tyro Patron, so you still have plenty to learn."
"I wish that's all that was wrong with me," May muttered. "I can't even tell when I've hit my limit. I almost died nearly a week ago because I exceeded it. I just feel like I'm a lousy Patron sometimes, especially when I'm around you guys."
"Hey, don't beat yourself up," Green scolded. "You shouldn't compare yourself to any of us like that. You're still learning, your skills will develop in time, and you'll be more cautious about how you use your Powers. Moreover, your Powers will be different from mine, from Steven's, and from Brendan's. One day soon, you'll be just as strong as us, and in some ways, you already are." She sighed, closing her eyes. "I'll let you in on a secret. Red is the only other person I've ever told this to. When I first became a Patron, I was horrible at it. I didn't know what to do. I looked up to people like Sabrina, the Psychic-Type Gym Leader from Saffron City. She was a known psychic. She was also the Patron of Cresselia for a time, before relinquishing her Powers for personal reasons. She has abilities that I could only dream of. So one day, I asked her if she could teach me how to use my Powers."
"Did she?" May asked.
"She refused immediately," Green replied, grinning.
"And you're happy that she did?" May asked, confused.
"Understand, May," Green said. "I said she refused. But she didn't just leave me on that. She told me that there was nothing she could teach me that I didn't already know. She told me she frisked my mind and knew what I was going to ask. But she also saw what my problem was."
"What was it?"
"She said that the reason my Powers were weak was because my mind was in turmoil. I was so worried and upset about my Powers and being weak, that I forgot that I needed to balance everything. I needed to sort out my mind, and then everything would get better. I also needed to talk to Mew. From then on, after I sorted everything out, I never had a problem with my Powers."
"So, how did it feel when you became a Patron?" May asked.
"Everyone has a different experience in that regard May, but if I had to describe how I felt after I became a Patron.... I'd say I was kinda scared at first, but even moreso that that I was kinda just confused about everything. I think plenty of others can relate to that at least. One moment you're an average person, unaware of everything to do with Patrons. The next, it's like a getting swept away in a flood of information. It can feel like you're learning so much so quickly, and that can be a pretty serious blow to reality. And then you learn that you have Powers, and that's a whole other story."
"That's how I felt as well," May agreed. "But when it comes to using my Powers, they just feel kinda unwieldy. I think the best way to describe it is that I feel bogged down by my abilities."
"Plenty of New Patrons have that issue. I'll tell you one way to remedy it. What is your Elemental Type?" Green queried.
"Water," May said.
"How does water move?"
"It moves fluidly," May said, thinking about a river. "Almost like a dance."
"Exactly. Water-Type abilities, like yours, can be rather complicated at first. Many Water-Type Patrons who are just starting out always think that they can just move, and the water will follow. However, this isn't true. This fighting style would work for a Fire-Type Patron, like Brendan, though his use of Fire is more refined. But a Water-Type Patron's abilities will work best when your movements are fluid, like water."
"So are you saying that Water Types can only use their Powers that way?"
"No, but it's the best way for a beginner to use their abilities. Water Patrons aren't the only ones that do this, either."
"You really know a lot about Patrons," May noted, thankful for her friend's help. "Thank you for the compliment, but what I recommended to you was slightly inspired from a certain tv show."
"You mean-"
"Oh, look! We're finally here!" Green said, interrupting May. "Let's go, we might be late! Thankfully, Ash should've gotten here before us!"
To be continued.....
Check out OrigamiLantern11's side story, The Rainbow Wings of the Land and the Silver Wings of the Sea!
Thank you guys for all of the support on this story, and in the next chapter, the meeting will finally begin!
This means that that chapter might also be a bit (or a lot, idk) longer than usual....
Also what do you guys think of the Dryagoos?
I want to reiterate that I only came up with the name, because I don't actually know what they're called.
Basically they were like white blood cells for the Tree of Beginning in the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, which you should check out, if you haven't yet.
And no, that advertisement wasn't intentional.
With that out of the way,
I'll talk to you guys in the next chapter!
