[Years prior to the outbreak]
"The Botany and Horticulture department across the city just recently opened to test the new plant life specimens they have acquired from the group of people our agency have sent on an expedition."
"I heard that isn't true. The group of people did arrive with live specimens, but the Botany department have mistaken the specimens as plant life. The Zoology department is only able to confirm that the specimens are animals just after the Botany department opened."
"If their project of carrying out examinations on the specimens were voided, then what are they up to now?"
"I heard they teamed up with the Horticulture department to grow something called Blue Apples."
"What? Are you serious? We already have the normal apples, then green apples. Aren't humanity satisfied with the normal ones and green ones?"
"That's what I just heard. Oh yeah, haven't I told you about this abandoned subway under the newly built Botany and Horticulture department that stretches to connect the..."
[Four years after the breach]
[??? Pov]
It was a cloudy day that time when I was forced to step out of the bunker shelter I have been stuck with in four years since they have escorted me here along with my several coworkers, all Robotics Engineers. I still remember my days, weeks, months, years in the bunker shelter. We were ten people and with us are hundreds of boxes containing survival meals that have been engineered to last for a decade. But then, two months later one of us died. That's when we were able to confirm that one of us infected and carried the virus with us in the shelter, or that all of us are before we even arrived in the shelter. Another two months have passed and we lost another.
Hundreds of boxes for very few people, it would have been heaven if only we aren't infected. Then eight months have passed, another one gave out. It's like that one game called Russian roulette I have read one time from a History book, but rather than a revolver, we're betting with months. Every two months, one of us dies at random. It came to the point of everyone but myself, dead from the virus. I know I'm next, and on the first month after four years of being contained within the shelter, I opened the bunker doors to be met with the ruins of the Earth.
City infrastructures towering up the sky in the distance. Grounds covered with debris from the aftermath of the outbreak. Dusts accumulating and being carried by the winds. There are no plant life present around, and if there is, it's only the remains of what appears to be a healthy tree, now are bare. The sky is tinted yellow, and little to no clouds hover the skies. The silence of the desolate ruined lands. I ask myself, what did humanity do for Earth to be this broken?
I ventured onward, carrying my bag containing a food ration enough to keep me alive for a week, a bottle of water, and a disc containing what could have been our latest invention. I have a month of my life left, and I better make it of use before I die. I sweat and cough as I trek the barren wastes, occasionally taking a pause to catch my breath and take a sip from my bottle of water. The radiating heat does not help with my condition. I eventually made my stop on an deserted part of the city, with rows of commerical establishments now empty and lifeless.
I reached down into my bag for my bottle of water, only to find out that it's now empty. Dehydration, the first thing that came through my head as I notice the uncanny tall building towering the sky. The location of the tower blocking the rays of the sun, and it's shadow casting upon the rows of abandoned establishments from where I am currently standing. The tower, it's incongruous to the small commerical establishments around me. It is giving me a bad feeling. I would rather not approach the tower just yet, and I need to find a source of water.
Looking around, I noticed a set of stairs leading down the Earth. I reached down into my bag for a source of light before taking down the steps, but to my disappointment. I left the flashlight in the bunker. Good thing I have myself a lighter, the most important tool that came from the survival kit... According to the note inside the survival kit, anyway. I flicked the lighter open as I descend down the dark steps of the Earth. With the flame of my lighter illuminating the path, it didn't take me long to stumble upon an abandoned subway station.
The tiled walls and railings gave it away. A broken down vending machine stood by the wall, it's glass shattered and items stolen. Shattered glass shards lie on the floor around the vending machine. I went deeper into the subway station, only a few feet of a distance being revealed from the darkness with my lighter. I eventually reached a dead end, not even reaching the rails when my source of light got blew out. I panicked, flicking the wheel to ignite my lighter back. It only took me a couple of flicking before it finally lit up again.
I noticed a crack on the wall, and upon closer inspection revealed a large hole, big enough for a man to fit in. I squeezed my way through, eventually reaching the other side before tripping on an object and falling on the cold tiled flooring. The lighter slipped out of my hand and fell on the cold tile somewhere close, generating noise that echoed through the tunnels of the empty subway station. I need water. I reached into my bag as I pant in exhaustion, bringing out my empty bottle of water.
The empty bottle of water slipped out of my hand, crushing the piece of plastic before it falls on the cold tiles nearby, further generating a loud noise that echoed through the tunnels. I only realized now that I have made a mistake that will cost me my own life. I am all alone. I lost my only source of light. I don't have water. Is this how I will die? I barely reached any goals the moment I left the bunker. Soon enough I will die, alone, in the dark, not even having the energy to get up from the cold tiled flooring. I guess this is how I will die.
