As you walk through the streets, your head clouded, your heart aching, tears streaming down your face and filling your eyes, you felt nothing but pain. It's all you ever felt, since the day he died, it was nothing but pain that followed.
It was relentless. Agonising. Lonely.
You hear a gut churning laugh next to you as you drag yourself along. You stop in your tracks are met with that smug face. Karli. "Did you really think you could just walk out?" She asks through her chuckles.
You look at her blankly waiting for her to make her point, you knew her. You knew how she operated, torment was her favourite tool. "And now you've left yourself with no one. Not so clever." She tuts as she shrugs her shoulders, arrogance oozing out of her.
You scoff, rolling your eyes as you wipe your face free of the dampness your tears caused, before folding your arms across your chest, trying to gather any slither of composure you could manage. You sigh, still trying to put on a front.
"Took you long enough to find me. Seems to me that you needed me more than you'll ever admit. Aye Karli?" You smirk as you tilt your head, your confidence and hatred coming back. The pain easing itself to the pit of your stomach, as usual.
She stands in front of you, looking anywhere but your eyeline. She couldn't bring herself to look you in the eye, she never could. "Not quite. I've been biding my time. I saw you met Barnes, it was only a matter of time till you lead me to your weakness." She spoke with such calm tones her words almost slipped past you.
You can't help th look of horror and fear that crosses your face. Sam. He was all you really had left, sure you had Sarah, but Sam was a whole different bond, different time, understanding, he got you. He was you in the male form. He was your weakness alright and it scared you to death that she knew that.
You had to fix this. Quick.
But you couldn't. The very insinuation that he'd be hurt made your blood boil. No, it made you seethe. You drop your arms, taking two steps to her. Face to face, literally.
"You hired me you know what I'm capable of." You practically whisper in her face, the threatening tone in your voice was even a shock for you. "Anything and I mean anything happens to him, you'll finally understand how half the world felt when they were wiped off this earth." You grit out, your jaw clenched. You meant every word, you knew that because you weren't shaking, you were scared of her, you were scared for him.
She smiles, sickly. "Such passion." Sarcasm. "Shame you couldn't apply that to your boyfriend during a war." She taunts.
You felt yourself fall off the edge. All logic and reason didn't count anymore. Threatening Sam put you there, but bringing up Riley was the lowest blow she could have ever made.
You reach down pulling a knife from your boot, holding it to her throat, whilst gripping the back of her neck securing her against it with your free hand, glaring into her lifeless eyes.
"I suggest you shut your damn mouth, you know nothing." You spit out through your once again clenched jaw and gritted teeth. You could feel your blood pulsating through your body, she knew the buttons to press and she did not blink an eye at pushing them.
She laughs in your face, the shock of the cold response makes you push your head backward, furrowing your brows at her. "Double hit."
"You're leaving yourself too exposed Y/N. You're making it too easy for me." She torments once again.
You move your knife away, releasing your grip on her neck you push her away from you. "Go to hell you piece of shit." You were allowing your emotions to get the better of you, but you couldn't care less. "I'll find those viles. I'll get rid of that serum and then you better hide." Once again, meaning every word as you point your knife at her as you speak.
You turn your back to her and head in the opposite direction, refusing to give her the time and satisfaction of getting any further rises out of you, she took enough. But she won, you were now plagued with memories, guilt, fear... pain. It come back, with vengeance.
-Flashback-
Sam is being shot at, using his wings as protection, before opening it back up, launching himself in the air high enough, to quite literally give him a roundhouse kick to the chest, causing them to be thrown into a small building behind them. Knocking them unconscious and slumped into a heap against the wall, Sam quickly leans over them, feeling their pockets, their jacket, checking their bag.
He sighs, defeatedly. As he straightens up, he searches around for any of the soldiers comrades, someone running, anything. "Dammit, nothing here. Y/N?" He asks through the comms you were all wearing.
You were chasing another of the comrades who tried to escape past you after Sam focused on the other, he was throwing things from the stalls behind him to try and trip you up, even trying to outrun you with parkour style tricks. Little did he know, that was a secret skill of yours.
"Little busy over here sammy." You say breathlessly, as you lunge yourself over wooden boxes, feet first, before resuming the chase. "Riley, what about you?" You ask still breathless as you commando roll over the back of reversing motorbike, taking out the soldier as you took him out by his legs, before jumping back up.
Hearing the familiar buzz of redwing, you turn to see it hovering over you, you smile shaking your head.
"Sorry what did you say? I was distracted by your fine ass." Riley replies, as he chuckles mischievously. His voice was deep, hoarse, but his chuckles and laughs were childlike, to hear him speak you'd picture a 6 foot body builder covered in tattoos, hearing him laugh, you'd picture a timid computer nerd, who wore broken glasses and blushed at the thought of a woman.
In reality, he was a mix of the two.
"You two can get a room once we've rescued this guy." Sam counters through the comms.
Why couldn't life be that simple anymore?
Was it ever really that simple?
