Summary: You and your grandma just moved to Reseda. Being the new kid is not easy, but you meet a certain someone who makes it a little better.

Warnings: Slight Swearing, fluff

This was it. A 'fresh start', as my grandma would say. I would hardly call it that. To put it simply, we were running away. My parents passed away a few months ago and my grandma couldn't take the constant reminder that they were gone, so we left. I couldn't really handle it either, but I wouldn't tell her that. I had to be strong for her. For my parents.

It was Saturday and I started my new school on Monday. There wasn't much to do seeing as everything was unpacked and placed where it was supposed to be. I was just going to sit around and read and eat junk food until Monday, but my grandma had other plans.

"Why don't you go exploring Y/N/N? It's a new place. You might find something you'll like", she said with the utmost optimism. I hardly wanted to go outside. Not only was it hot as hell, but I didn't really know where to go. I knew that I'd get lost. It was who I was. I got lost everywhere I went.

"But grandma", I started defensively, unmoving from the couch. Deep down I knew that she would make me go, but a girl could try. "I don't know where anything is. What if I get lost?"

My grandma peeked her head around the kitchen wall to look at me. I was sprawled out on the couch, my hair hanging off the side like a curtain. "That's the point of exploring", she began to explain. "You could learn your way around. If you get lost, just call me."

I internally groaned. There was no point in arguing back. She would win. She always did. I did have to cut her some slack. After my parents died, everything happened so fast. She didn't really have time to think or to grieve. Without replying I got off the couch and made my way towards the door, phone in hand. I guess it wouldn't hurt to go out.

"Bye grandma, I love you!", I exclaimed, hoping she would hear me. Before I could walk out the door she came rushing over, a twenty dollar bill in her hand.

"Here", she said while placing it in my hand. "Go grab yourself some lunch", she finished with a smile. I smiled back, grateful for the gesture. She truly was the most caring woman. That must've been where my mom got it from.

"Okay", I started, "thanks grandma", I leaned forward and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She smiled back and patted my cheeks, looking into my eyes. I could tell she was trying not to cry. It was hard for us.

"I love you", she replied after a moment. "I love you too", I replied back. And then I left.

As I walked around Reseda all I could think about was how hot and sketchy it was. I wasn't used to big cities like this. The air was hot and humid, and the slight breeze seemed to make it worse.

I continued walking for what seemed like hours, but was really only twenty minutes when I saw a convenience store inside a strip mall. Immediately my stomach growled. This will do, I thought to myself. I could just grab a snack and call it a day.

I went inside and got myself a bag of chips and a sweet tea. After paying I walked outside ready to eat on the sidewalk when I noticed a bunch of kids my age. They made their way towards the other end of the strip mall and walked in. Curiosity got the best of me as I made my way over.

The sign said 'Cobra Kai'. Badass name, I thought. I peeked through the window to see what it was and noticed the same kids wearing what looked like fancy pajamas standing around. It wasn't until they started to punch and kick the air that I realized. They were doing karate. I soon found myself watching from outside, like a creep, until I felt someone run into me.

"Sorry, sorry", someone said frantically. I turned around only to be met with the most attractive boy I'd ever seen. Immediately I felt self-conscious, hoping that my breath didn't smell like Doritos. It wasn't until he waved his hand in front of my face that I realized I had been standing there staring at him.

I shook my head. "It's totally fine", I replied, "I shouldn't just be standing on the sidewalk." I looked down feeling embarrassed all of a sudden. Whether it was from staring at him or having Dorito dust on my shirt, or both, I don't know. Thinking he was going to just walk away, he smiled and bent down, picking up my chips and sweet tea. I hadn't even realized I had dropped them. He handed them to me, which I took hesitantly. I wasn't even hungry anymore.

"You interested?", he asked all of a sudden. My eyes snapped up to meet his. Damn, I thought, Are all boys in Reseda this straightforward? He looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to respond.

"Excuse me?", I asked both confused and shocked. He became confused, not understanding my tone of voice. Realization hit him as he let out a laugh. I noticed as his eyes crinkled at the sides, his nose scrunched up. He was genuinely laughing. I was genuinely confused. I stood there with the same confused expression on my face.

"I meant karate", he said after he calmed down. I tilted my head to the side. This boy was confusing me. "I was asking if you were interested in karate", he continued, noticing my unchanged expression.

My mouth hung open as my eyes widened as a wave of realization and embarrassment hit me. He was talking about the karate school. I then realized he was wearing his own set of fancy pajamas. Why are you so stupid?, I thought. It's my first day here and I already made a complete fool of myself in front of an attractive boy.

He must have thought my reaction was funny because he began to laugh again. At this point I couldn't hold it in either. His laugh was so contagious.

After a moment, I replied, "No, just looking around, though it makes sense why you're wearing fancy pajamas" I looked into his eyes, my hands clutching my chips and tea in my hand, my knuckles turning white. Anything to get my mind off of how gorgeous this boy is.

"It's a gi", he said. I blushed in embarrassment, "You new here?", he asked. I looked at him, my head tilted in an 'is it that obvious?' sort of way. He nodded and smiled. Did this boy ever stop smiling?

"I'm Miguel", he said. At least I could put a name to his face. "Y/N", I replied with a soft smile.

All of a sudden he became nervous, scratching the back of his neck. "So," he started, "If you need someone to show you around, I would love to"

I smiled a big smile, "I'd like that", I replied. He began to blush. Did I make him nervous?

"Give me your phone", I said with a newfound confidence. Without hesitating he reached in his back pocket and pulled out his phone, unlocking it. I put in my number and texted myself so I had his. I gave it back to him.

"There", I started, "just let me know when you want to get together." He nodded eagerly and smiled.

"Yeah, yeah", he said, "Of course." We continued to stare at each other. There was something so comforting about his big brown eyes. He stared at me too. Was he feeling the same way I was?

The moment was ruined when someone shouted, "Diaz! You're 15 minutes late." We both snapped our heads over to see a tall middle-aged blonde dude standing in the door. He must be his teacher, I thought.

"Sensei!", Miguel said, sounding embarrassed. "I was just-", he continued, but was cut off by his "sensei". "Quiet!", his sensei said.

"Come on", he ushered Miguel with his head. Miguel sighed, but nodded and made his way towards the door, his sensei already inside.

As he was about to walk in he turned to look at me. "You free tomorrow?", he asked. "Yes", I replied back almost too eagerly. He nodded and continued looking at me. Was he going to ask me something else? Just as he opened his mouth to say something, we heard, "DIAZ!" Miguel's eyes widened and he said, "I'll text you later, Y/N!", and made his way inside. I chuckled at his expression, but then began to feel butterflies in my stomach. This boy was beyond cute and he wanted to hangout with me.

I made my way back home getting lost, but smiling nonetheless. I just knew this was going to be the start of something amazing. Maybe Reseda wouldn't be so bad.
