Loreth awoke to the sound of dwarves stirring and making their morning meals. She was content just watching them with her head resting on her arms in the shallow water albeit a sad heart. The mermaid didn't want to see them go. Although there was the promise from Gandalf that a Lord Elrond would come to take her from this place. That did surprisingly little to sway her heart. She simply couldn't put her finger on it. There was that deep feeling of instinct again that said she had to go with them.

"Don't look so sad, lass," Dwalin pipped up causing her to look at him with glossy doe eyes, "A face so beautiful should not look so upset."

His compliment warmed her heart. He no longer seemed to harbor such sour feelings towards her. She looked down, "I just wish I could come with you—help you on...whatever it is that you're doing."

Gandalf walked up to the lake now, "rest assured, Lord Elrond will come for you. However I should imagine you won't see him for another two full moons."

Loreth sighed, "That's what I was worried about. I am more than thankful for your kindness, Gandalf. I'll never forget this—meeting each and everyone one of you has been it's own reward." Her eyes trailed over to Thorin who was already watching her. This made her heart skip a beat and she looked away quickly. She prayed that she didn't look as bothered by his gaze as she felt on the inside.

The men said their goodbyes after packing up their equipment. They left just as dawn had approached and the morning was cool, putting dew on the grass.

Loreth sat up and watched them leave with a heavy heart and a considerable lump in her throat. She had only known them for a small time but they were all so kind to her. Now she was further confined to this pool until Elrond came to collect her. She would very much like to see those dwarves again.

She was watching them walk away when a sound behind her caught her attention with. With a small gasp she turned around. A twig had snapped. She squinted at the bush trying to see what beast caused the disturbance. In a rush, an orc had jumped from the brush. It growled and howled holding its sword threateningly in the air.

She screamed in fright and dived into the water quickly. Once a safe distance away, she watch the small orc pack charge from their hiding place. Right to where the dwarves were walking away. She saw them as her friends and didn't want any harm to come to them. The group had walk to the other side of the lake. If she was fast enough she could swim to them in time to warn them.

At a lightning speed, she swam the fastest she'd ever swam. Upon seeing her, the dwarves held smiles until they saw her paled face.

"Orcs! They're hunting you!" Loreth shouted at them. She pointed and they followed her gaze. They saw the approaching orc pack and met them head on with war cries of their own.

Loreth watched on helplessly from the water. She wished she could've been up there, fighting with them.

They met in a clash of angry roars. It was hard to tell which side it was coming from.

Their weapons glanced together along with the occasional wail from a dying beast. But then the mermaid watched as a new found fear took over her senses. Thorin had been tackled by a rather large orc. All the other dwarves had their hands full; unable to help their leader. She looked around trying to find something to help. A rock—anything! That's when a plan hatched in her brain.

It was a dumb idea. A stupid idea even.

If there was anything worth dying for, it was this. Whatever this group's destiny, was, it was greater than her own and she was happy to make that sacrifice. To give her full life some sort of purpose.
