Loreth awoke with a sad feeling in her heart. She didn't even join the dwarves for breakfast. She stayed at the bottom of her pool, where it was safe and she could escape the world for a while.

She didn't realize how bad she wanted Thorin to be hers. To have someone to go through life with, someone to love and give love to her. She wanted it more than anything. She closed her eyes and tried not to cry. The last thing she wanted was to be responsible for killing a king and a good man. But her heart was so divided at the same time. A part of her truly felt he was the one. Why else would the water reveal him to her?

Feet splashing in the water above her pulled her from her thoughts. Some dwarf was dipping their feet in the water.

Loreth's brows knit together in annoyance. She just wanted to be alone at the moment. She swam to the surface, ready to scold whichever dwarf it was but stopped in her tracks and went a little pale. It was Thorin himself.

"Oh, Thorin." She hesitantly swam a little closer, "forgive me, I was ready to scold you for disturbing my peace." She rested a hand on the ground beside him.

"I just wanted to check on you. I didn't see you with the others at breakfast." His worried tone was enough to melt away any anger she once had.

She looked down and sighed, "yes, I'm afraid I'm not myself this morning."

"Is something the matter?" His hand was dangerously close to hers and he wanted to take it in his own but held back, thinking it too soon.

She said nothing but pulled herself from the water and sat beside him, water cascading down her like the waterfall. She swished her tail in the water nervously.

"It's hard to explain." She still hadn't met his eyes and it was tearing Thorin up on the inside more than he'd admit. Had he done something wrong?

He let his thoughts get the better of him and he rest a warm hand over her own. I'm the morning sun her beauty was divine, and it was from there that he found his courage.

"Please, tell me." He whispered lowly.

She looked him in the eyes then. She'd never heard him sound like that before—so vulnerable and a little desperate. It caused her heart to get that cursed fuzzy feeling again. Searching his blue orbs, she felt her resolve waning.

"Thorin, I...I spoke with Lord Elrond to try and get some answers and more than a few things have become clear to me. He said that the water was a mermaid's truth, and something that we could bend to our will but..."

Thorin still looked at her, interested in the conversation, "but?"

"Well...he said that the water could talk, if we only had the ears to listen. He said that elves could do the same thing but for my people, it was much easier to get a response from water. Lord Elrond claims that the water can be provoked to 'speak' when a mermaid sings and reveal truths as a result." She sighs in frustration. "Forgive me, I don't quite know how to word it, Thorin. It's still new to me."

He chuckles, "you don't have to tell me, it can wait for another time."

"No," she said firmly, "I at least need you to know this."

Thorin gives her a nod, "alright. I'm listening." He reached up and put a strand of wet hair behind her ear. The tender gesture nearly made her lip quiver. Why was this so hard to do?

His patience and adoring look in his eyes is enough to melt her heart and give her all the encouragement she needed. It was always the eyes. It was always his eyes that bested her.
