"Sir Pres., do you trust me?" Leni spoke over the phone.
Nabatid ni Leni ang malalim na pagbuntong-hininga ni Digong sa kabilang linya, "Vice, you're calling me so early in the morning just to ask me that?"
"I'm sorry Sir, ano lang kasi...I'm on a plane right now," the VP professed.
"Ha? Saan man ang punta mo?" tanong nito.
Leni bit her lower lip, "I'm having a direct flight to Los Angeles. I believe I sent you a memo last four days ago ho."
"Ah...ngayon ba 'yun? Then what is this call about?" she heard him yawn right after uttering those words.
"I was told na you'll be flying din this week to L.A for a forum, gusto ko lang sanang i-suggest na ako na lang ang dumalo bilang andito na din po ako Pres.," pagpapaalam nito.
Biglang natigilan ang Presidente sa kabilang linya, "I'm...I don't want to hurt your feelings but I don't wanna lie too. I'm having second thoughts, Leni."
She had been bracing herself for a response of that sort. It stands to reason that two persons who have distinct goals in life and different expectations from their time in public office couldn't possibly share the same intelligence. However, she was prepared with an answer to that assertion when it was presented to her.
Without stuttering and nervousness drawing in her tone, she confidently jested, "Just give me your agendas and main points, and let me relay it to them as exact as I can do so. We can't be both absent in our countries, Sir. Nauna po akong mag-file ng leave kaysa sa inyo at bilang ako na rin ho ang nandito, with all due respect, let's utilize our time to the fullest extent."
"Are you sure you can do it? Walang atrasan? Walang i-paparaphrase sa mga sasabihin ko?" Digong bombarded her with questions, making sure of everything. "It's not that I doubt you, Vice. You know how different our stands are between US relations. Kaya pagpasensyahan mo na ako."
Napabuntong-hininga si Leni ngunit hindi niya ito inayawan, "Yes, President. I'll be your mirror and represent you for a few days."
"Okay Ma'am. I give you my permission. Ipapasend ko kay Roque sa'yo yung mga kailangang sabihin. I'll expect to see you again with your report pagbalik mo kaagad ng Manila," the President replied with authority in his voice.
She sighed in relief, "Noted Sir, salamat po. Matulog na po kayo ulit, pasensya na po sa late notice."
"Ako nga dapat siguro ang magpasalamat sa'yo. Ayoko man sumakay masyado sa mga eroplanong iyan ng napakahaba ba ang biyahe...sinalba mo ang aking mga rayuma," he side-joked.
It made the VP crack up for a bit and replied, "Nako Pres., wag po tayong ganyan. Nahahalata na yung mga edad natin niyan."
She heard Digong's heartily, deep laugh over the line, "Safe travels, Leni. Tulog na ako tapos tulog ka na din dyan. Mahaba-haba pa naman yang biyahe mo."
