How Hungover He Was

"Okay I may be wrong because everything from last night... is a blur, but did you come over last night?" Nick asked me as we sat beside each other on the park bench, watching Ren play by herself.

"Yeah" I said softly. I looked up at Nick, who wore the same thing he was wearing last night. He wore dark sunglasses over his eyes and his hair was even more messed up than it was yesterday.

Even Nick's voice proved that he was very much hungover. He sounded like he had taken parts of his throat, put them into a blender, and reattached them back inside himself. He bird chirped overhead, making him flinch. "You fixed me coffee? What kinds of things did I say?"

"Yes and not much really." Lies.

"Really? Well, the part I'm most confused about," Here it comes, "did I... did I maybe... kiss you?" I looked away, avoiding the slight smile on his face. "You're blushing. So I did didn't I?" I paused a moment before nodding slightly. I didn't have to look over to see his smile. Why was he smiling? Did he even understand the position he has put me in? "What happened after that? We didn't...?"

"Oh, God, no!" I said quickly, growing even redder than before. "I—I cut you off and left. Last I saw, you fell backwards onto the bed and made amends with your pillow before quickly falling asleep. That was it."

Nick laughed. There was a long pause. Ren was climbing to the top of the equipment, where the big slide was. "What now?"

I stood suddenly, causing him to flinch again. "What now? We're going to pretend it never happened. Do you know what this could mean for Sam and I if he found out... if anyone found out."

Nick looked confused, "You're going to stand there and tell me the kiss meant absolutely nothing to you?"

"What kiss?" I said crossing my arms.

Pain came over his face, "Brin..." The sound of tires on gravel came then from the parking lot. "Speak of the devil. Bye, Brin. You'll bring Ren over tomorrow then?" Nick stood, anxious to leave before Sam came down.

I nodded, "Fine." And with that, he was gone.

Sam looked confused and concerned as he watched Nick get into his car and drive away. Sam took Nick's place beside me while Ren and Sam started to play. "Was he hungover?" Sam asked me after a moment of silence. I nodded slowly. "What was that about then?"

Keep your mouth shut about the kiss. It didn't matter; it never happened. "He's getting Ren tomorrow morning."

Sam looked confused all over again. "Brin, are you sure that's such a good idea right now?"

"Sam, I been through hell and back with Ren these past two weeks. I overreacted anyways. Plus, it's not your kid, okay?"

Sam took the annoyed hint in my tone and silently agreed.
