Since I left Nigeria, the only people I missed dearly were my sister and Ryl.
It wasn't so easy to be in a country that wasn't yours, I tried to fit in but they teased me and made fun of me, studying was difficult for me because it wasn't the same syllabus, they were more advanced than me.
I informed my father of my problems and he sent my sister over just after her SS3 examinations but nonetheless I was still lonely and it was then I discovered that the actual person I missed was Ryl.
I couldn't reach out to her because it took me a while to get my Canadian number and when I finally got it, I had lost Ryl's number, I was so sad for a long time until my mind began to take a different turn, I imagined that she had gotten a boyfriend, that she no longer thought of me, that she had moved on so I decided to do the same.
All the boys in my class had girlfriends and they laughed at me for not having one, they said it was as a result of how ugly I was and that was when I met Kelly, she was a poor and not so beautiful girl and nobody liked her so I knew that she wouldn't reject me if I asked and I did.
She agreed and we became friends, she was so interesting and playful and taught me a lot of things I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for her.
I finally studied engineering because she opened my eyes to what I really liked.
After my college education, I got a job there in Canada, Kelly was still my girlfriend and my best friend, still ready to help me in any area of difficulty but a part of me was still lonely so I told Kelly, she had come to understand me and she was very caring too.
I told her that I had a girlfriend back in Nigeria and I couldn't get my mind off her.
Kelly was sad but she agreed, she told me to go and look for my girlfriend before she gets so attached to me that her heart would break.
I was scared that Ryl probably had a new life, maybe a husband and kids or maybe she had a boyfriend or fiancé but I decided to try, it was better than not doing anything at all.
***
When I got to Nigeria, the first place I went to was her mother's house, her mother no longer stayed there.
I begged the present occupants of the house and they were able to give me her mother's number and I reached out to her mother.
She told me that she no longer worked with the emergency agency and she now lived with her husband since her children were all away from home, she gave me their address and I visited their house, they welcomed me well when I introduced myself and when I asked about Ryl, they looked excited, they told me that she was going to have her first case very soon and I could see her there.
Fear found it's way into me as I wondered what her reaction would be if she saw me.
***
I went to Enugu with her parents to the court where the case was taking place, I was shocked that she was defending our former classmate and her rival back then, Ukandu Kosisochukwu and I reasoned that if she could forgive Kosi, she would forgive me too. When I set my eyes on Ryl and saw the kind of woman she had become, my heart soared and I discovered yet again how much I love her and then she began to speak, she spoke with strength and emotion and people around me were praying for her success.
I prayed for her success too and that she wouldn't be engaged or married even.
Then she won, I was so glad and I clapped loudly but her eyes didn't wander to me even once, she was looking at the people who had been by her all the years and I wished that she would accept me too.
***
I followed her outside where she was waiting for someone and I pretended to be seeing her for the first time."Is this you, Ryl?" I asked her.
She stared at me and I couldn't understand her emotions, but I could tell that she wasn't angry and then she called my name.
"Anderson?" Like a question.
I was touched and the tears I had hidden all these years came to my eyes and I embraced her apologizing for leaving her for so long.
She obliged me and hugged me back then I told her something I had been wishing to tell her but was too young to confirm it.
"I love you, Ryl"
She replied without hesitation. "I love you too".
I was filled with so much joy that I kissed her cheek.
"And I knew that you would make it" I told her.
That's the final ending.
Goodbye to all the characters.
So Anderson and Ryl got back together and Ryl achieved her dream.
