Anderson cleaned my tears as they rolled down.
"Ryl, you don't have to cry about this. Kosi is not worth it, no matter what is so difficult that will make you not to get it, help will come your way, I believe it"
I cried harder until he pulled me to a hug.
We were in his class, it wasn't time for first period yet and he was already in school, he told me that he came on his own, he did not wait for his father.
"Lovebirds, abeg everyone is watching" Asah whispered.
I know she was concerned about me but also she was worried about gossips.
Anderson made me sit on his seat and then he sat on the desk as I sniffed and cleaned my eyes.
"Ryl, it's okay" Asah sighed.
"This thing is getting out of hand, Kosi needs to be taught a lesson or two so that she will learn how to control her big mouth" Anderson said angrily.
"Like seriously" Asah agreed.
I said nothing wallowing in self pity.
Anderson bought cookies for me and Asah.
"I can't be on the receiving side always" I told him in rejection.
"You are not on the receiving side, I'm just appreciating that you are my friend, nobody has been my friend for this long without asking for things, but you don't ask, I'm the one giving it to you"
"Thank you but I don't want it" I replied.
Anderson glared at me then Asah took it from him. "I'll make her take it"
"You won't make me take it" I hissed.
"I'm your friend for God's sake!" He shouted angrily.
"And friends share things together, you are not going to keep on buying things for me as if I'm helpless"
"Good Lord, you are not helpless"
I was about to talk when Asah shouted.
"That's enough both of you, stop it! Ryl, you are being unfeeling, you don't want to be his girlfriend but at least accept this bit, no, what the hell is wrong with you? Anderson, if she doesn't want the gifts, don't bother bringing them again, people don't know what they have until they lose it!"
I glared at Asah, she returned the glare before leaving the class dropping the cookies on Anderson's lap.
I stood up to leave too.
"Ryl please, consider my offer, just say yes, it doesn't even mean much"
"If it doesn't mean much, why do you want me to be your girlfriend?"
He bit his lip. "It makes me feel secure, I would not have the feeling that you are someone else's girlfriend"
I gulped then turned and darted for the door, the next time he asks, I promise I will give him an answer but not just now.
Classes started in earnest, the last period was the English period and Amara was in my class immediately it was over.
"Kennedy is here to see you"
"What?"
"Kennedy wants to see you" she repeated although she knew I heard her.
"How do you feel?" She asked as she led me out of my class.
"Better" I replied.
"That's good"
Kennedy came in dad's car and he parked it beside Mr. Uche's office.
His face lit up when he saw me. "Nneoma, how are you?"
"I'm fine"
"Amara told me that you are sick, how do you feel now?"
"Better than before"
"Do you want to go home?" He was peering at me closely.
I shook my head.
He sighed. "I brought food for you and some money, eat well o"
"Ken, do you think I should be a lawyer?" I asked him.
"Yes, why?"
"Because, I'm just scared"
Kennedy stared at me and then at Amara."See, Nneoma, we are your elder siblings, believe me, whether you have job or you don't have job, you will not suffer, all of us are working jointly to make our lives comfortable so don't relent, keep up with what you are doing, what matters is that you do it well, you will support yourself with that, the only hope people have is in their skills, what you can do, are you hearing me?"
I nodded ignoring the pain in me.
"See your food" he handed me a nylon filled with goodies and a flask of food.
"Do you need money?"
I shook my head.
"Amara, I'm sure you need" he handed her some money which she collected with a quiet 'thank you'.
"I'm going, stay well" he told us as he turned to the car.
I held the nylon tighter as I waved at him, Amara held my hands watching as the car drove off.
"I'm here okay?"
I nodded as tightened my grip around her, we walked back to our classes for extra lessons.
When lessons were over and as usual, I and Asah escorted Anderson to the gate, he told me quietly.
"I'm bringing something for you tomorrow and I'm not taking no for an answer".
I lowered my eyes without a word.
"Okay, I'll take your silence as an answer"
I still remained silent."Okay good bye" he said awkwardly.
"Bye" I raised my face as he jogged out through the gate.
As we walked to the dormitory, I had something planned in my mind but I didn't want to share it with Asah and as soon as I entered the apartment, I pulled Kosi's bed pulling off the bedspread.
She was shocked and she stared at me puzzled.
"I'm not a fool! You are not better than me, Kosi, you can't keep tormenting me, mark it this day... I know very well that you are super intelligent but your pride would bring you down, Kosi, you will not make it in life!".
They gasped, nobody had seen me ranting before let alone laying a curse on someone, even Asah had her hands over her mouth as I tossed the bedspread to the side and her pillow fell into her bucket of water.
I was angry, I wasn't in my right senses, part of me wanted to believe that I was right and the other part mocked me for overreacting.
But Kosi was dumbfounded, she couldn't even retaliate, she simply picked her pillow and hung it outside.
I wasn't going to change for anybody, I've already started it and I must finish it.
