i didn't end up spending the night at luke's. mum wouldn't let me. we got into a big fight over it.
"but mum!" i said, "i'm not going to see him for months! i want to see him one last time!" mum sighed, "you'll see him tomorrow, tiahn!" i felt like crying. why didn't she see how much this meant to me? "i want to say goodbye to him alone. our last night together means so much to him- to both of us! don't you see that?"
"it's not the end of the world!" mum yelled, "you'll see him soon enough!" i felt the anger course through me- red hot. "he won't be back for 6 months!" i cried. mum through the tea towel she was holding down on the bench. "that's enough, tiahn! you aren't going, and that's final. we never get to see you anymore!" she said, her voice lowering. her calmness just angered me even more. "you've had me for 16 years!" i yelled, "all luke is asking for is one night! can't you just give him that?" mum sighed, turning her back on me. "go to your room." she whispered.
i ran up the stairs, tears streaming down my face. i slammed the door to my room and grabbed my phone, dialling luke's number. he picked up on the second ring.
"hey gorgeous girl" luke said.
i couldn't form words. all i could do was cry.
"baby, are you all right?" luke asked, worry creeping into his voice. i brushed away my tears with the palm of my hand and tried to speak. "mum won't let me spend the night," i whispered. i sounded so stupid. i heard luke sigh into the phone. "that's alright baby, don't cry, it's okay," he said. i sniffled a bit before speaking, "i really wanted to see you." "i know you did," luke said, "i wanted to see you too. but, your mum's decision is final. we can't do anything about it."
"i'm sorry," i whispered. "don't be, it isn't your fault." luke said softly. "no more tears, okay?" i wiped them away, smiling a little. "no more tears," i responded. "good," luke said. "i have an idea, how about i pick you up, at say, 7 tomorrow, and we go watch the sunrise? at my writing spot? would you like that?" i nodded into the phone, laughing at myself when i realised that he couldn't hear me. "see you at 7," i said, before hanging up.
***
luke picked me up at 7 the next morning. mum let me go. she apologised for going crazy at me, and i think she felt bad about it, because she went out and bought us all sorts of things for our picnic. i answered the door when luke knocked armed with packets croissants and bottles of orange juice. luke smiled at the picnic basket, then led me to the car.
the drive there was amazing, everything is so different in the morning. when we reached luke's writing spot, i got out of the car and breathed in the fresh air. it was a bit cold, apparently it was going to rain later, and i was grateful for luke's jumper.
we sat in silence, eating our food, and watching the sunrise. it was beautiful. with luke beside me, i couldn't think of anywhere else i wanted to be.
