amara haven

I was sitting in the airport waiting area while Nic was grabbing us coffee.

I listened to the rings of the phone, hoping that David would pick up.

"Hello," he said, "Are you alright? Have you heard from Nic?"

"Yeah, yes, we're waiting for our flight to board," I replied, "I forgot to call you earlier-"

"That's fine, Amara. Have you guys eaten, slept? Is he okay? Are you?" He asked.

I pinched the space between my eyebrows, "I think so. I mean, we stayed up all night but we'll probably sleep on the plane. And we ate a bit earlier and we're probably gonna eat on the plane too."

"How much were the tickets?"

"Oh, uhm- around $300, why?"

"I'll write you a check when you get here," he offered.

"Oh, you don't have to-"

"Nope, writing it now," he said.

I laughed, then saw Nic walking back to our seats, "Well, I'm gonna go, we'll see you in a few hours."

"Course. And Amara, thank you. So much," he said.

"Anytime," I muttered, "Okay, bye, David."

"See ya," he replied.

I hung up as Nic sat down and handed me the drink.

"A chai latte with light ice and a shot of espresso for Ms Haven," he announced.

I rolled my eyes, "You think this makes up for what you did?"

"Ah, come on, Mara," he pretended to be offended.

I took the coffee, "Thank you."

"And she approves!"

I bit my tongue as I took a sip.

He laughed, "Who was that?"

"Who was what?" I asked.

"On the phone," he clarified.

"David," I replied.

He turned to look out of the large window, drinking his coffee.

"Come on, Nic, he hasn't done anything wrong," I said.

"I know," he stated.

I had so much curiosity about that boy.

I'd known him for years, but I still didn't quite understand his bitterness towards his parents.

Maybe it was because they split up when he was young and he was still upset.

"Mara," he waved a hand in front of my face.

"What?" I snapped away from my thoughts.

"Good to see you still zone out when I'm talking," he gave me a teasing look.

"You're just that boring, I guess," I countered.

"Ouch," he hissed.

"Anyways, what I asked was if you're still the quiet nerd I remember," he teased.

"Not much has changed," I reached over and mussed his hair.

I was watching a few of the people in the airport when I noticed Kate and Walker with Aaron and Mei Linn.

I hesitated a second before turning to Nic, "I'll be right back."

He nodded.

I jumped up and headed in their direction.
