I heard them. Every time I heard them banging on my door. I had cried myself to exhaustion. Guilt overrode my senses. I should have stay with Grandma. Instead, I had let her talk me into taking the exam. My room lay in shambles. I had ransacked it two days ago in a rage. I sat in a pile of dirty clothes. My hair greasy from having not washed.

Nik had returned one day and stood outside my door for a while. I glared at door. My eyes burrowing a hole through the door to the girl I had loved most of my life. I looked at my surroundings. I was being weak. I couldn't be there for her in the state I sat in. Shadows clouded my vision as fury at myself for failing closed in. I had to be stronger. Better. I stood up and began cleaning. The shadows never leaving my vision.
