Today is the day Chris has gone back to work. It's been considerably stranger being here without him. I'm still getting used to living here in Boston, and I know that Chris said this is my home too, but I'm still getting used to that as well. Part of me still feels like a guest. I guess it just takes time. It's weird, not having my mum around. I talk to her nearly everyday, and today is no different. As I'm making myself some lunch, I decide to give her a call. Within a few rings, she answers.
"Hey, honey."
"Hi, mum. You b-busy?"
"No, Mark is just making tea while I'm catching up with my Home and Away."
"Ah, I m-miss catching a few episodes every once in a b-blue moon." She laughs.
"What are you and Chris up to?"
"Oh, he's b-back at work today."
"Ahhh, yes, of course. I remember you mentioning he was back this week. So first day home alone?"
"Yup. I mean, I have Dodger w-with me, so I have some company."
"Yeah, that's definitely better than being completely alone. How you coping?"
"Uhhh, it's kinda w-weird. I st-still feel like a guest even though I know I'm n-not."
"Well, that's understandable. It's still all new. You'll soon get used to it though and love the peace and quiet." She jokes, making me laugh softly.
"Yeah, I sssuppose so."
"You have plenty to do though, right?"
"Oh, yeah, d-definitely. I've got my PlayStation. Th-There's Netflix and that kind of stuff. Can walk Dodger. I'm j-just making lunch at the moment."
"What are you making?"
"Ham salad roll." I say with a small smile.
"That's not making lunch! Use this alone time wisely to learn some cooking tips." She teases and I laugh softly.
"I will, I will." She laughs too.
"I'm only playing with you. Mostly. What time will Chris be home tonight?"
"About six. Not t-too bad really. The fffilming locations are r-really close to home."
"Ah, that's nice then. Least it's not that late."
"Definitely, can't complain." I joke and she laughs. I end up on the call for a little while before we wrap it up and I eat my lunch.
Just before it hits 6pm, I hear the front door unlock from the living room, as I'm sat catching up with some Netflix shows. Dodger immediately darts out of the room and I smile slightly, my heart skipping a beat.
"Ah, hello bubba! Heeeey." I quickly hop off the sofa and walk into the entrance hall, finding Chris barely through the door, fussing Dodger. He suddenly looks up at me and grins, straightening up. My heart skips a beat again. "Hey, you." He says, strolling over to me.
"Hi. How was work?"
"Yeah, it was pretty fun." He answers, wrapping his arms around me. "Feels good to be back. But I missed you." At this, I smile, biting my lip.
"I missed you too."
"Mmm, you did?" He asks with a smile.
"Of course. It's b-been weird without you here. Don't know w-what to do with myself." He arches that eyebrow playfully. I laugh and roll my eyes, making him laugh. Slowly, he leans in and gives me a gentle kiss.
"You can do whatever you like. It's your home too, remember?" With another smile, I nod. "Come on. We'll watch a movie and order takeout."
"Oooh, that sounds good." He grins and pecks my temple.
