Ring...Ring...Ring... the phone buzzed loudly overpowering the soft volume coming from the TV. Caitlyn sighed as she got up from her place on the couch. It was Friday night and she was trying to get some rest after working all day. "Hello?" she said as she picked up the phone. She waited a few seconds but no one responded. Deciding it was probably a wrong call or something she set the phone back down. As she began walking back to the couch it rung again. She walked back again and picked it up quicker this time. "Hello?" she answered sounding annoyed. This time the only thing she heard was breathing on the other end. Feeling unnerved she quickly hung up and stared as it rung again. "Stop calling," she said assertively into the phone.
"Now is that any way to greet a friend?" The voice on the other end responded. Caitlyn froze in bewilderment at the caller. She didn't have a clue which of her friends would be calling her right now but she wasn't very amused.
"Sorry I just didn't expect anyone to call me this late," she responded as she looked at the clock. 12:40am.
"Aw I know this isn't late for you," the voice taunted on the other end. Caitlyn tensed a bit before letting loose. She laughed to herself for even forgetting.
"John I told you I couldn't go out tonight, but if you wanted I could maybe tomorrow," Caitlyn said smiling on the other end of the phone line. "You can pick me up around 8 or something," she continued oblivious.
"Who's John?" The voice responded curiously. Caitlyn could feel her heart drop into her stomach. She wasn't sure who was calling but she told herself it was probably nothing to worry about.
"Who is this?" she asked confused into the phone. She hoped that maybe someone had just been playing a joke on her.
"I'm less interested in talking about myself and more interested in talking about you," the voice responded tauntingly.
"Well I'm tired so I have to go," Caitlyn said.
"Caitlyn. I already know you don't sleep this early," the voice responded. She couldn't help but freeze as she griped the phone tighter wondering who was calling and knew her name.
"Don't fucking call again," she responded angrily as she hung up. Before she could even move from her spot it rang again. She waited a few seconds before deciding to answer the phone. "Listen I already said-"
"I just wanna talk," the voice interrupted smoothly. "After all isnt this conversation more fun than just watching the same reruns on TV anyways?" The voice continued. Caitlyn questioned herself for a second before returning to the conclusion that she had come to earlier.
"John this isn't funny anymore," Caitlyn said hoping that maybe it was him.
"I already told you. This isn't John," the voice responded darkly.
"I'm not talking until you tell me who you are," Caitlyn responded assertively as her hand held the phone closer to her ear.
"I think it's more fun this way, no?" the voice continued casually. Caitlyn could feel her patience drain as she slowly filled with anxiety. Her stomach turned as the line went silent waiting for her response. Whoever this was wasn't going to get anymore attention from her.
"No it's not now leave me alone," Caitlyn said as she tried to hang up the phone but the voice came through stronger this time.
"Hang up the phone and I'll spill your blood," the voice responded aggressively. Caitlyn tensed feeling her body go cold. "Caught your attention now didn't I?" the voice continued. "If you're just gonna stand there I'll do it anyways," the voice taunted. He could see her. She began to tremble slightly as she realized this was serious.
She didn't think twice as she hung up the phone and immediately grabbed a knife from her kitchen. She ran with the phone still in her hand down the hallway and into her bedroom. She closed the door behind her locking it. "Maybe, someone is just trying to play a joke," she thought to herself. She breathed heavily as she walked towards her closet trying to stay away from any entrances to her room. "Just calm down, ok?" she told herself quietly as her eyes closed. Sliding down with her back against her closest door as she slowly began to dial on the phone finding it difficult as her fingers shook. Before she could finish typing in the numbers the door gave out behind her and she fell back. She was disoriented at first and then she screamed out in terror as a white mask floated above her. She felt pressure as a boot stomped down onto her hand crushing it causing her to cry out more.
"I told you not to hang up," the figure above mocked.
