You skimmed through the phone book for the tenth time looking for anyone named Danny. After you had gotten home from work you had dedicated your time to doing more research on him and compiled a tiny list for yourself. His height was approximately 6'0". But you knew his boots gave him a bit of a boost. He was medium build not too buff but lean and strong for what he did. You hadn't ever really heard his real voice as he always used something to mask it. Was that even necessary? Had you ever ran into him outside his costume? The thought made you shiver as you wrote a small note next to that adding that it was possible. He had been in Roseville for a few months before you arrived. Maybe if you had found someone named Danny that had arrived around that time. Though Roseville was a smaller town it was still too much people to individually go through. What if he lied about his name? It didn't mater though as you continued to skim through the book. He gave you that name and you were going to take it as true for the time being. It was all you had to go off of. You had also listed all his victims since his arrival. You made notes of where they lived and kept the article for each one taking note of his time between each. Around 3 weeks between each victim give or take. You knew he stalked beforehand. He had done that with you. You also knew that he left photos at the scenes. Instant camera. Which brand was it? He would have to go to the store to restock. But were you really gonna go wait at every store to see who picked up camera film? That was out of the question. Especially since he could've stocked up from another town as to not leave trails here. Other places. Had he done this before? He seemed rather skilled at what he did. Cold and calculated. No clear pattern to help determine next victims. But in a way that was his pattern. Nice houses with innocent people. How the fuck did you catch his attention? Maybe he had committed a few crimes in other places without the whole Ghostface persona. You made another note to look for any murders in nearby states. As you continued to take notes down and flip through the book you heard the sound of steps behind you and it made you freeze. It didn't take long before his familiar scent filled your nose and made your stomach nauseous. You didn't bother to turn around as you felt his presence behind you. Instead the view of his gloved hand grabbed your attention as he promptly pointed at the notes you had taken. His pointer finger pressed firmly against his name.
"Johnson," a low rumble covered by static filled your ears. "Danny Johnson," he added as if you hadn't figured it out. A fury filled your chest at the sudden intrusion. You turned to look at him as he dropped his hand next to his side and titled his head to look down at you. You quickly stood up and he backed away to give you space to do so.
"What the fuck?" You spat out in annoyance.
"Isn't that what you're looking for?" He asked curiously as he waved his other hand holding his knife in the direction of your notes. "Trying to figure me out?" He asked and you seethed with rage.
"Why tell me?" You asked angrily. He chuckled as you stood there and crossed your arms.
"Are you really that angry that I gave you information you were looking for?" He asked as he shook his head. "You're hard to read sweets," he said causing you to scoff.
"I'm hard to read? Danny I can't ever even see your face. I'm having to play guessing games with your emotions constantly," you let out. He had pissed you off. You had spent so much time only for him to let it out so simply. It was a kick to your ego and he knew it.
"Really? I thought I made my intentions pretty obvious from the get go," he added and you screamed internally at his smugness.
"Well now I know your name," you replied silently cursing yourself at the minor threat. He probably wouldn't take that very casually, but to your surprise he had.
"Look through your pretty book sweetheart. It's a common name, or better yet realize that I'm not in it. You think I would let that be public information?" He asked and you shook your head. "And don't think I didn't catch that little threat of yours. I dont know what you think you're up to playing detective, but if I feel any sense of betrayal I'll end you before you can even let out a scream," he said in a tone you had rarely heard him use. Reserved for when he really wanted to scare you.
"So, you use an alias here then," you let out as the thoughts flowed through your brain.
"Now you're getting somewhere sweets. Took you a bit to think of that one huh?" He asked condescendingly.
"What name?" You asked knowing how far your chances were of actually learning.
"You're a real fucking idiot if you think I'm gonna tell you that," he said in a stern tone.
"Well am I ever gonna know? Are you just gonna hide yourself from me forever? Or... until you kill me?" You asked and though part of you didn't want to know you pushed through your fear. You weren't gonna let him do this to you forever. You were gonna take control. Whether it be today or another you were gonna take a stand.
"You're pushing your luck sweets," he replied and you swallowed the spit that had accumulated in your mouth before he approached you ever so slightly. You quickly used the space you had left and walked backwards bumping into your desk.
"What are you gonna do? You've already threatened me. Just do it," you said as you stood your ground. You were gonna call his bluff.
"I don't think you want that. I think you're scared. You're at wits end and you think that you can do something about it. Poor helpless you is gonna take me down. If you want this false sense of empowerment I'm more than happy to entertain you. But sweets you really think its a good idea to egg me on?" He said as he approached you again and you pushed further back on the desk. "If you're really so desperate as to give up why even do it? Why let you feel any sense of control when you know I wont make it easy? You really want me to kill you? Ok, I'll fucking gut you where you stand, and when I'm done fucking you up so badly you can't walk but you're still breathing I'll find your fucking friends and give them the same treatment. Ive already done the work sweetheart. I know their lives front to back. From where they work to what fucking cereal they eat in the mornings," he said aggressively and you cowered as you felt the pressure of his tone crush you.
"I-I'm sorry," you broke under the pressure. This was his game not yours. You weren't a player you were a pawn.
"All this fucking time and you still try to act tough. It was cute at first sweets but you can't keep up with your own words. All bark no bite. I'm just waiting for when you're gonna realize the only thing I want from you is to sit prettily waiting for me or better yet placed on your fucking knees the second I walk through your door," he said as his knife was pointed up towards you.
"You know I wont do that," you responded quickly.
"Yeah, you think your little act of pretending you don't want me will save your morality. You're just as fucked as me and you know it," he chuckled and you shook your head. Though the fear had filled your body and resided heavily in your stomach you knew he was wrong.
"I don't have a choice Danny. Like it or not I can't afford to say no," you said fearfully but honestly.
"Then why enjoy it so much? If you really think I'm horrible why would you savor in it instead of despising me more?" He asked and you stayed silent. You weren't sure why but you weren't gonna entertain him by slipping up and stumbling over your words. "Exactly," he said as you remained quietly looking at him.
"What do you gain from this? Why do this to me? I wanna know if you're gonna kill me Danny," you said feeling the fear wash over you. You had started to shake and tears threatened to spill and run down your cheeks but you needed to know. You were desperate at this point.
"I already told you. I'm not sure," he responded and you shook with fear and anger.
"Will I ever get to know you? Or are you just gonna disappear on me? I-I wouldn't tell anyone anything," you said as you considered the possibilities.
"Why sound so sad about it if you don't like me?" He asked and you bit down on the inside of your lip refusing to respond. He nodded understandingly oddly enough before he continued. "What do you see happening? What would you want?" He asked and the question threw you off.
"Those are two different answers Danny," you replied and he nodded again as he got closer to you.
"Explain them to me then," he asked as he stood close enough that your chests were almost touching.
"I- I don't see myself living. But- I want to. I want a normal life. Without you. I don't- I don't care if I stop you. I just don't want you here Danny. I- I want to be happy for once and not feel like this outside source is just taking everything from me. I never had much of a good life and I thought that was gonna be different here. I- I made friends for once. I earned a job that I actually care about. I-I fell in love," you whispered the last part and he froze.
"If you don't want me. Then I wont be here," he said and his words hit you like a truck.
"W-what?" You asked confused. You hadn't processed what he said exactly. You didn't realize the impact of what he was proposing.
"If none of this is a choice for you, then I'll leave," he said and you felt as if every ounce of strength you had left had exited your body at once. He approached you again as you failed to respond. Your brain short circuiting at what he was saying. He pressed against you his chest now firmly against yours as you leaned back onto the desk. He placed his hands on either side of you and forced you to stare directly at the mesh that hid his eyes. It left you wondering again what his eyes looked like.
"I-" you couldn't even begin to form the words. Was he really giving you a choice now? Why was it so hard to say it? Why did it hurt? His hand touched your cheek gently and you froze at the feeling of the fabric slowly grazing your skin.
"Just tell me sweets. And I'll do it," he asked and his words filled your brain as you tried to gather the words you needed to say.
"I want you to leave Danny. I don't want to see you again. I think you would be better alone," you said them feeling yourself crush even more than before. It wasn't even hidden. Your voice was shaky and you sounded so unsure. He had to have known that it hurt you. Though, you didn't know why.
"Then I'll go," he said as his hand fell from your face. It grazed his side as it hung there sadly. He sounded hurt behind the voice changer he had. And for a moment you felt bad. Though, you knew it was better for you. It was better for Jed and everyone else you wanted to protect. He didn't say anything after. He just stared at you silently before he turned around and walked over to your bedroom window that had been pried open. He didn't turn around to look at you before he left like he usually did. Instead, he simply raised one of his legs over the window sill and did the same with the other as he hopped out. It was an odd sight as usually he left through the back, but you figured it was more convenient this way. As if to solidify your decision you walked up to your window and closed it shut before locking it. You looked back up but he had already disappeared into the night. It wasn't until you had sat down on your bed afterwards to try to get some sleep that you broke. The pressure had finally consumed you whole as you cried loudly into the empty room that had surrounded you.
