It had been a few weeks since you had begun working at the Gazette and everything was going accordingly. You felt a sense of relief at the idea that things were going well for once. You had even got around to writing more as you had gotten a new idea recently, though as you walked up to your desk you noticed it was messier than usual which confused you as you usually left it organized. You brushed it off before you worked on it for a few hours before you decided to take a break and watch tv. The soft feeling of the couch brushed against your legs as you sat in your usual pajamas consistent of shorts and a tee shirt as the television played in front of you. You had been watching a rerun of an old horror movie as the station had been playing them all month long for October.
Ring... ring.... ring.... your brows furrowed as you questioned who could be calling you at this time. You quickly walked to the phone before answering it. "Hello?" You asked but heard nothing. "I'm sorry I can't hear you," you stated thinking maybe that there was something wrong with the phone line. You waited a couple of seconds before deciding to hang up. You thought of the time a few nights ago when that had first happened. It gave you some chills but you brushed them off. Maybe it was someone trying to play a prank on you. Then the phone started to ring again. You froze for a couple of seconds before picking up.
"Hello?" You asked into the phone. Your voice was a bit shaky.
"Hello," a voice responded on the other end.
"Um who is this?" You asked feeling your anxiety rise a bit.
"Im surprised you don't already know," the voice responded slightly ominously.
"No, im sorry you must have the wrong number or something. Goodbye," you said before you hung up the phone.
Then it started to ring again. You second guessed yourself before answering the phone.
"Listen I think you have the wr-" you started to say before the voice cut you off.
"I know who I'm calling," the voice responded calmly.
"Well I would like to know who is calling," you replied trying to be assertive.
"Are you sure you don't already know?" the voice asked making you even more confused.
"I'm not gonna play games," you stated firmly.
"But that makes it more fun," the voice responded.
"Who are you?" You asked again angrily.
"Do you really want to know?" The voice asked mockingly.
"If you don't tell me who you are I'm going to hang up," you replied.
"Then I'll just have to pay you a visit," the voice responded making you shudder. Who was this caller? What did they want from you?
"Yeah sure. I'm so scared," you mocked trying to fake a toughness you didn't have. Though the shakiness of your voice still had shone through a bit.
"Aw she's trying to act tough," the voice mocked again. "Well if you really wanna know I'm at your front door," the voice stated making you shudder. You stayed silent for a bit unsure if it was a bluff or not. "Well aren't you gonna answer it?" The voice asked.
"What do you want?" You almost screamed into the phone.
"What happened? I thought you weren't afraid," the voice responded as you remained frozen in your spot in the kitchen. "Well aren't you gonna go see who it is? You've been asking all night," the voice said ominously. You could feel your heart start pumping faster. "You know it's rude to leave guests waiting," the voice added.
"Please. Just leave me alone," you begged into the phone as you could feel tears forming in your eyes.
"But I just got here," the voice faked a sadness.
"If you don't leave then-" you started to threaten before you got cut off again.
"Then what? You're gonna act tough again? How tough are you with a knife at your throat?" The voice responded aggressively causing you to shudder. That was it. You couldn't take it. You slammed the phone back on the receiver.
You ran over to the knife rack you had on the counter and pulled out the largest one you had. "It was a prank call. It was a prank call," you repeated to yourself slowly. You gripped the knife tightly in your hands as you walked over to your front door and took a deep breath before looking through the peek hole. You only saw the poorly lit street in front of your house and you sighed. It was a bluff. It was just a prank call. Nothing more. Your breath was shaky as you made sure the door was locked. Despite thinking it had just been a prank you walked throughout your house making sure every window was locked and every curtain closed. You didn't want to take any chances. You felt crazy walking throughout your home holding a knife but when you finally made it to your room you let yourself relax a bit feeling your shoulders fall slightly after being so tense. You looked around before you decided it was safe though you still left the light on. You walked over to your bed and slowly got under the covers feeling the softness of the blanket as it comforted you slightly. The night was rough however as you laid there for what felt like hours before you calmed at the fact that there hadn't been any more calls. You laughed a bit to yourself thinking it really just had been someone trying to scare you and everything was fine. That you were going to be ok. At least that's what you told yourself. You looked over at the knife before you finally relaxed. You had to get some rest. After calming down somewhat you felt your eyes start to slowly close as you drifted off to sleep.
