You looked nervously at your reflection in the mirror as you examined your outfit. Sara had helped you pick out your costume. At first you were unsure what to wear until you finally decided on being a witch. The short fluffy black skirt had barely managed to cover your thighs and the black crop top with a laced front had hugged your body closely. At least the black witch hat on your head seemed decent. You adjusted it as you sighed unsure if it was a good idea. Not only did you feel slightly uncomfortable at your outfit, but the idea of going to a Halloween party where everyone was most likely to be masked seemed like a terrible idea with a murderer running amok.
"You look cute trust me," Sara said as she stood behind you in her skin tight red dress. She had dressed up as a sexy vampire and you couldn't help as you rolled your eyes looking at her.
"I don't know isn't it a bit-" you started to say but she cut you off.
"You look cute. Stop worrying," she said as she grabbed your arm. "Now we have to get going Kristy and Josh are already there," she said and you nodded.
You winced as the cold air hit your skin when you stepped outside. You had driven to Sara's but the two of you were walking to the party as it was only about a block away from where she lived. You wanted to drive but she insisted it would be fine.
Each step forward made your anxiety rise at the thought of being surrounded by a sea of drunk people. Hopefully, Sara wouldn't just leave you alone but you weren't sure as you hadn't really gone to a party with her before. She seemed rather cheery though as the two of you approached the frat house the party was at and you grimaced at the guys in the front lawn chugging cans of beer in some sort of competition. The two of you walked inside and suddenly loud music engulfed your ears as Sara pulled you through the crowd into the living room where you saw Kristy and Josh talking to some people you had never met before.
"Ooooo looking good," Kristy said to you and Sara as you approached them and you looked around nervously. She had on some cat ears with a black dress and a tail hanging behind her.
"You too. I love those ears," Sara replied as they hugged briefly. You gave Kristy a side hug before Josh spoke up. He had been dressed as a football player and you couldn't help but laugh lightly considering that he was actually a football player.
"Hey, I'm actually glad you came I know you aren't a party person but maybe we can change that," he laughed and you nodded.
"It's a little loud," you replied unsure of what else to say and he laughed again.
"Yeah that's usually the case," he replied and you laughed feeling embarrassed by your comment.
"Drinks are over there on that table," he shouted loudly over the music and you nodded as did Sara. She began to talk to Kristy after and you stood there a bit awkwardly until Josh spoke up again. He put his arm around you and you tensed a bit as he talked. "Hey if anyone makes you feel uncomfortable just tell me ok? I got you," he said and it surprised you a bit.
"Thanks," you said back in his ear and he smiled before giving you a thumbs up. He released his arm from around you before he began talking to Kristy, Sara, and the other people that had been there before your arrival. After a few introductions you sat there awkwardly occasionally nodding and giving half smiles whenever people looked over at you. You had made a joke or two, though they fell flat and you tensed even more feeling unable to fit in properly. It was usually this difficult for you. You had tried but small talk was usually the worst and you found yourself never knowing exactly when to say something or what to say at all. Occasionally you would peak around just to keep an eye or two on your surroundings. You could never be too safe plus avoiding eye contact made it easier to get by. The music was so loud you could barely hear people as they shouted at each other and your anxiety thumped away almost matching the beat around you. The people you hadn't seen before were friends of Sara's from her classes at the community college and you pretended to be interested as they talked about the other parties that had gone on so far. You mentioned you had been working at the Roseville Gazette and Sara laughed telling them that you had come into the grocery store looking for that terrible coffee brand your boss had asked for. The conversation seemed to lighten up a bit after that and you felt more comfortable talking though you still stumbled over your words occasionally.
Sara eventually decided it was time to dance and though she tried to pull you along you kindly refused and she understood. Kristy and her went over to the crowd of people and you stood back watching them dance for a bit before turning to Josh only to see him busy talking to someone. You bit the inside of your cheek lightly as you looked around wondering what to do. It was just one night and it was kind of a favor for Sara you tried to remind yourself as you stood alone and awkward. Deciding on maybe getting something to drink instead of standing there you walked up to Sara who was busy dancing with Kristy before tapping on her shoulder.
"Hey," you said before she turned to look at you. "I'm gonna get a drink," you said and she nodded at you smiling before turning back around.
You smiled back before turning and looking nervously at the crowd. The table seemed so much further with how much people you would have to get through. As you pushed nervously past people dressed as zombies, nurses, and even some robots you stumbled a bit before someone caught your arm and you thanked them. Your breath hitched a bit as you looked back at the person seeing their mask. It was a green mask with circle cut outs for the eyes and a smile drawn on it.
"Sorry, you startled me," you said and the man laughed.
"It's cool," he said before he let go of your arm and you continued walking to the table lined with chips, drinks, and other snacks. You debated momentarily whether you wanted to drink tonight and decided maybe it would help calm your nerves a bit. You picked up a red solo cup and began to fill it with a red punch that was mixed with who knows what. The liquid almost spilled over the brim of your cup and you decided to take a quick sip and the taste that hit your tongue caused you to grimace. The burning in your throat felt uncomfortable but you quickly warmed up to it as you continued to drink. It was a lot stronger than you expected and you reminded yourself to be careful since you were a bit of a lightweight.
"Definitely more than one type of alcohol in there" you thought to yourself before turning back around. You tried to see where Sara had been but couldn't make her out through all the people and decided to sit at the table for a bit. You watched as people swirled by as you took more sips of your drink until eventually you had finished it. Thinking it hadn't been enough you filled your cup again as someone walked up next to you.
"A little eager there aren't you?" the voice struck you out of your silence and you looked over to see the man who had helped you earlier.
"Um, maybe just a bit," you giggled as you took another sip of your drink.
"I haven't seen you around before. You new here?" he asked and you questioned for a moment whether you wanted to tell this mysterious man more about yourself but decided it was probably fine and nothing to worry about.
"Just been here a few months. Im actually here because of Sara I don't know if you know her," you said back a little loudly thanks to the music and he shook his head 'no'.
"Well whoever she is I'm glad she brought you along," the guy said in a flirty tone and you smiled a bit drunkenly.
"Thanks," you replied awkwardly before turning away from him. You took a sip of your drink while he grabbed a cup off the table and you couldn't help but drift off as he kept saying more. As you looked around something had caught your eye. Someone you hadn't seen yet. Someone dressed in a red robe topped with a white mask that had some sort of evil look on it. It looked like it had to have been some homemade outfit. At least the robe had to have been. At first your chest stopped. It looked oddly similar to that of the Ghostface mask. Though, at the same time it was different. The face was contorted into an over exaggerated smile that made it seem almost excited. As you sat lost in your thoughts you hadn't realized they had been staring back until the head titled ever so slightly. It felt playful almost.
"So what do you think of the mask?" the guy from earlier brought you out of your little haze.
"Oh i-its cool. Did you make it yourself?" you asked and he nodded and when you went to look back at the person from earlier you didn't see them anymore.
"You wanna go upstairs?" his voice distracted you again and you looked back at him a bit surprised. He had his hand rested on your lower arm now and you stayed frozen unsure of what to do.
"Uh- no. Sorry I'm seeing someone," you replied quickly feeling your anxiety start to come back a bit.
"Are they here?" the guy asked and that made you furrow your brows. The question threw you off but you weren't alone. You were surrounded by plenty of people. Even if you didn't know them.
"I'm not interested," you replied assertively and backed up a tiny bit.
"Woah it's cool," he said letting go of your arm.
You didn't respond, instead you started to walk away and head back to your group of friends only you couldn't find them. You sighed in annoyance before moving through the people pushing past anyone who didn't let you through and kept trying to look for your friends. It was then you saw the person dressed up in that freaky mask again that you had seen earlier. They were staring at you near the hallway and you stopped momentarily ignoring everyone around you. For a moment it felt like it was just you and them. In some sort of drunken haze you forgot exactly why you were worried and instead you felt curious. Your hand shook a bit as you raised it and waved at them slowly. The person in the mask raised their arm and waved back in a manner that felt almost eerie and you smiled awkwardly before continuing to move through the people. After a while of not finding your friends and downing another drink in the process you felt overwhelmed and decided maybe it would be best to take a break. "It's fine," you told yourself as you stumbled upstairs. You just needed some peace and quiet then in a bit you could try again. You looked down the hallway until you found a door left ajar and you peaked into the dark room. It was empty and you let out a sigh of relief as your drunken haze continued to grow. You dropped back onto the bed and stared up at the ceiling as the room spun a bit around you. Maybe you had taken too much too fast. You didn't think to let it kick in before you haphazardly thought to chug more. It had been almost an hour or so and the comfortable buzz had grown into a nausea inducing trance. You tried closing your eyes but that only made it worse so you sat up slowly and decided maybe it was time for you to go home. It had been a while anyways and maybe Sara wouldn't mind. You stood up carefully and headed outside of the room drunkenly moving about until you had accidentally bumped into someone.
"Sorry," you said words stumbling from your lips as you looked up. For a moment you could feel your heart stop and every muscle in your body tense. It was the same man from earlier who you had awkwardly waved at. He didn't respond as he held your arm tightly and although it was probably the fact that you were drunk, he oddly reminded you of Ghostface. He even had a strong cologne scent though this one smelled slightly different. You pulled back from his grasp quickly and made your way downstairs stumbling as you went. You didn't dare look behind you as you reached the last step. You used the extra height for the moment to try and look around to see where Sara had been only you didn't find her. The music pounded in your ears so loudly and although you had gotten scared for a moment you seemed to calm down. You needed to in order to focus.
"This party was such a terrible idea," you thought to yourself as you continued to look over the crowded room. How the hell would you find them? You tried to reason with yourself and decided Kristy and Josh would probably walk Sara home. With that in mind you hopped down the last step and pushed past people as you walked towards the front door. You would be fine walking home but maybe that was the alcohol talking. It didn't matter though as everything had become too much and you felt overwhelmed by all the people that surrounded you. You'd rather be alone. Apart from that the man that had eerily reminded you of Ghostface had struck a chord deep down and being drunk didn't help as you began to feel sadness wash over you. It wasn't something you wanted to think about though.
When you finally made it to the front door you pushed it open and stepped out feeling the cold autumn air nip at your legs. You looked down and grumbled knowing you probably should have picked a warmer outfit. Despite your attempts to fight away those feelings your thoughts began to flow one into another about Danny. What the hell where you gonna do about him? You felt so helpless and confused. On one end you were terrified of him and on the other part you missed him. Quickly, you shut that thought down and instead you thought of Jed. You wanted to break down right there but continued to trudge forward.
The crunch of the leaves under your feet was a pleasant distraction as you made your way back to Sara's home. She had invited you to stay the night after the party and you agreed when she mentioned she had picked up some horror movies the two of you could watch at her house afterwards. You should have just stayed home. One of your favorite holidays now just felt almost ruined. Of course you were grateful Sara invited you and you enjoyed hanging out with her, it just wasn't your cup of tea.
As you continued to walk in the dark you held yourself loosely before you suddenly stopped. Your feet scraped against the sidewalk as you turned looking around not remembering where you had been going. Certainly this was the right way. You were sure her house was just a block or so from the party. Yet the walk seemed a lot longer than you had remembered. The dimly lit street suddenly felt a lot bigger and lonely as your eyes darted around trying to think of where her house had been. You couldn't remember well and your anxiety picked up again.
You turned back thinking maybe you should head back to the party but you stopped abruptly as you looked down the street. It was the guy from earlier. His red robe although dark was visible from where you were and his mask was a stark contrast to the night sky. You felt yourself sober up rather quickly as he stared at you stopped as well. His mask had red blotches you couldn't make out super well from the distance but it frightened you. The red seemed to shimmer in the moonlight and you could've sworn it was blood. Without a second thought you turned back around and booked it. You ripped off the witch hat you had been wearing and gripped it tightly as you sprinted down the street. You weren't even sure where you were running you just continued. Your breathing sped up and grew heavier as you continued to sprint away from him. You looked around and suddenly your eyes lit up as you saw it. Sara's house. You were headed the right way.
Without even looking both ways you ran across the street and looked under her mat where she told you she had left a spare key. In case you found yourself coming home sooner than her. You laughed in a desperate sort of way at the fact that she had been right but still worried about the idea of being followed. Were you being followed? It couldn't have been him could it have? The thought made you shudder and your hands shook as you tried to unlock the door. Eventually when you managed to get it open you stumbled in and shut the door quickly behind you locking it as fast as you could. You only stopped to for a moment before your legs shook as walked over and looked out one of the side windows to make sure no one was outside and to your relief there wasn't. It had probably just been the fact that you were so drunk. It was probably nothing to worry about. You dropped the witch hat down onto the living room table and you plopped down onto the couch feeling your legs give out under you. You stretched out your hand in front of you after realizing you had such a death grip on the hat from how tense you were. Your insides felt knotted as you recalled what had happened.
There was no way he would just be out at a party like that. Given it's not like his attire was exactly the same. You pondered as you laid back on the couch staring up at the ceiling. Was that blood on his mask? Who's was it? The sadness loomed over you again and you started to cry. It was louder than you had anticipated but for once you wanted to let it out. Months of being terrified and of waking up in the middle of the night from yet another nightmare. Switching your locks to no avail. Having to pretend like everything was fine in front of everyone. Never telling anyone or else you risked their life and yours. Waking up sore every day after he had visited you. New bruises and cuts to match. That wasn't the worst of it though. The worst was that you kind of liked him. That he had stirred emotions in you that you hadn't felt before. You wanted to justify it somehow. That maybe it was just that you felt you needed to do it to survive. Though at the same time maybe it was the thrill. Regardless, it had turned your life upside down. You wanted to build a new life here. You had been doing so well and now you were a mess.
You wiped your tears with your hands as you thought about the night over again. Had he been there just to watch you? No, it couldn't have been him. Maybe you were just a lot more fucked up than you realized and it was just someone dressed up for the party. "Yeah, It was probably just that," you said out loud to yourself almost as a way to calm yourself. You didn't know how long you had cried for but when you finally felt the tears start to slow you sat up and looked at the living room around you. You just needed to keep your mind busy.
Sara's house was rather clean and she had it filled with nice furniture and decorations that made it feel cozy. Pictures of her and her friends hung on the walls and sat neatly placed on her entertainment center. It was a lot different than your empty house. It made you wish you had done a bit more. Though with your income you were struggling just to afford the house itself. It was then you remembered Sara's parents were a little more well off. They helped her a lot because of it. That only made you worry. That maybe just being there would put her in danger. For a second you considered just pushing everyone around you away. That would keep them safer. You would be devastated if anything happened to her. People would be devastated if anything happened to her. It was then you remembered that people actually cared about what happened to her. Would people care about what happened to you? Your body probably wouldn't even be found until months later. You chuckled despite the dark thought of it. It was better to laugh about it then to let the thought drag you down. You sighed and stared ahead until your eyes landed on a stack of vhs tapes sat on the table in front of you. Even though you just wanted to sleep that would be difficult as your body still had some adrenaline pumping through it. You decided maybe a movie would distract you in the meantime.
It took you a few moments before you actually managed to stand up and walk over to the table. Kneeling down as you sifted through them. A groan escaped your mouth at all the horror movies feeling upset that lately you hadn't enjoyed them as much as you used to. Sure, they were still fun to watch but when you had an actual murderer visiting you every now and then they just amplified your anxiety. After sorting through your options and finally picking something you pushed the tape into the vcr and walked to the kitchen to get yourself some food. You weren't hungry and you felt a bit sick still from how scared you had gotten earlier but you needed something in your stomach to try and sober up. You rummaged through the fridge continuously moving things until you found something light to snack on.
You didn't know when you had fallen asleep exactly but the sound of the door being thrown wide open made you jolt up on the couch. A sense of relief hit you as you saw Sara walk through the door but it quickly dissipated as you saw the expression on her face. She seemed shaken and you stared at her silently.
"Oh my god I was so worried I didn't know you came home!" she said as she ran over to you. It wasn't until she was near that you noticed her makeup had been smeared down her cheeks from how badly she must've been crying. She immediately hugged you before pulling back and before you could even say anything her voice rang out filled with cries.
"Josh is dead."
