You had moved to Washington, as it was far away from Florida and the plentiful forests and beaches had made for great trips as you and Danny had liked to go into nature often. You did a few camping trips even and Danny would point out the constellations under the stars for you. Though, you couldn't memorize them as well as he could. He had gone by Danny Johnson now. Opting to not have another fake name and it made you happy as you figured you probably wouldn't have been able to keep up with calling him another one. He was a freelance photographer as it allowed him to do something he enjoyed while also being able to get away from people when he needed to, and you had finished publishing your first horror novel. Danny was ever so kind to take the photograph for your book as you wanted him to and though he had tried to show you many times you still struggled at taking photos as well as he did. He had also given you some pointers for your story to make it more... realistic. It had sold pretty well and Danny celebrated by taking you out for a fancy dinner. He spoiled you pretty often and you figured it had been because he still felt guilty for what he did. You were mad for a long time though as the two of you talked through it more you started to understand it better. You weren't sure if it was something you could ever really get over, but you appreciated his efforts. He had done a lot for you and he really did try his best to make it up to you. He kept his word and though you were hesitant at first he seemed to be getting used to it.
Not everything was perfect of course. Danny still had his moments where you could tell he was getting frustrated at not being able to go do things how he used to. Some days he would just wake up in a bad mood, but he wasn't ever mean. He just stayed silent and you would cuddle up to him on the couch opting for more comedic movies. You figured horror wasn't a great idea in those times. Sometimes he would just walk in the nearby forest and though you joined him many times when you were busy he would take Cinnamon. It was the dog he had just brought home suddenly one day. Which was only a reminder of the fact that he was still sometimes impulsive.
"You brought home a dog?" You asked as he took off his shoes in the entrance of the home the two of you had got.
"I saw him by the store. He looked like a stray and well he looked so sad," he said as he kneeled down and pet him on the head as he looked up at you. "I was thinking we could call him Cinnamon," he said smiling up at you again still petting the dog. The golden retriever that had been sitting barking as you stared at him in disbelief. He charged at you without warning and jumped on you trying to lick your face. You managed to get the dog to sit down as you gave him a few pets before looking up at Danny.
"Fine, only because he's so cute," you said as you kneeled down before him and gave him a few pets. "Aren't you?" You said and the dog barked again.
Though, it was still difficult over time Danny had gotten a bit better. He didn't get upset as often and instead turned to new hobbies to distract him. He had really enjoyed nature and so he kept a log of plants he would come across and would learn all about them. It helped keep him busy and you enjoyed it when he brought you home cute flowers. He also had been really good at sewing and you laughed when you found out, but it turned out to be handy as he helped to fix your clothes when they would get tears from the rocks or branches while hiking. Though photography remained his favorite and he would take photos of all the areas you guys had visited. You had even set up a red room in one of the extra rooms in the house. You really lived up to his expectation when you had forgotten one day and opened the door letting all the light in and overexposing the photos. Danny was upset, but as you cuddled up to him and told him sorry he laughed and said that you would just have to go with him to the beach again to retake the photos. You agreed before he also added that he would have to punish you for what you did. The sex that night had been great. He always seemed to have the energy even when you felt you had none left.
You had made a couple friends here and there, but you didn't hang out too often. You had even convinced Danny to join you a couple times, but he never seemed really happy and you could tell he was putting on an act for them. You spent most of your time with each other for the most part, but you were content with that. The two of you had shown each other a lot and enjoyed exploring together. He had become your best friend. You still had movie nights often and Cinnamon would always join you two as he tried to lay on the couch despite it being small. You had also had game nights and though he had taught you, you never could beat him at chess. Something about having to think four moves ahead of everything was better suited to him than you. You were much better at checkers. Though even then he had won more than you.
Danny tried a bit to understand himself better as he read through some psychology books only to end up getting frustrated and saying that "They never really got it," to which you nodded and tried to understand him better. He had told you a lot about his home life and how he grew up. To which, you understood why he was the way he was. It didn't seem very easy, and you felt it had been a lot worse than yours. You told him you understood why he was the way that he was when he told you but he laughed it off saying even if it had been good he didn't think he would have been much different. You frowned a bit at that, but you appreciated his honesty. Nonetheless, he still read through the books sometimes to try to get it. He had even tried to help you with your anxiety, but you felt that the deep breathing techniques never came in handy when you needed them. You appreciated his help regardless and he supported you through everything you did. You had tried to take up painting and when you told him the idea might be nice you came home one day to a stack of easels and a bunch of new paints and brushes. You didn't think you were that great, but he liked everything you did.
Some nights, you would talk to Danny about his past, and he told you everything. Even details you weren't sure you wanted to know, but you figured it would be better for him to share his experiences than keep them inside. He didn't have much empathy for anyone other than himself, you, and Cinammon. He even admitted to that which made you a bit sad. Though, one night when talking about everything he had said something that made you surprised.
"I didn't feel bad and I still don't, but I think I kind of get it. I don't care about them, but if something like that had happened to you, I would be sad," he said as he held you close to him on the couch.
That had changed a lot for you and even though you didn't like what he had done in the past it made you feel a bit better that he at least got that. When the two of you had left Roseville after the talk of Ghostface had died down because everyone thought he had moved to another town the two of you moved and one night when you had gone camping with him the two of you had brought everything relating to his past. You watched the flames as they consumed all the photographs he had taken. All of the notes, items, and the clothes. You felt a bit sad watching the mask going up into flames.
"It was kind of hot. Im not gonna lie," you joked and he burst into laughter.
"Yeah? Well I can always get another," he said to which you shook your head.
"Let's just keep it tying me up. Ok?" You said and he reluctantly agreed.
"Fine, but if you ever want another masked occasion. Im all for it," he said as he held up his hands.
The memory made you smile as you looked at the cinnamon buns before you. You had finally found a recipe that Danny said had been his absolute favorite when he tried them. You made them for him often and he always woke up excited when you did. You started putting the icing on them as you heard him walk over.
You looked over as he appeared in only his shirt and underwear which made you smile. He stretched and you couldn't help but stare at him as he did so. He smirked as he watched you staring.
"Hey handsome," you joked and he chuckled.
"Cinammon buns?" He asked and you nodded. "You're the best," he said as he walked up behind you and wrapped his arms around you. You smiled as you felt the warmth of his body as he hugged you. It always felt right.
"They're still hot," you said as he reached forward. Though he didn't listen to your protests as he dipped his finger in the icing on one of them before sticking it in his mouth. "Danny! That one looked so good too," you whined and he chuckled.
"It's definitely good," he said and you laughed.
"Go sit down. I'll bring them over right now," you said.
"Ok," he replied before he leaned in and gave you a kiss on the cheek.
When they were ready you brought them to him as the two of you sat on the couch and ate your Cinammon buns as the morning cartoons played on TV. When you were done you had reached to grab his plate to clean them off but he stopped you and instead pulled you on top of him. You yelped in surprise and he laughed before he leaned in to kiss you. You pressed back as you felt his smile on your lips. He pulled away suddenly before looking up at you.
"I was thinking..." he started.
"Oh thats never a good sign is it," you joked.
"You didn't let me finish," he said and you nodded. "I want to marry you," he said and you froze. Though, not from fear. His hand had been gently rubbing your cheek as you sat there unsure how to react. His eyes shone brightly as he stared at you and you grew lost in them as you tried to think.
"What?" You asked shocked.
"I want you to be my wife," he said and you stared back at him. "What? You don't want to be Mrs. Johnson?" He joked. You stayed silent for a moment processing his words.
"No, its not that I just. I didn't expect you to want that," you replied.
"Well, I do. So, uh I guess this is my way of asking. Will you marry me?" He asked and you felt the tears start to well up in your eyes. You laughed at how cheesy you felt.
"Yes," you replied.
"Later then? I know the courthouse and everything and its open til like 7," he said and you nodded as you laughed.
"Of course you already know where," you laughed as you hugged him.
"I can take you somewhere nice to eat after or I can make you something here," he said and you shook your head.
"I love you Danny," you said as you leaned back and looked at him. He smiled widely at that.
"I love you too," he said before he leaned in to give you another kiss.
