Seeing ghosts

Danny groaned as his alarm told him it was time to get up. He was out late last night again looking for his next victim at Walleye's. He would go there often to find someone to stalk and kill. Sometimes he would just do an impromptu visit if he didn't feel patient enough to go through the whole process. His last victim Caitlyn took up quite a bit of time and he was eager for more. He rarely took breaks from his work and if he did he would make sure to quickly get started again. He had already written up an article for Caitlyn as well making his day job a lot easier. He often did that. The article would be written up almost as soon as he had picked his next target. He knew he would have to go out and get some photos as well as quotes from the victims families. That was just the cherry on top to his work. Watching just how well his work paid off with front row seats. He took a sip of his coffee as he finished getting ready. He had remembered his new coworker and felt slightly frustrated thinking how she could've made a good next target. She was good looking and nice. However, Danny was not impulsive and he picked carefully. He knew his coworkers were off limits as that would make him suspicious and he couldn't have that. Especially not when his role as Jed was convincing enough to work there. Though something about her did seem slightly off. Maybe it was her awkwardness or the fact that she didn't even have any experience in this type of field and he questioned how she could land the job. Given, he had landed it quite easily with some charisma. Either way the curiosity of it furthered his infatuation with her. Maybe if he had the time he would stalk her a bit too. He didn't have to go any further than that. But if she ever decided to work somewhere else maybe it would give him the opportunity to strike.

You focused on the stack of papers in front of you as you tried to correct them as quickly and as accurately as possible. It had been non stop since you had gotten to work. Despite it having been a week since you began working there you were constantly forced to adapt quickly as they constantly needed you helping with various tasks. You had just finished restocking the supply closet and now you were back to correcting unfinished articles. You found it kind of fun despite being tedious work. You were just happy to get a job in a field you cared about. Not to mention you enjoyed the environment as almost everyone was nice other than Brad. Samantha was really helpful when you had questions. Mostly everyone else kept to themselves but were willing to help if needed. Jed hadn't been in the office too much as he did a lot of field work but when he was in working on articles he usually said hi and sometimes you would find yourself staring at him before catching yourself and feeling embarrassed. Jed was rather good looking but you knew it probably wouldn't be good to date a coworker and you really cared about your position there. That didn't mean it wasn't nice looking at him though.
You looked up as you watched Jed walk into the gazette. He was here earlier than usual. You tried not to accidentally stare again and got back to work. The pages in front of you were filled with red marks you had left as you corrected them. You continued to read through another piece that Brad had written about the local market feeling boredom wash over you.
"Hey," a voice said making you jump in your seat a bit. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to scare you," Jed said as you looked up at him.
"Oh no it's fine. Just a bit too immersed," you replied awkwardly.
He gave you a smile and you could feel your heart skip a beat. "I was just gonna ask if the article from a few days ago is done," he stated and it took you a second to remember.
"Oh yeah I have it here," you said sifting through the paperwork on your desk. It had been a followup article to the one on Ghostface that had come out last week. You remembered how the day you had come in to work after the news broke was quite hectic. Now it was an article containing quotes from the victim's families. It was rough having to read those and left you frightened at the thought that no one knew who it was and it could happen again.
"Thanks I have to get this to Bob today," he said. Bob had reviewed everything before letting it get published. It was a smaller newsprint but he caredk about the quality of the work.
"Do they know anything else?" you asked letting curiosity get the best of you.
"About what happened?" Jed asked unsure of what you meant.
"Yeah, I mean they haven't said much on the news anymore other than when it first happened," you replied.
"No we don't know much either. It's just a waiting game," Jed said making you feel disheartened. "Hey, it's gonna be ok though," he added and you realized it was probably obvious you were worried.
"Thanks," you replied sheepishly before he nodded and walked away.
The day had gone by slowly and you began to eat your lunch in the break room when Jed walked in. He had usually gone out to eat but sometimes when he was too busy to leave he would eat here and talk to you mainly about work.
"Just a sandwich again?" he asked and you nodded not replying as you still had food in your mouth. He sat down next to you after grabbing his food from the fridge.
"What did you write about before?" you asked leaving him looking a bit confused. "Before the Ghostface articles," you said feeling a chill after saying his name. It made you feel a bit silly but you did get scared quite easily.
"Mainly just community events. Not too much in a small town like this. I mean occasionally you get the petty crimes but I didn't typically write those as they're just side pieces and thats Brads work. Or used to be his work," he said before taking a bite of his food.
"I guess that makes sense. I guess Ghostface kinda ruined everything here huh?" you said laughing before seeing his face. You couldn't quite make out his expression but he then started laughing reassuring you that you hadn't said anything stupid.
"You could say that. Unfortunately a lot of people start to pick up the paper when they read those things. So in a way despite how horrible it is it keeps us in business," he said with a bit of a frown on his face.
"Yeah I mean. Personally I find it difficult to read. It makes me queasy," you admitted.
"It was difficult for me at first too but I think I've kind of gotten desensitized to it," he said.
"It feels like everyone here has. I mean I get it but it's sad to see," you responded.
"I'm sure with time it will get better," Jed said with a sympathetic look. "So you said you write books right?" he asked making you feel a bit nervous. You always disliked showing people your work as usually they found it boring or simply didn't care about the topics.
"Yeah, sometimes," you said trying to play it off. However, Jed was curious and that left you hoping you wouldn't embarrass yourself.
"What do you write about?" Jed asked.
"A lot of things," you replied trying to brush it off.
"Well I'm up to read a lot of things," Jed commented making you laugh a bit. He was nice and knew how to make you feel comfortable despite the fact that you had always been an awkward and nervous person.
"I gotta get back to work now," you said standing up and grabbing your trash to throw it away. Jed just nodded and you walked out of the break room feeling a bit bad you didn't tell him more. It wasn't personal you just didn't talk a lot about your writing with people because of what it entailed.
The rest of the day went by slowly and you were excited when you got home. You decided to cook something easy as you wanted to take a break from a long day and started getting food out of the fridge. The phone on your kitchen counter started ringing and you sighed as you walked over.
"Hello?" you asked as you picked up the phone. You waited a bit but heard nothing and decided to hang up. Maybe it was a wrong call or something. You went back to cooking and when you were done eating you went to bed clueless as to who had called you.
