You hadn't slept well that weekend and felt more tired than usual as you walked into work. You hadn't arrived slightly earlier as you usually did in fact, you had made it right on the dot having to had rushed through traffic hoping not to be late. Sure, nothing had come out of the call but it still left you a bit shaken. It had gone quite far for just being a prank call. The chair felt a bit comfier than usual as you sat down reminding you of how fatigued you were. You stared at the stack of papers sitting on your desk and got to work. You had looked over at Jed's desk to see that it sat empty. Maybe he was out doing more field work. You had been right and after a while he finally showed up holding some prints in his hands. He stared down at them looking them over as he walked to Bob's office. You tried not to be distracted and went back to correcting the papers in front of you.
"Hey, could you get some more coffee packets from the grocery store?" Samantha asked causing you to look up from your desk.
"Um Yeah. Which one?" You asked trying your best to look attentive.
"The one across the street has the brand we typically use. Here's some cash for it," she said counting out the money before she put it into your hand.
"Ok how much do we need?" You asked as you put the money in your pocket.
"Just enough for this week," she responded before heading back to her desk.
You started walking to the front door when Jed had cut you off.
"They making you do another coffee run?" he asked with the small smile he always did that caused your heart to skip a beat.
"Yeah, and don't expect the coffee here to taste any better than before," you added. He chuckled a bit and you lit up at the approval.
"You know if you want good coffee I can take you to the place I usually go to for lunch," he said making you pause for a moment. You tried not to look overexcited despite feeling so.
"That would be great. I kind of need a new place to go to anyways. I don't know too much around town," you stated. Even though you had been here for a few weeks you hadn't been out much, other than to get some groceries.
"Just let me know when you get your lunch. I can usually take mine whenever," he replied.
"Around 12 usually if I don't get anything else added to my work beforehand," you stated.
"Well be ready for some amazing coffee," he smiled making you blush a bit.
"Will do," you replied before he nodded and started to walk away.
You started walking down the street before crossing at the crosswalk and heading inside the small grocery store located across the gazette. You walked down a few isles confused before you stopped to look up at the isle numbers trying to find any signs stating where to find the coffee.
"Lost?" a lady asked as you turned around. She looked around your age and had a uniform on indicating she worked here.
"Yeah actually. I'm looking for the coffee," you stated.
"That's right over here on isle 2," she stated as she walked you over.
"Thank you," you said as she nodded.
"You new in town?" she asked.
"Kind of. I moved here a couple of weeks ago," you replied.
"What kind of person would move to a town with a serial killer? Sorry. Just curious," she said and it made you laugh.
"Honestly I'm still not sure," you said lying a bit.
"Well if you need help finding anything else I'm here. My names Sara by the way," she said before lookin down at her name tag. "You probably could see that though," she added.
"I'm (y/n)," you said in reply.
"Well I gotta get back to work before I'm yelled at. You know how it is," she said making you laugh again. She seemed very straight forward which was nice since you could barely hold a conversation.
"You can just tell them I needed help knowing exactly which brand of coffee was best," you added.
"Just don't get that one on the bottom shelf," she said.
"That's exactly the one my boss asked for," you replied making her laugh.
"Good luck," she said before waking away.
After picking up some packs of the coffee you walked up to the counter and took the cash out of your pocket before paying for it. The walk back to the gazette was short and you immediately headed to the break room to stock up the coffee.
"Couldn't get a better one?" Brad asked making you frown a bit.
"Got the one I was asked for," you stated slightly annoyed at his antics.
He rolled his eyes before replying.
"I need the article on the bake sale this weekend edited before lunch," he said causing you to curse under your breath.
"Got it," you replied before leaving the break room being done with your task. You probably looked annoyed as Jed furrowed his brows and gave you a small frown.
You mouthed "Brad," and he nodded before looking back down at his work.
Eventually you finished editing the articles Brad had asked for and dropped them at his desk before looking up at the clock. 11:58am. You walked back to your desk and cleaned it up a bit before Jed walked over to you making your anxiety rise a bit.
"You ready?" he asked as you just finished cleaning up the papers on your desk.
"Yeah," you said.
"My car?" he asked and you nodded.
"Mine can barely run," you added making him laugh.
"Well mine isn't too much better," he stated making you smile.
Jed opened the door for you again and you smiled before getting in the passenger seat.
"So how far is it?" you asked as he started the car.
"Like a 5 minute drive. It's not that far," he said before backing up the car before pulling out of the parking lot.
The drive to the coffee shop was short and you looked up at the sign outside realizing you had passed by it a couple of times while driving around town. You made a note to yourself as you stepped out of the car and Jed led the two of you to the entrance opening the door yet again.
The sweet smell of baked goods hit you as you walked into the small shop and you suddenly remembered how hungry you were. You had sat down with Jed at a booth far away from the rest of the customers and the nervousness had kicked in. It had been a long while since you actually hung out with anyone else.
"Jed it's good to see you again!" an old man immediately greeted giving you a feeling of relief as you were unsure how to break the ice. "And you brought a lady this time!" he added making you smile a bit.
"It's good to see you too Bill," Jed responded with a bright smile.
"So what's it gonna be today?" Bill asked.
"Do you still have any of those cinnamon buns?" Jed asked and Bill frowned.
"Ran out of those this morning. Been popular ever since the article you wrote talking about them," Bill laughed.
"I gotta start coming earlier in the mornings then. I guess I'll just take my usual coffee," Jed replied.
"And you young lady?" Bill asked turning to you as you continued to look at the menu in front of you.
"I guess I'll just take a coffee and one of the donuts," you said as you gave him the menu.
"Alright I'll be back in just a moment," Bill said as he walked away.
"So you wrote an article on this place?" you asked curiously.
"Yeah back when I was still newer on the job I wrote it as a short side piece. Thought the place deserved a bit more attention," Jed said looking at you. You had never been good at eye contact and with him it only made you feel more nervous. You couldn't help but look down awkwardly at the table hoping he wouldn't think too much about it.
"That's nice. What made you wanna work there?" you asked trying to continue the conversation. You had looked back up at him only to feel even smaller in your spot at the booth as his gaze met yours.
"I've always enjoyed writing. And I like getting information out there to people. I think it's important. Especially in times like these I think people need it," he stated as he continued to look at you.
"That's kinda how I feel. Though I also like writing because it can be anything you want. Like...." you tried to think of the word but couldn't.
"Escaping?" Jed asked. Something in his eyes changed. It felt like they had gotten darker but you weren't sure.
"Yeah. Exactly," you said as you stared at his eyes. You tried to make out the emotion but you were interrupted.
"Here you go," Bill said as he set down the coffee and food in front of the both of you. "Anything else I can get the two of ya?" he asked.
"Im good," Jed responded before looking at you.
"I'm fine too thank you," you said and Bill nodded before walking away.
"You still haven't told me what you write about," Jed smiled playfully as he picked up his cup of coffee. You looked at him for a second before looking back down at your plate.
"Mainly horror," you said before taking a bite of your donut giving you an excuse to not say more.
"I wouldn't take you for a horror fan," Jed said with a surprised look.
"This donut is really good," you said truthfully but also as a way to change the subject.
Jed gave you a look you couldn't quite distinguish but you were sure he noticed how uncomfortable you seemed.
"Yeah you should try their cinnamon buns when you get the chance," he said still with an unsure look.
"Sorry, I just. People think I'm weird for liking horror," you felt the words stumble out as you looked nervously at him.
Jed grinned and you felt your stomach tense unsure of what he was gonna say. "I get it. I thought you were squeamish," he said and you could feel yourself flush with embarrassment as he had remembered what you said before.
"Yeah, but I mean that's different," you stated before looking down at the napkin Bill had set down next to your coffee. You began to fiddle with it as you could feel his stare still on you.
"No, I understand," he responded before drinking more of his coffee. "I don't think it's weird though. In fact, I would love to read it if given the chance," he added. His sincerity made you smile a bit and calm down but you still didn't want to stay on the topic.
"Thanks, its still in its draft form though. Speaking of which, I have a lot of drafts to get through. Brad has so many articles he tries to write before deciding and I have to edit them all even if they don't get picked," you said feeling slightly annoyed.
"Yeah he's always been like that. Treats every intern like his personal assistant," Jed stated making you laugh.
"I wouldn't care if he was nice," you added.
The rest of the lunch was filled with small talk before Jed insisted on paying for your meal as well and you ended up feeling a bit bad. When you had returned to work you spent the whole time trying to finish editing the work left at your desk and reorganizing one of the supply closets that had been quite messy. The day went by quickly and you found yourself exhausted by the time you went to bed. As you laid down you couldn't help but feel like something was off. You thought it was the phone call that you had gotten the other night. You tried to shake the feeling and when you did you sighed as you fell asleep.
