Another Day

The day after had been quite the wreck. You left Sara's early despite her protests and drove yourself home for a quick shower before heading out to work. As you got ready you couldn't help but remember the events of the night prior. Sara came home crying and had explained to you that Josh had been murdered. Apparently they found him dead in one of the upstairs bedroom. It hadn't only been him though. It had also been the guy with the green mask that had talked to you. They found his body laying outside in the backyard near some bushes. Everyone thought he had just been passed out from the booze. You had been lucky enough to not witness it. "To not be one of them," you thought to yourself.
The pounding in your head didn't cease even as you chugged the coffee before you. You grimaced slightly at the flavor. It still hadn't improved as Bob insisted you continue to get the brand he enjoyed. Probably because it was the cheapest. You had been working on a stack of papers that had been left on your desk making tiny corrections as you skimmed through them. You heard footsteps pace towards you causing your head to shoot up only to see Jed worriedly half jogging to you.
"Hey, I couldn't get a hold of you on the phone. I heard the message you left but I wasn't home and I kept trying to call you after. Are you ok?" he asked in a semi hushed tone. Probably didn't want to get the whole offices attention. Which you appreciated as the last thing you needed were the "sorry" and "oh my gosh" reactions that would only heighten your fear of what you had been so close to. No. You didn't want to think of it.
"Yeah, I- I stayed at Sarah's and only got home this morning for a quick shower," you replied in a tired voice trying to put on the best fake smile you could. You had called him with Sarah's home phone but he hadn't picked up so you just left a message.
Jed seemed shocked at your response. He leaned down next to you and hugged you without warning.
"I was so worried," he said into your ear. His warm breath contrasted from the shakiness in his voice. He pulled back from the hug a bit before he continued "Listen, you don't need to be here ok? You should be resting at home," he began to say but you cut him off.
"I-it's ok," you said as his concern started to rub off on you slowly breaking down the wall you had tried putting up this morning.
"Jed! On the scene now!" Bob said as he poked his head out from his office. "Take (y/n) with you," he added before slamming his door shut.
"I can take you home first," Jed said but you shook your head 'no'.
"I'm going ok? It's fine," you said as you stood up and began to grab the things from your desk. Jed simply nodded though his eyes gave away his reluctance.
When the two of you had gotten in the car the silence finally broke.
"Why are you at work?" Jed asked looking over at you.
"I- I didn't want to stay home," you said looking down at your hands in your lap. "I want to go see," you continued as you looked up at him. "No one knows I was there ok? I- I don't want that kind of pity," you began but Jed shook his head.
"I know that can be tough but I was worried sick about you. You need to take a rest," he said but you had already made up your mind. You put your hand atop his that was gripping the gear stick.
"Jed, I know that maybe it's not the best to go but I want to. I- I think I need to," you replied trying to get him to understand.
"Ok, but if you need to go home tell me. I promise it'll be fine and I'll take the day off with you ok?" he asked and you nodded.
The drive to the scene was rather quiet. You had figured Jed knew you weren't really up for talking and instead he rubbed circles on the back of your hand with his thumb as his hand held yours for almost the entirety of the drive.
When you pulled up to the scene it was busy as usual and the steps were all the same. Jed and you had walked up to that all familiar yellow tape surrounding the area and you began to feel queasy almost immediately. You didn't talk to anyone. You only took notes and as Jed walked around taking photos your mind began to wander. You had remembered the blood on his mask and that he had followed you. Without thinking twice you retraced your steps towards Sarah's house. Your pace picked up as you began to near the area you had seen Ghostface at. Danny at.
As you neared the area you looked around on the cement below you. Nothing. You had thought maybe there would've been a drop. Maybe two. But nothing. You relived the memory in your head and as if you had forgotten the world around you, you collapsed onto your knees. The tears began to fill your eyes and pour down your face in streaks as you brought your hands up to wipe them. You heard hurried footsteps behind you again and you looked back to see Jed.
"Are you ok? What are you doing out here?" he asked and without word you got up and hugged him. He seemed a bit taken aback but held you closely to him.
"I-I need to tell you something," you said as you cried into his chest. His hand pet the back of your head softly before he responded.
"What is it?" he asked in a darker tone. It made you stay still for a moment but you realized he was probably just worried at your sudden outburst.
"C-can we go to the car?" you asked and he nodded.
The sound of the door closing as Jed finally sat beside you in the car made you take a deep breath as you realized what you had to say. You had to say something. You had already said too much.
"I can wait if you need a minute," he said as he put his hand on yours. You took another shaky breath before opening your eyes and looking at him.
"I-I," you started to say but the words felt stuck in your throat.
"It's ok. Deep breaths," he said putting his hand on your chest and you listened.
"I-I saw him Jed. I saw him," you spat out finally.
His brows raised at your words and you were worried he wouldn't believe you. You closed your eyes again and took another deep breath before opening them again.
"I-I was walking back to Sarah's after I had gotten too drunk," you said and watched as his brows furrowed. "B-but I got lost. I went alone and Sarah wasn't there. S-so I thought maybe if I went back to the party it would be ok. And instead. I-I turned around. Near where you found me earlier. And he was there. He was standing there," you said your breath starting to pick up again. "And he was watching me," you said before you began to cry again.
"He was watching you?" Jed asked as if in disbelief.
"He was just standing there. Looking at me. I-I think he had the blood on his mask," you said trying to get everything out.
"Are you sure that's what you saw?" he asked and you turned to look at him your crying starting to slow. He must've seen your reaction as he added, "it's just you said you were really drunk."
"Jed. I saw him. He followed me. I know it. I saw him at the party and I-I waved at him and he waved back," you replied almost defensively.
"Wait-wait. So you. You waved at him?" he asked still confused.
"I saw him at the party Jed. I was so fucking drunk I just noticed him standing there alone and I thought he was just another regular person. I mean he wasn't even wearing the same mask how was I supposed to know?" you asked and he looked at you with sad eyes again.
"Im sorry. I just. That's insane. Have you talked to the cops?" he asked and you shook your head no.
"I- I don't think they'll believe me," you replied as you took in another breath. This was a bad idea. This would only put Jed in danger. You should've stayed quiet. You were just terrified.
"So. You saw him and you haven't told anyone but me?" he asked and you nodded feeling ashamed.
"I know it sounds bad," you replied quickly but he stopped you.
"It's ok. It's probably a lot to deal with. Do you want to go report it?" he asked and you stayed silent for a moment considering it before shaking your head 'no' again. "O-k," he said a bit drawn out. "I'm here to support you no matter what ok?" he said and you nodded. "It's gonna be ok," he added reassuringly.
"What if he wants to kill me?" you blurted out. It had been a fear of yours since you had moved here. And now there was reason to it as he had visited you.
Jed looked at you a bit unsure of what to say at first before he finally began to speak. "I don't think he would do that. It might be too obvious. Especially, since you were already at the party," he said trying to comfort you though you knew better.
"But what if?" you asked again and he furrowed his brows.
"You're gonna be ok. I promise I won't let anything happen to you," he said and you shook your head again.
"You don't get it," you said causing a confused look on his face.
"Maybe I should take you home," he said and you shook your head as your heart began to pick up pace again.
"Jed I'm scared," you said in some sort of raw honesty that ached. You couldn't quite make out the expression on his face but you knew it was probably a lot for him to handle.
"It's ok. We'll figure it out together ok? If you want I can stay at your place for a bit," he said but you knew how horrible of an idea that would be. Despite the fact that you loved the idea of waking up with him there you knew that if you wanted to keep him safe you had to appease Danny.
"I don't think that's a good idea," you replied making him look confused. "I-I think I'm just freaking out," you said feeling upset at having to downplay your own emotions.
"Are you sure?" Jed asked and you nodded.
"I-I just wanna go home now," you said and he nodded.
Jed had driven you home and though he wanted to stay with you he had to go back to work to finish the article as he knew Bob would want to get it out as soon as possible. You nodded as he told you to call him at work for any reason you needed and that he would be back as soon as he could leave. He kissed your forehead gently before taking off and when you were finally alone you cried. As much as you could.
You paced the house for a bit until your nerves finally relaxed enough for you to sit on your couch with a blanket and you stared at the tv in front of you though you weren't really paying attention. As the clock neared 5 you knew Jed wouldn't be too much longer and you decided to get up and cook some food. You hadn't really made him much before other than your homemade waffles and you worried that maybe he wouldn't enjoy it. Though, you set your fears aside and began to chop some vegetables on a wooden cutting board.
When you saw Jed's car pull up in your driveway you let out a breath of relief as you finished up the food. You went to open the door and Jed walked in hurriedly. Putting his hands on your hips as he leaned down and gave you a kiss. After he pulled back he gave you a small smile before he began to speak.
"Are you making dinner?" he asked and you nodded.
"Yeah, I thought since you were coming over after and you would probably be tired and all," you said awkwardly and he let out a small chuckle that warmed you.
"You didn't have to. Especially, after-" he began but you stopped him.
"It's ok, it distracted me," you interrupted.
"Well, it smells amazing," he said and you giggled.
"I hope so it took me a while," you replied as the two of you walked back to the kitchen. He helped you set up the table and as if knowing you didn't want to talk much about it the two of you just had a normal conversation. His eyes had a hint of worry to them but you tried to reassure him you were fine by occasionally holding his hand.
After dinner he helped you wash the dishes and when the two of you decided on watching a movie together you laid your head on his lap as he caressed your hair and face. Eventually, he decided to speak up again and you looked up at him as he spoke.
"I know it's not something you wanna talk about, but are you sure you're ok?" he asked and you nodded.
"Yeah, I just think that it's gonna take some time," you responded and he nodded.
