You winced at the bright lights peering down on you as you entered the Roseville Gazette. This was it. Your new job as an intern. Fortunately, you were getting some pay and sure, going on coffee runs would be somewhat humiliating, but you were willing to endure it as long as you needed to. You had moved to Roseville hoping to become a journalist or even an editor. Anything to do with writing that paid. While on the side you worked on your novels. Your parents hadn't really agreed with your choices to skip out on college but you knew what you wanted and you weren't going to give up on it. You knew that could've helped your career a bit more but in reality you wanted nothing more than to just use all your saved up money to leave where you had grown up. Escape the place you had never really felt a part of to begin with. Little had you known you would be moving into a town with a serial killer problem. It didn't interest you as much as it terrified you. You tried not to pay too much attention to it but it seemed to be the only news displayed and it was everywhere. You continued walking behind the secretary as you observed the room around you. It had a few cubicles lined up near the middle and an extra office room to the left where you had assumed the boss would be. There were a few workers already preoccupied with their work but many of the desks were still empty.
"And this one is yours," the receptionist smiled as she pointed to your work area. A cubicle in a corner with the smallest desk you had seen. It was dusty and not well lit but it was yours.
"Once you get settled just start working on these tasks," she said, handing you a stack of papers. "All of these are either articles or quotes needing revision," she continued. You nodded keeping your attention on her until you saw it out of the corner of your eye. A tall man with shaggy brown hair had walked over to a cubicle not far from yours. "And if you need anything I'll always be glad to help," the lady continued and you smiled. "I'm Samantha by the way," the woman added before heading off back to her desk at the front.
You looked at the mess in front of you and got to work. You dusted it off before setting down the papers you had gotten and some of your pens and other supplies you had bought for yourself a day earlier.
"You the new intern?" the man from earlier had said. He had approached you while you cleaned and you hadn't even noticed. "I'm Jed," he smiled as he held out his hand.
"Yeah I am. Nice to meet you I'm (y/n)," You said shaking his hand. He had a firm grip as he stared into your eyes. You felt slightly awkward unable to meet them back without feeling a blush creep up to your cheeks. He was good looking. Hopefully he hadn't noticed how pink your face must have been.
"Nice to have a new face around here. If you need anything just let me know. They can overwhelm the newcomers pretty easily here. Giving you every boring task you can think of," he chuckled making your heart skip a beat.
"Definitely. I mean it's not my first intern job so I know how that goes but if I need any help I'll be sure to ask," you replied. Before he could say anything back the secretary from earlier had come back.
"Jed you're not bothering her already are you? They already gave her all of Brad's leftover work," Samantha said rolling her eyes.
"Well I'm not surprised by that. He always bites off more than he can chew," Jed replied to her. "Anyways I was just saying hi but I got a few things to do before going out and just getting more quotes," he continued. "Nice meeting you," he waved at you before walking off.
"You too," you waved back smiling. You turned to look over at Samantha who had just been standing there waiting.
"I know it's already a bit packed but Brad is gonna need some of that paperwork done before the end of the day and wanted me to make sure you could at least get the articles on the new bakery edited," she said as you slowly drifted into your own thoughts.
"Sure I'll get that done first," you said reassuring her. She walked away after as you sat down and sifted through the papers looking for the articles she had told you about. You got one of your red pens and began making your corrections as the day went on.
It seemed mostly calm and after finishing corrections on some articles you got up from your desk and walked over to Brad's. He was on the phone with somebody and you stood patiently waiting for him to hang up.
"What do you need?" Brad asked as he hung up the phone.
"I just came over to drop these off," you said showing him the papers you had completed.
"Just that? You could've just left them on the desk," Brad said ignoring you as he stared at the computer in front of him.
"Oh, ok. Sorry," you said as you left the papers on the desk and began to walk away. You couldn't help but feel a bit annoyed at how rude he seemed.
After finishing a bit more of correction work you decided to take your lunch. It was a smaller break room as the company wasn't a very large one and there was only a single table with a fridge and a coffee pot placed on an old counter. You took your lunch out from the fridge and sat down to begin eating when you noticed Jed walked in. He gave you a surprised look and it made you smile a bit.
"How's it going so far?" Jed asked as he took a seat across from you.
"Pretty good so far. Just doing a lot of editing and stuff," you replied somewhat awkwardly.
"Is that what you're hoping for? Editor?" he asked curiously before taking a bite from his fork.
"Well journalist or editor. Though I would prefer journalist. Anything really while I work on my writing on the side," you said before regretting the fact that you said you wrote on the side. You had a difficult time talking to people and even more difficult time when talking about your work.
"Oh, what kind of writing do you do?" Jed asked making you get nervous.
"Just novels really. Um, what do you do here?" you asked hoping to change the subject.
"Journalist, though I do a lot of field work," he replied casually and you felt somewhat relieved that you didn't continue on the topic of your writing.
"Oh, that's cool. What do you primarily write about?" you tried to continue the conversation focused on him.
"I help write the Ghostface articles," he said and you could feel a chill run down your spine at the name.
"That must be rough," you replied and he nodded.
"So are you also studying here?" he asked and you stayed silent for a moment unsure of what to say.
"Oh- I'm not going to college. Just here for the job," you said leaving him with a surprised face.
"Just trying to get right into it then?" he asked and you nodded.
"Yeah," you replied before going quiet.
It was a few seconds of awkward silence before Jed spoke up.
"So, did you just move here then?" he asked.
"Few weeks ago actually. It's nice," you said.
"Even with all the murders?" he asked and you laughed.
"Well, I wasn't really aware of it at first," you said laughing at your predicament.
"Really? That's surprising," he said before looking at the clock. "It was nice talking, but I gotta get back to work," he said before you also looked at the clock realizing you had almost went over your time.
"Oh, I didn't even realize," you said and he smiled.
"It's happens," he said as the two of you got up and you began to throw away your trash. Jed packed his things and as you walked up to the door he held it open and you thanked him.
The day went by quickly after that as you finished up on the articles you had left on your desk. As suspected though you knew that wasn't all as multiple people came up to you leaving you more things to work on and having to put away some newly ordered supplies for the office. When it was time to go home you packed your things and stood up. You walked to your beat up car in the parking lot hoping it would start. After a successful attempt and a short drive home to a more rural part of town you walked through your front lawn and up to your front door. It was a small house you were renting from someone who had thankfully not been charging much as they made enough money elsewhere. Apart from that, the rent wasn't too expensive in the area due to the recent murders which your landlord kindly neglected telling you. You had to kind of jimmy the old knob to get it opened correctly before walking into the semi run down living room. You plopped down on your brown couch that sat across from an entertainment center topped with a tv that the owner had left with the house. You didn't have too much furniture other than that and two bookshelves on either side of the tv lined with all your favorite novels, movies, and knickknacks you collected.
You decided to turn on the tv hoping to get a bit of a break from your long day. It had immediately caught your attention as the title on the bottom of the screen read "Ghostface still at large!" You shuddered at the thought but let curiosity get the best of you as you continued to watch the news.
"The community continues to mourn after the loss of Caitlin Greene. A 24 year old college student who was scheduled to graduate later this year was found brutally murdered in her home this morning. Her hands were crushed along with multiple stab wounds to her stomach and chest. The killer also known as Ghostface left another disturbing image posing with the corpse. We will not be showing this image out of respect for Caitlin and her family who have only stated 'We miss her very much'. This is Sandra with your 11 o'clock news," the lady said grimly.
