The next day at work had been hectic to say the least. The entire office was busy and people scurried across the room as they tried to get their work finished quickly. You were tasked with putting away more supplies and as you stacked boxes in one of the closets at the end of the room you heard a voice behind you.
"Looks like I'm stealing you for today," Jed said as you turned to look at him. "Bob wants you to get some field experience and I'm going to the scene today to try and get some photos," he added and you could feel your anxiety rising. The thought of having to be there only made you fearful.
"O-ok yeah. Just let me get my things," you said as he nodded. You quickly stacked the rest of the boxes before heading over to your desk and grabbing some things. Jed had waited patiently and when you were ready the two of you walked to his car. The cool air outside brushed against your face reminding you that it was the beginning of fall and you followed Jed as he lead the two of you to his car. He opened the door for you making you feel a bit embarrassed though still appreciative. As you slid into the passenger seat you noticed how clean his car was. You looked around curiously as he got in.
"Have you ever been to a crime scene before?" he asked and you shook your head no. "Well, it can get pretty hectic so just try to stick next to me if you can," he added.
"You don't think the body will still be there do you?" you asked as your stomach turned at the idea.
"No, they probably removed it by now," he said easing your worries. "If you don't feel comfortable you can wait in the car. I don't want you having to be around that if you can't," he said with a concerned look.
"I'll be fine. Thank you though," you replied. The drive was short and it reminded you how close all of this was. As you pulled up to the scene there were emergency vehicles practically lined up outside along with vans from various news stations trying to get coverage. The whole thing reminded you how real all of this was and you felt the weight of fear settle into your stomach. You knew it would lie there the rest of the day.
"Are you sure you'll be ok?" Jed asked causing you to break your gaze away from the window.
"Yeah. So what do you need my help with?" you asked as you saw him get his camera ready.
"Mainly just writing down quotes from people. Try to get a description of the scene if you can. Things like that," he said and you nodded.
The two of you stepped out the car and you held your pad of paper and pen tightly in your hands as you looked around. You followed closely behind Jed as you listened to the people around you describe the scene and news reporters standing in front of cameras pointing to the house behind them. The house was nice, a lot nicer than yours and the area seemed like it would have been just another quiet neighborhood if it had not been for the Ghostface. You watched as Jed snapped photos of the house before he got closer to the tape that separated the house from the street. You stared at the yellow tape that moved in the wind feeling your stomach begin to turn again and you had hoped that was as far as you were going.
"You again Olsen?" one of the cops said as you watched Jed approach them. He had a donut in one hand and you noticed he was carrying a revolver on his right hip.
"Is there anything you can say about what specifically happened?" Jed asked as the cop gave a disheartened look.
"Nothing more than the usual," he replied.
"Was it similar to the last ones? Do you think there's a pattern?" Jed continued talking.
"Almost the exact same. No DNA and no signs of forced entry. Im starting to believe this guy is an actual ghost," the cop replied. "Who is this gal you have with you?" he asked and you looked up from writing.
"This is (y/n). New intern," Jed replied and the cop nodded.
"Officer Moore. You can just call me Tom though," he said as he extended his hand. You shook it before speaking.
"It's nice to meet you," you said and he nodded.
"You two stay safe. I gotta get back to patrol," he said with eyebrows raised and you waved goodbye.
"They all know you?" you asked and Jed shook his head no.
"Tom is just usually the one guarding the scenes. Probably knows every reporter and journalist by now," Jed replied.
He motioned you to follow him and you did as he walked up to the side of the house. You could see some of the neighbors lingering outside of their house watching the commotion. You knew what was going to happen next and you swallowed the spit that had accumulated in your mouth as you nervously followed behind. You felt bad knowing that they probably knew her. It was a small town and communities tended to be close knit. Jed walked up with an apologetic look and introduced himself to them and you watched as they nodded along. He introduced you as well and you shook a few more hands before looking down at your pen and paper and writing what they had to say.
"I remember her walking here every morning getting the paper off her drive way. I didn't see her this morning and it felt strange," a lady said as she was held by her husband. You could tell she had been crying and your hand trembled slightly as you wrote her words down.
"Did you hear any noise coming from the house?" Jed asked and they both shook their head no.
"Goodness no. If we had heard anything I would have done something," the lady replied as she had her hand against her chest.
"I would've gotten my gun. Son of a bitch got lucky I didn't hear anything," the husband spoke and you continued to write as Jed asked more questions.
You had continued to walk around more and wrote down any details you picked up at the scene while Jed took photos of the house. The whole thing just made your day feel darker and you couldn't help the frown on your face as you stared at the house knowing what had occurred in there. You pictured it in your head. Feeling guilty you tried to wash away the thoughts before looking up at Jed who had been looking at the house as well. When his gaze met yours he looked concerned again.
"I think we have what we need. Let's get you back to the office," he said and you nodded. "I'm sorry. I know it's definitely hard the first time you come to these things," he added trying to comfort you.
"I just can't even think about what it must have been like. The neighbors must be terrified," you said. Your voice quiet as you felt afraid of your own words.
When you had gotten to the car Jed opened the door for you again and you nodded in appreciation as you got inside. You felt a small sense of comfort as you sat in the car next to Jed knowing you would be leaving the area.
"Probably not the ideal second day of work," Jed said breaking the silence and making you laugh.
"No, though it was interesting. And at least it was with you and not Brad," you said before becoming quiet feeling nervous at what you had said.
Jed chuckled and you felt your blush creep up your cheeks as he looked over at you. "He already giving you a tough time?" he asked and smiled.
"Not much just- he seems kind of rude. Though maybe I caught him at the wrong time," you said.
"No, trust me he's always like that," Jed replied and you laughed.
At work you had given your notes to Jed which he thanked you for and you went back to reorganizing things in the office. The feeling of fear had lingered on throughout the day and you couldn't help but feel extra nervous when you got home that day. Your neighborhood was nowhere near as good as the one you had seen earlier. You didn't know any of your neighbors either as the houses were a bit apart. It was more rural and the street lights didn't even work properly as some of them kept dimming. You pulled into the driveway and looked around nervously before deciding you were just being paranoid. Although, you couldn't help but wonder. Were you next?
