Maki's POV:
Kaito has now settled back into well, functioning again. His grandparents are extremely grateful and as am I.
And Kaito's first day back at school, I don't know how to feel...
Yes I do, happy, glad, relieved, my best friend is back from his seemingly everlasting coma.
That's it, nothing else, my best friend. My best friend.
Stop it Maki. Don't be stupid, you don't like him like that anymore.
I snapped out of my thoughts as he sat down at the breakfast table.
"Maki-Roll! Good to see ya! How did you sleep?" A wave of relief washed over me at the sight of the living, breathing, talking astronaut. He flashed me his signature grin, I couldn't help but smile slightly.
Stop smiling you look like an idiot. Normal people don't smile at the sight of their friends, stop it.
"Well, so what medication did they put you on-" Kaito interrupted me as he played it off with a laugh, "I slept nice, thanks for asking." He didn't say anything more. Why are things like this, why do I feel awkward? We're just talking like any friends would do. What is this invisible tension..
The Saimatsu couple sat down at the breakfast table, "Ah, hey Kaito!" Shuichi beamed, his hand intertwined with Kaede's. "Hey sidekick!" Kaito replied quickly, lunging straight into mindless conversation.
Weird.
The day moved on fairly quickly, about as fast as a usual day with Kaito. But something feels...off. I tried to ask Kaito questions about his experience but he'd avoid it somehow and play it off with some seemingly regular laughter but I saw behind it, he was faking. Once school had ended, I was determined to find out why he felt the need to act this way seeing as he never had before.
"Momota!" I yelled after him, he whipped his head around. "Maki-Roll? W-What's up?" A sweat rolled down his cheek, he knew I knew. And his stuttering sure didn't help his case.
"You're acting odd Momota. Is something wrong? Was it...something that happened in your coma..?" I asked bluntly, but my worry shined through.
"Why would you say that Maki-Roll? I'm all good! Did you hear about the-" I was sick of this, I grabbed his arm firmly; his eyes widened at the contact. "Stop it, stop avoiding the question. You don't have to tell me it all Momota that's not what I'm asking. I just want to know what's got you all worked up. I'm...worried." I admitted sheepishly, his expression softened as he looked at me. I broke him down. Or so I thought, he shook his head and furrowed his eyebrows as if to tell himself no before backing away from my touch. "Seriously Maki-Roll. I'm fine. I gotta go, I have lots to catch up on." He rubbed the back of his neck before running back to his room, leaving my hand empty.
He lied, he straight up just lied to my face....Does he not trust me..? Am I not pushing hard enough? That's it, I'm going to be like him and bother him until it comes out. I will not give up.
I waited until after our training, and God, did it feel so good to train with him again. He was back at his past athletic ability which was reassuring.
Although something blocked him from being as pushy as before, I knew it must have to do something with this surrounding tension.
Shuichi was excused to leave early for he promised Kaede he'd do something with her which left Kaito and I to our tensions. He always broke these tensions, but this time he used it as a shield that I knew I must eliminate. This time I wouldn't let go of him, it didn't matter what he said.
