Chapter 8
The next 2 weeks passed like a haze. We were playing European Handball in gym. No matter how much that confused me, I did my best not to question it. Algebra III was as interesting as its ever going to be. And history was about the same dead people that I've read about my whole life.
I had spent most of my time at home, reading through my father's books. He loved to read as well. It amused Seth that while he was reading, every other kid in the country was probably partying or something. He preferred this anyway. The smell of the books, of the quiet, of his father, were all that he needed. He still missed him. It was hard to walk through everyday without his father.
He used to say that a book has the greatest knowledge there is. He said reading a book was different from real life. In a book, you could see all the aspects, even before the character does. In real life, your the character, and your oblivious and blind to everything. I guess that's why I always loved them. I could t stand not knowing what was coming next. My phone rang.
"Hello?" I asked as I answered the phone.
"Hey Seth. The pack wants to meet up at Sam's." Quil said.
"Sure thing. I'll be right there." Seth put down his book, them ran outside.
He ran as fast as he could. He wanted to escape. From everything. From school. From my books. From my father. He started picking up more and more speed. Faster. And faster. Until his hands became paws and his screams became roars. He ran. And he didn't look back.
When he was a few feet away from the cottage, he went back to his human form. Sam, Quil, Jacob, Jared, Paul, Leah and Embry waited for me inside.
"Nice. Now everyone's here. We have patrols to do." Seth took a seat next to his sister. "Quil, Jared, Paul, you guys are gonna take the west side of the forest, near the ravine. Jacob, Leah, Seth, you guys take the east." Jacob turned around.
"As long as Seth can keep up." The pack laughed. Except Sam.
"Me and Embry will run north toward the cliff. Now lets go run."
I went east with Leah and Jacob. We were silent for a while until Leah finally spoke.
"So Seth, how's school?"
"Hell." He thought of his classes, his non existant friends, and his ridiculous teachers.
"It doesn't seem that bad." Leah thought. "There has to be something good." And without trying, I thought about Bree. All our conversations, how she never smiles, her hair, her scent... Then I remembered that Jacob and Leah could see it, but when I realized it, it was too late. They both stopped.
"No," Leah thought, "no! no! no! no! no! no!" She paused. "She's a Cullen. She's dangerous."
"What?" I thought. "I didn't know. I just thought she was friendly."
"Friendly? Friendly?! She's pale, she drinks blood, Seth! She's a monster. A bloodsucker. A.."
"Stop. She doesn't seem anything like that. And where just friends, so calm down."
"Calm down! You cannot honestly like this girl. And I know you like her because I can see it! Just get over it. She's not like us." Jacob stayed silent and so did I. I didn't want to start a fight with my sister. So we just kept running. We had a job to do.
