Chapter 16

Renesmee Cullen never had much to hide. Or much to worry. She didn't hide anything from her parents, they had a special relationship. She could trust them. She told them everything, even the embarrassing stuff. So when Bree tells her that she's dating a werewolf, she's shocked that she would tell her. They had never been close. Bree had always pulled her hair, made fun of clothes and switched around her shampoos. Lets just say they weren't exactly friendly.

She has shown up the next morning at Renesmee's house. Her parents had left early to go to work. She was at the marble table eating breakfast alone, when there was a knock on the door. Who could be there? I hope mom and dad weren't expecting anyone, she thought. She walked to the door, only to see Bree standing there smiling at her. Bree never smiled. It was weird. Her smile began to fade, because she couldn't keep it up long. It wasn't a real smile. She looked down.

It's not that Bree had ever disliked Renesmee, deep down she was kinda jealous. She had gorgeous reddish brown curls that ran to her stomach, big brown eyes, and plump lips. She had been the star of this family for years. Everybody loved her, kinda like Riley, but more. He parents always pampered her, she had tons of friends, and was just an all around good person. It made Bree feel like she was an outsider.

"Hi!" Bree tried to be cheerful. It didn't work.

"What do you want?" Renesmee asked. Bree was surprised. Renesmee was never rude.

"I wanna talk about something." Renesmee narrowed her eyes, opened the door and waited for Bree to walk in. She took one step in the house and looked at Renesmee. For a few minutes, they just stared at each other.

"Ummm. I wanna talk. About something that's not in my area of expertise."

"Like what?"

Bree hesitated. "Boys."

Renesmee's eyes widened.

"Oh," she walked toward the table and motioned for Bree to sit down, "Oh. Oh!"

"Yeah.. You see how awkward this is for me."

"Yeah I do." Suddenly, Renesmee smiled.

"What?" Bree asked, confused.

"It's just... You came to me. Of all people. You hate me."

"I don't hate you. I just never particularly liked you." They were silent or a moment.

"It's pretty close, Bree."

"Sorry." Renesmee smiled again.

"So how did you meet this boy?" She wanted all the details Bree could tell.

"School."

"What does he look like? Does he play a sport? What's his name?" Renesmee was getting excited, Bree was horrified.

"Cool it with the questions. I'll tell you everything."

"Ok."

And she did. About the imprinting, their date deal, about his kind, his face, his eyes, his smile... Bree could tell Renesmee was happy for her, but the fact that he was a werewolf confused her. Vampires and werewolves? Together? And soulmates too? This is some freaky stuff.

"Did you tell Carlisle?"

"No." Bree answered.

"Esme? Riley? Alice?"

"No, no and definitely no. Your the only one who knows. Besides him of course."

"What? My father is a mind reader. How exactly am I supposed to keep this a secret?"

"Just think of school or something while he's around. I just.. I needed to tell someone I trusted."

Someone she trusted. Renesmee wasn't necessarily the first person she trusted. She couldn't tell Liliila because she was part of the wolf pack. Well, not technically, but she will be and it would only be a matter of time before they know. I'm surprised Seth could keep it all in. The kid has restraint.

"Thanks." Renesmee said. Another silent moment. They had too many of these. They were sisters for crying out loud, they shouldn't have silences this often. And for a second, Renesmee wished everything was different. She wished she was human. That her and Bree would talk. That they could date any boy they wanted no matter the race. She wouldn't have to deal with mind readers, or fortune tellers or mood controllers. She could be a regular person with regular problems, but that wasn't gonna happen any time soon.

"Umm," Bree started, "Do you wanna sit next to me, or something, at lunch? We could talk more there."

"Sure." Renesmee suddenly felt like she had a sister. Bree moved in to hug her and she let her. It was awkward, but it was a start.

Later that day when her father came home, she thought about her French class instead of Bree's unplanned visit. An her father said nothing, although she suspected he was suspicious. No matter. She walked on and felt no guilt toward helping her sister.

For the first time in her life, Renesmee Cullen had something to hide. And it was grand.
