Dean opened the door to see an angry Cas waiting for him.
"What are you doing home so soon?" Dean asked.
"Late," Castiel corrected. "The word you're looking for is late."
"What are you talking about?"
"Where is your phone?" Castiel searched Deans's pockets for the device.
"In my room...what do you mean by late? Cas?" Dean ran after Castiel who was charging up the stairs to retrieve Dean's phone.
"Cas? What is this all about?"
Castiel was scrolling through Dean's text messages muttering under his breath. "Oh my goodness..." Castiel said.
"What?" Dean demanded.
Castiel sat down. "It's a boy."
"What?"
"We're having a boy, Dean. A boy! We're having a son!"
"What--how do you know?"
"The appointment was today, Dean. You were supposed to pick me up at one. I left you a note!"
"Where? I didn't see a note."
"Near the kitchen window," Cas explained.
"Near the kitchen--uh! It was the thing that blew out the window!"
"The window and was closed."
"I opened it this morning."
"And you didn't bother to see what it was that flew out of the window?"
"I didn't know! Besides, you could have called me."
"I did. At one, but my phone died."
"That would explain the buzzing. What are you doing?"
"Calling Cassidy," Castiel was pressing buttons on the cell phone and put it up to his ear.
"Hello. I would like to apologize for our absence at your appointment...yes, I am very disappointed that we missed it too...I would love to see pictures of the fetus...okay. You can come by on Tuesday. Goodbye." Castiel handed Dean the phone.
"But Cas, I have work on Tuesday," Dean pointed out.
"How unfortunate. Cassidy is coming over at eleven."
"You know I can't get out of work for eleven!"
"Did I? That's right, I did. Silly me." Castiel stalked off and Dean stood in the room, paralyzed with guilt. It was his fault that Castiel didn't get to be at the baby's appointment. But that was no reason for Dean not to get to see the pictures.
"Dammit!" Dean kicked the bedpost. He ran his fingers through his hair and walked out of the bedroom and into the hallway. He was going to go downstairs when he heard sounds coming from the nursery. Dean had not been in there since they moved all of the stuff out of it.
Dean peeked into the room and saw Castiel sitting in the middle of the floor. He was talking to someone that Dean couldn't see.
"--pick out paint. The choice for boys was between sea foam and royal blue. I'm thinking the sea foam but lately I've been thinking this lollipop lime color would look nice. What do you think?" Castiel stood up and taped a green paint sample to the currently white wall.
He stood back and compared the three colored samples that were there. "Yes, the lime is the best. Good choice."
Dean hadn't felt as terrible as he did that day in years.
