Dean woke up a few weeks later and sat up in his bed. Cas wasn't there, as usual, and Dean stretched his back and arms. Scratching his upper thigh, Dean rolled off the bed and opened his drawer to find a clean pair of jeans.

The drawer was empty and Dean muttered, "Screw it," before slamming the door and groggily walked down to the kitchen. "Hey, angel," he rubbed his eyes.

"Hello, human." Cas smiled goofily and handed Dean a plate of food.

"Why so chipper this morning?" Dean grunted.

"Don't you remember? Cassidy and Sam are coming over this afternoon. You should probably put some pants on," Cas walked by Dean and slapped his butt.

"Maybe if someone did some friggin' laundry around here," Dean aggressively took a bite of his bacon.

"Get over it, Mr. Grumpy. You could do laundry too, you know."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Dean sighed. "I've been thinking..."

"About what?"

"When the baby is born, I think you should quit your job."

"What?" Cas exclaimed.

"Or at least take time off. Not like a permanent thing or anything. Just so someone's home to take care of the little guy. Or gal."

"Why can't you take some time off?"

"My job pays way better than yours. And you're more of the...mothering type." Dean smirked at Castiel.

"Sure. That makes sense. Except I think you mean fathering type. I'm not a woman."

"Nope. Pretty sure I meant mothering."

The couple laughed together because they both knew Dean was kidding. Cas was getting better at distinguishing seriousness for Dean's frequent goofiness.

They spent the rest of the morning cleaning the house. Cassidy rang the doorbell around noon and Sam, who was late, walked in the house at twelve-thirty.

"So when's the next appointment?" Sam asked.

"Next week," Cassidy replied. "Hopefully we'll be able to find out the gender."

"What are you hoping for, Dean?"

"Anything would be fine. As long as he doesn't end up like you," Dean cracked a grin and gently punched his brother in the arm.

"Hey, Dean? Remember when we were at the bar?" Sam asked.

"Yeah. Oh, you had something important to tell me, right?" Dean replied.

"Yeah, that's what I was going at. Um...I'm thinking about going back to Stanford."

"Really? That sounds like a great idea. Are you going to apply soon? There's no way they'd reject you, baby brother."

"That's the thing. I've already applied...and I've been accepted. Classes start in three weeks..."

"Sam, that's great!" Cassidy chirped.

"Congratulations, Sam," Castiel said.

"Good job, man. I'm really proud." Dean slapped Sam on the shoulder.

"Are you going to be back in time to see the baby?" Castiel asked.

"Well," started Sam. "I'll have to see how busy my classes are. And also if I'd be able to fly out here."

"It's fine, man," Dean assured. "You can come visit whenever you need to. Wait--is Monica going with you?"

"We've talked about it. We both want to be out there together but..."

"But what, Sammy?"

"The only way we could do that would be--never mind."

"What?" Everyone inquired.

"I can't tell you. I'd promise Monica I'd wait."

"C'mon, Sam. Can't start with something like that and leave us hanging!" Dean complained.

"I'm sorry, guys. I'll tell you some other time. Just not today, not right now."

Everybody remained inquisitive and would randomly bring Sam's mystery up in conversation, only to be brushed off. They discussed Cassidy's life and why she got into being a surrogate mother.

"Well," she began. "When I was seventeen, I got pregnant by who I thought was my true love. He ended up leaving me as soon as he found out. I ended up giving the baby up for adoption. That was really hard but to me, it was the only option. When I saw the pure joy on that couple's face when they were handed their baby for the first time...it was so surreal. I realized I wanted to help other people who wanted to have children but couldn't, for whatever reason."

"That's deep," Dean said after.

"And extremely noble," Castiel added.

"Stop," said Cassidy. "I'm blushing."

The rest of the night was quiet and everyone laughed and drank--Cassidy drinking nonalcoholic beverages--late into the night. Sam ended up sleeping in the guest room and Dean drove Cassidy home to make sure she made it there okay.
