Dean and Cas were sitting in the kitchen drinking beer. Cassidy was in the bathroom. After Dean heard the toilet flush, the water ran and Cassidy opened the door.
She was quite large at this point. Her feet pressed flat against the floor as she walked and her stomach bulged out in front of her. Cassidy was only a week away from her due date and everyone was excited.
"So," Cassidy said as she eased herself into one of the chairs. "How is your brother doing at Stanford?"
"He called the other day. He seems to be doing pretty well."
"How are you feeling?" Asked Castiel.
"Pretty good for being a fat, pregnant woman."
"Well you sure as hell look it," added Dean.
Castiel glared at Dean and Cassidy said, "No need to worry, Cas. Dean's not going anywhere. At least not because of me."
"I didn't mean..."
"I know, sweetie. It's okay. Remember: this," she rubbed her stomach. "Is strictly business." They all laughed, even Castiel.
Cassidy exclaimed in pain and clutched her stomach.
"Are you okay?" Castiel jumped up from his seat and looked around nervously.
"Yeah...I'm fine," Cassidy relaxed a little bit. "Just contractions."
"You mean the baby's coming? Now?"
"No, they're just Braxton Hicks. Nothing to be concerned about. We don't have to worry until they're minutes apart. These ones are hours."
"Don't worry, Cas," Dean soothed. "When the baby is ready to come, Cassidy will know. And so will we."
"Still," said Castiel. "I don't like the thought of Cassidy going into labor without one of us there. Cassidy, I want you to stay with us until the baby comes."
Cassidy was going to say something but paused.
"Way to be indirect, Cas. Geez! You don't have to stay here, Cassidy. But you are more than welcome too. We do have an extra guest room if you'd like." Dean offered.
"That's really sweet and all, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea."
"What do you mean?" Asked Castiel.
"Well, I have read that having a good relationship with the parents you're having the child for is a good idea. But I think that might be going a little too far. After all, once the baby's born, I won't be hanging out with you guys anymore."
"What?" Asked Dean.
"I'm not here because you guys needed a new friend. I'm doing this so you can have a child. I've been hagiography out with you because I wanted you to like me and you're pretty great people, it's just..."
"Strictly business?" Muttered Castiel.
"Yeah. In sorry if you thought this was something more. I didn't mean to come off that way."
"No, it's fine," said Dean. "Offer's still on the table if you want to stay here."
"Thanks. I think I should leave now." Dean nodded and Cassidy grabbed her purse and went outside to drive home. Castiel listened for the sound of her car pulling away before placing his face on the table, buried in his arms.
"It's not fair," said Cas.
"I know. She's a really great girl," Dean added.
"What if the baby comes and we miss it? This is all our fault."
"Yeah," replied Dean. But he didn't mention that he wasn't upset that Cassidy wasn't going to stay in their guest room. He was upset that she want going to be their friend. It had been so long since Dean had a friend that wasn't also family.
