I gently and quietly opened the door to Kirstin's room to check on her. She sleepily lifted her head and blinked sleep from her brown eyes.

Kirstin: Scott? Are you okay?

Me: Yes, Kirstie. You can go back to sleep.

She whimpered and I could tell she wanted me to stay. I walked over to the bed and sat beside her. Immediately she climbed into my lap and I cradled her.

Me: Kirstin, what's wrong?

Kirstin: I don't want you to leave yet. What about Kailyn? If Mark attacked, she could be killed.

I rubbed her back gently then Mitch came into the room and smiled warmly at us.

Mitch: Morning Kirstin.

Kirstin: Mitch, is Kailyn okay?

Mitch: Kirstin, she is with Jessica so she'll be okay.

I noticed that Kirstin had yawned, so I gently laid her back down onto the bed, covering her body us so she could stay warm. She rolled over and got snuggled underneath the covers. I stood up after leaning down to hug her. She smiled softly before drifting into sleep. Mitch smiled at me as we headed outside. Mitch climbed into the drivers seat as I got into the passenger seat. When we arrived at the doctor's office, I felt nervous. There shouldn't be anything else wrong, but there could always be some strange infection or a unknown injury. Mitch sensed my nervousness and put his hand on my knee. He is such a good friend. I thought as he spoke calmly and gently.

Mitch: It's going to be okay, Scott. You're strong.

Me: Thanks Mitch.

He smiled at me as we got out after I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. We walked in and Mitch noticed my worry; therefore he held my hand. His brown eyes were filled with care and comfort. My name was called and Mitch stayed by my side without making me so dependent on him.

Dr. Adams: Good Morning, Mr. Hoying.

Me: Good morning.

Dr. Adams: It appears that you are on the right road to recovery. I would say that you are cleared to drive now. Your burns are almost healed. Good news!

Me: Thank you.

After we got checked out and got outside, both of us started jumping up and down in excitement. I couldn't wait to get home and tell Kirstin.

Mitch: See, I told you that it will all be okay. A clean bill of health! Now you want get home so we can tell Kirstin?

Me: Of course! Can I drive?

Mitch: Of course, Scott.

I got into the driver's side and excitedly started it. Anchor started playing at we both started to sing. As we turned onto the main road heading to Kailyn's house, my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID quickly and smiled when I saw that it was Kirstin.

Me: Hey Kirstin! What's up.

As soon as I heard her voice, my mood dropped. My heart shattered and dread rose inside me. There was somethine terribly wrong and more than likely with Kailyn. If it's that Victoria Peterson, I am going to kill her. I vowed to myself as I tried to listen to Kirstin's statement.

Kirstin: She's gone, Scott. She's gone.

Me: W-what?

Kirstin: Yes. Mark attacked and went to stab me, but Kailyn blocked it and took the knife for me. S-she s-saved me. Sh-sh-she isn't breat-breath-breat-breathing.

Mitch looked at me with tears in his brown eyes. And I knew exactly what could happen. Kirstin was ignoring her pain because of what happened.

Mitch: Scott, we have got to get home.
