"shit! i think someone is trapped in their bedroom!"
"don't worry!" the deputy chief fire officer yelled as he handed the hose to the fireman next to him. "i'll go in."
the fire had been burning for 20 minutes now.
jisung had been trapped in his bedroom since the beginning as his roommate had opted to save himself.
he was currently sat in the corner of his room, trying to get as far away from the door as he watched the smoke creeping in from underneath.
jisung had thought to cover his mouth and nose and had his blue sweater pulled over both as his eyes were watering, quickly blurring his vision.
he hadn't even known if he was going to live. as soon as he had noticed the fire, he had been locked in his room with his phone outside in the dorm's kitchen.
his fear had calmed ever so slightly once hearing distant sirens grow closer and closer to his building.
but still, the fire had not been put out and jisung was still very much trapped.
"jesus fucking christ!"
jisung perked up at a man's voice yet he didn't know whether he should move to make himself known.
any direction he would move meant he would have to get closer to the deadly smoke leaking in through his bedroom door.
jisung let out a scream as he heard a loud cracking before a beam from the ceiling came crashing down onto the floor.
the deputy chief heard the scream and whipped his head to one of the only doors that were closed, quickly realising that someone was trapped in there.
"hang on!" he yelled, though uncertain if it would even reach the person in trouble.
after all, the accommodation was filled with the sounds of crackling fire, not to mention the repetitive smoke alarm screaming there was smoke.
'no shit'. the deputy chief thought to himself as he lifted his leg over what must have once been a coffee table.
he turned back to the firefighter by the window who was holding the hose.
"can it stretch any further?"
"yes sir," the young boy nodded "i can probably hand it over to you."
"i'll need you and officer choi to come in with me." the older replied. "if i'm going to save whoever is trapped in the bedroom, we need to clear a safe pathway."
"got it!" the firefighter tossed the hose into the window, before climbing in himself and turning back to call out to the team below.
while the newest officer to the team was calling for officer choi to arrive, the deputy chief carefully made his way over to the bedroom.
"if you can hear me!" he began "hit the wall behind you!"
he waited until he heard quiet yet rapid knocks.
"okay, knock again when your mouth and nose are covered."
after he heard a few desperate knocks, the deputy chief slowly opened the door, careful not to disrupt the wood above the doorframe.
though as soon as he entered the bedroom, he noticed the beam that had fallen down between the back wall and the door was trapping the person in the corner.
his eyes darted around as he heard wheezing and coughing from the right side of the room.
"stay calm, okay? i'm going to get you out. try your best to keep your nose and mouth covered until we're out!"
minho pressed his hands down on the beam to make sure it was sturdy before he climbed over and let his eyes wander the dark room to find the person in danger.
as his eyes laid on the person, they widened in surprise.
"jisung!?"
jisung looked up to see a blur of yellow and white, he couldn't make out the face but he thought the voice sounded familiar.
before he could get too deep in thought, he felt his throat and chest tighten at the lack of oxygen.
he began coughing even harder, tears steaming down his face before he felt two arms wrap around his torso.
without being able to hold on much longer, jisung felt himself slip into unconsciousness from the lack of clear air.
the deputy chief caught him before he fell forward and lifted out a clean mask before fixing it over jisung's face.
he stood and lifted jisung over his shoulder before carefully turning back to the door.
he cautiously climbed back over the beam and walked out to see the fire had been put out yet the smoke had still not completely disappeared.
"we think we know how the fire started, sir-"
"-save it for once we're out." the deputy chief quickly replied as he walked over to the window. "the man's unconscious and we need to get him to the hospital and checked over."
"yes, sir!" both officers nodded as they helped their deputy chief and jisung into the fire truck's basket.
once they were lowered down, the deputy chief immediately took jisung over to the ambulance that had arrived shortly after the fire brigade.
"i'm not sure how bad the internal damage is, but he passed out while i was attempting to save him."
"we understand, sir, we'll take him to the university hospital immediately."
the deputy chief looked over the man on the stretcher as an oxygen mask was now being put onto his face.
jisung was soon lifted into the back of the ambulance as the deputy chief could only watch.
it wasn't until the ambulance had driven off that he noticed the presence next to him.
"you alright there, lee?" the chief, bang chan, asked as he rested his hand on his deputy's shoulder "you saved the guy, no?"
the deputy sighed as he turned to his superior.
"...that was jisung."
chan's eyes widened as he looked over his deputy's slumped posture.
"m-minho..."
minho sighed as he took off his helmet and rested it against his side.
"...that was the first time in 3 years i've seen his face."
