Jacklyn

*Evening*

I blinked a few times to get a clear view. I realized I was in my bed. I sat up and saw Kevin setting plates on the nightstand. He finally looked at me and smiled warmly.

"How are you feeling?"

"Hungry."

He let out a chuckle and took the bowl of noodles in his hand, starting to feed me. The silence felt awkward, so I broke it.

"Hmm, can you tell me what happened?"

"First, finish eating."

He avoided eye contact as he placed the spoon to my lips, but I didn’t open my mouth. Instead, I covered my mouth with my palm.

He sighed and said, "Eat for now, Jacklyn. We’ll talk during our walk."

"Ice cream?"

"I'll think about it."

"Ah, then I’m not going to eat."

"You'll catch a cold, my baby sister."

"I am not a baby."

"Yes, you are."

"No, I’m not."

"Okay, you’re not a baby. You’re old."

"No, I’m not that old."

"Then what are you?"

"I’m young."

"Okay, young lady, open your mouth."

Kevin and I stepped out of the house just as Ren's car pulled into his driveway. Kevin was locking the house.

"Shall we go?" Kevin asked, smiling. The Kevin from this morning seemed like a different person now.

"Hmm," I said, smiling back. We started walking in peaceful silence.

"Jacklyn?"

"Yes?"

"Did Ren do anything to you?"

"When?"

"Like yesterday."

"Last night?"

"Hmm."

"He brought dinner for me."

After that, everything went quiet. I broke the silence again. "What happened?"

"I’ll tell you when the time comes."

I fell silent, regretting the lie I had just told about Ren.

"Jacklyn, there’s a business trip tomorrow."

"Oh, for how many days?"

"Three days."

"What!? When are you leaving?"

"Tomorrow early in the morning."

"Three days is so long, Kevin," I whined.

"Until then, stay safe, okay?" he said strictly.

"Okay," I replied, looking down at my feet, pouting.

"Girls who pout don't get ice cream."

My eyes beamed at the mention of ice cream.

"Agh, I’m not pouting. Ice cream, pleaseee," I asked with puppy eyes.

"Don’t show me those eyes, I’ll melt," he said, covering his eyes and smiling playfully.

*Time Skip*

Kevin and I returned home. Now I was standing in front of the window, looking at Ren’s house. Strangely, the lights were off even though I had seen him drive inside earlier.

I was lost in thought when the lights in my room suddenly turned off. I sensed someone’s presence near the balcony door.

"Someone there?" I called out, scared, taking slow steps forward.

"Were you looking for me, baby girl?" a familiar voice said.

Ren!!?
