Jacklyn

"There's this man in my neighborhood."

"Who, babes?" Jeremiah's voice turned cold.

"The guy across the street," I pointed to Ren's house from the window, feeling uneasy at Jeremiah's change in tone.

"Ren Nathen?" Jeremiah's response was curt.

"Yes, how do you know him?" I asked, my excitement evident.

"What's so exciting about him?" His voice grew colder and deeper.

"How do you know him?" I asked again, my voice softer this time.

"Just continue," Jeremiah sighed. "I have a crush on him."

Jeremiah's expression was unreadable. He seemed angry and anxious at the same time.

"Jackie, don't even think about going after him."

"How do you know him?" I persisted, lowering my head. His reaction made me hesitant to share more.

"That's none of your business, Jacklyn," he snapped, raising his voice. "Some things are better left unsaid."

"What do you mean, 'with you'?"

"Just understand that Ren isn't your type," he said firmly.

"No one is my type for you. Not even Hendrix back then, and now Ren."

"Hendrix! Why does he matter now?"

"Because he was my first love, and you ruined it," I retorted.

"Your first love? Give me a break," he scoffed.

"Yeah, everything about me is just a joke to both of you."

"Both of us?" Jeremiah's voice rose in anger.

"Yes, you and Kavin."

"Your brother works hard to take care of you, and this is what you think of him?"

"I've never had any freedom in this house," I said bitterly.

Jeremiah took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "Think before you speak. Maybe the alcohol is making you say all this."

"Alcohol?" I protested as he took the bottle from my hand.

He gave me a stern look, warning me, "Jacklyn."

His use of my full name was rare and unnerving. Jeremiah, usually bubbly and sweet, had turned serious and intimidating. I didn't understand why.

"Go to bed," Jeremiah ordered, and I complied without a word, feeling regretful for what I had said earlier.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

"I know. Just sleep. We'll talk tomorrow," he replied with a slight smile, switching off the lights and leaving the room after planting a gentle kiss on my forehead.
