recap:

Hashirama pouted, knowing that Madara was also doubting him. He said, "Well, when you awakened the Sharingan, it was after you cut ties with me. . . I'm not sure how you got the Mangekyou Sharingan, but I do know how you got the Eternal Mangekyou. It seems that the Sharingan evolves with pain - the more painful the event you go through, the more powerful the visual prowess. . . I don't know the details of it, and since I'm not sure how you got the Mangekyou, that's the most that I've been able to figure out."

Madara thought back to when he had awakened his Mangekyou. The hell that Tajima Uchiha had put his sons through was unforgivable. . .

. . . and we continue with the sad flashback :(

Madara thought back to when he had awakened his Mangekyou. The hell that Tajima Uchiha had put his sons through was unforgivable. . .

Madara's friendship with Hashirama was his only escape from the war-torn world he lived. Once he lost it, something in him had changed.

The change scared Izuna - his older brother was growing darker and seemed like he was losing himself. He became obsessed with training, and he always wanted to be alone. Izuna just wanted the old Madara back. . . Still, the younger Uchiha noticed that the same change was starting to occur in himself, and he couldn't do anything to stop it.

The growing darkness in his sons wasn't something that worried Tajima - in fact, he actually saw it as a great opportunity for the clan. He knew that he could take advantage of that darkness, and the more it grew, the more powerful the Sharingan. Tajima knew that having two Mangekyou users would give the Uchiha clan a chance. . .

So, he gathered his sons in the woods one day, away from all of the other clan members.

"Sons, I have an order for you."

Izuna glanced fearfully at his brother. Madara had a blank expression on his face; he asked in a monotone voice, "What is it?"

Tajima turned around - he knew that he wouldn't be able to face them when he told them their mission. "You must kill your best friends."

Izuna cried out, "But Father -"

"This is an order. Do I make myself clear?"

Izuna had tears in his eyes, and he grabbed Madara's arm, silently pleading with him to do something. Tears formed in Madara's eyes, and he shook his head. He knew that they would have to go through with this - they couldn't disobey their father.

Madara's voice cracked slightly as he said, "We understand." He walked away, dragging his younger brother with him.
