Summer Falls"Say thank you, baby, " I say to my daughter as I fix up her sweater.
"Thank you Mr." my daughter said putting on the biggest smile. I couldn't help but giggle.
"You are too silly, and thanks, you sir," I said looking getting up from my knees as I look up.
Before I can even make full eye contact my daughter calls my name. I pick up other candies as I walk away.
I don't think I heard the guy's response I didn't have time to even really look back before my daughter grabs my hand and walks me away.
"Hey," the cashier said.
"Hey," I said back as Autumn screams "hey," we both start laughing.
"Shit," I hissed as I noticed my wallet isn't with me. "Mommy bad word," my little one says.
"I know sorry baby, do you know where I left my wallet?" I asked her as she shakes her head. Before I even know it I see a platinum card tap the scanner.
"It's okay I got y'all," a voice says but before I can even turn around my phone starts ringing. My body tensed at the thought of it being Autumn's father.
"Ohh hello summer speaking, ooh yes we'll be there shortly sorry for the hold up please give us a few minutes," I said speaking to the landlord.
"Autumn hurry up baby we're running late. Shit, I forgot thanks you sir god bless you." I said about to look up at him as my daughter dropped off our bags.
"Sorry mommy, I was trying to help," she said with a frown. "It's okay baby let me help you out," I said reaching over as I grab the bags off the counter.
"Ma'am you're holding up the line," an old voice says as I turn to look I see an old lady with a red face.
It wasn't like I was purposely holding up the line. "I know that, obviously I wasn't doing it on purpose." I stare as I make eye contact with her.
"C'mone Autumn, we're running behind time," I look down at my daughters as we walk hand in hand to the door.
"Wait," she said running back to the counter as she pass the man her pink skittles. I still didn't manage to get a full look at him at all.
She says something as she runs back to me.
We finally made it back to our new townhouse apartment, it screams home for me and Autumn.
Seattle is different from our hometown, the big apple. New York wasn't for the weak and I like to think me and Autumn were survivors.
This was a small town and a safe quiet one at that. Something we can keep busy and to ourselves. This is going to be just perfect I can feel it.
Our landlord didn't even have the time to wait up for us we just throw the key under our met. Tomorrow the movers are coming in and set everything up for us.
We have been sleeping in the hotel for three nights since we got here. But we wanted to spend some time at home.
Even if my grandmother was out next door neighbor she was too much sometimes.
"I love it, mommy," Autumn screams as she runs around our house as if it is not her third time here.
1 week later
"Runway walk," we scream in sync as we look in the mirror. It's my first day at work and her first day at school.
On an early Monday morning, we are walking in the hallway to Beyoncé as we pose.
There's no home I would want to be in than here. With my mini-me.
"That's our breakfast," I said as I heard the doorbell. "Thanks, nana, it means so much to me and Autumn," I said, grabbing the plate from my grandmother.
She is in her late 60s and has been nice to me and Autumn since we came here for my operation last month during our stay for three weeks.
Growing up she used to visit on holiday when she found out how alone I was in my pregnancy and how my parents forced me out on my own. She disowned her son.
She would help me out with cash and money when I was out on my own during college. Or on the run with Autumn.
But she found out that there was an opening to the apartment next to her and she was quick to hook me up so we can be neighbors while she helps me out with Autumn.
"Where's the little one? she asked, beaming in excitement.
"Hey nana," Autumn screams as she runs down the steps to hug her.
"I'm pulling a late shift tonight, thank you for watching her," I smiled at how this woman had been nothing but kind to us.
"No problem, I told you you're family, " she said smiling as she squeezed Autumn's little chubby chick.
As I drop off my baby girl I kiss her goodbye. "Bye cupcake be good okay? I love you, remember you and me?" I said, kissing her forehead.
"Me and you. I love you, mommy, go be a superhero," she said as she ran into her classroom. I loved how she saw me as a superhero. She was aware of things around her at such a young age.
I told her it's really important we don't mention the bad men I came up with instead of saying, father. She got used to us moving for a week and staying in hotels.
But October is coming up and her birthday is going to be a big for my little four years old. She going to have the best birthday because this year her father won't find us and fuck it up for us.
