3'RD POV:—"Hey Jimin, may I sit next to you?" Hiya asked, her voice a soft plea, as she nervously straightened the pleats of her skirt.Jimin glanced at her, his expression unreadable, though his heart leapt at the sight of her.
He wanted to say yes, to offer her a warm smile, but something about the abruptness of her request caught him off guard. It felt misplaced, out of sync with the carefully constructed distance he had tried to maintain.
"As much as I'd like to say yes, Hiya, I can't," he replied, his tone detached, almost mechanical. "Our seats are fixed, did you forget?"
The words came out sharper than he intended, but he couldn't help it. Even he didn't fully understand the reason behind his sudden coldness.Hiya's face fell slightly, a flicker of confusion passing through her eyes.
"I know that... It's just, my friend Hoseok wanted to switch seats so he could sit next to my desk mate. So, may I?" She shifted nervously, tapping her foot against the floor—a sign of her dwindling patience.
Jimin's gaze fell to her tapping foot. Before he could respond, Taehyung, who had been sitting nearby, spoke up with a hint of amusement.
"You know, tapping your feet while talking shows a lack of respect. You should be mindful of your gestures."
Jimin's brow furrowed as he turned to his brother. "You were eavesdropping on us?" he asked, a hint of irritation creeping into his voice.
"I wasn't, but I couldn't help noticing her actions," Taehyung replied casually, as he slid into the seat next to Jimin, his expression infuriatingly composed.
Hiya glanced between the two brothers, her confusion deepening. Why were they behaving so strangely? There was an undercurrent of tension between them that she couldn't quite place. It felt as if something had shifted, some unseen barrier had risen between them, and she found herself caught in the middle, unsure of what to say or do.
"Are you both alright?" Hiya asked cautiously, her voice tinged with nervousness. A faint blush dusted her cheeks, betraying her unease.
"I'm fine, and so is he," Taehyung answered, his tone dismissive as he squeezed Jimin's thigh, eliciting a weary sigh from his brother.
"Tae, go back to your seat. It's her spot," Jimin said sternly, his voice edged with irritation.
Taehyung raised an eyebrow but complied, rising from the seat with an exaggerated groan that grated on Jimin's already frayed nerves.
"Fine, fine. I'm going."
"Here, sit," Jimin muttered, shifting slightly to make room for Hiya. She bowed her head slightly in thanks and sat down, but the atmosphere between them was heavy, stifling.
She had wanted to strike up a conversation, to ease the tension, but the cold, unwelcoming expression on Jimin's face made her think better of it. Instead, she buried her head in her notes, hoping to escape the discomfort.
