chapter 5

"Thanks mom" I pull away from our hug. The doorbell rings. "I've got it" I put down my gift and go to the door.

I open it. "Happy birthday!" Derek passes me a bouquet of flowers and a box. "Thankyou der" I hug him. "You're welcome, are you having a good day?" He asks. I smile, nodding.

"Come in" I walk to the living room. He follows. We both sit on the floor. "Hi ellis" he says. "Hi" she says.

I open the box. "Ahh! Oh my god, you got me the earrings I wanted! Derek!" I hug him tight. He smiles brightly.

"Thankyou so much" I say. I kiss his cheek. "You're welcome" he clears his throat, scratching his head. I smile.

I open the card. I smile as two cinema tickets fall out. I read the card.

Happy birthday mer,

I hope you have the best day. I know you rejected me and left me depressed and lonely but I was wondering if you'd at least do me the honor of seeing a movie with me as my best friend.

Love, Your best friend in the whole entire world, derek.

I giggle. "I hate you so much" I say. He grins. "Fine I'll see a movie with you.. if you insist" I tease. He grins.

My phone buzzes. I gasp, grinning. "Hi Joshua" I smile, answering the phone. I walk into the other room.

Derek's pov:
She walks away. I sigh, picking up the cinema tickets from the floor. "You want something to drink or anything sweetheart?" Ellis asks. "No thankyou" I say.

I hear her giggling in the other room. I clear my throat, my heart clenching in my chest. "I should go, tell mer that I said bye please" I get up. "Okay" she says. I leave.

Merediths pov:
"Bye joshua" I smile. "Bye" he hangs up. I grin, walking back to the living room.

"Where did Derek go?" I ask. "He left.. went home" she says. "Oh" I say. I pick up the earrings he got me and put them in.

"Meredith, go to dereks" she says. "What? Why?" I ask. "He's upset!" She says as if it's obvious. "Oh, why?" I ask. "Oh my god" she says.

"Because I was speaking to Joshua?" I ask. "He just bought you what I imagine are very expensive earrings, and you just leave the room to talk to another guy" she says. "Oh" I say.

I grab my phone and go next door to his house. I just walk in and go up to his room without knocking. "What the- who let you in?" He sits up in his bed. "The door was open" I shrug.

"Oh brilliant" he says sarcastically as I climb into bed with him. "Thankyou for the earrings.. I love them so much" I hug him. "Good" he smiles.

He tucks my hair behind my ears. I smile. "They- you look absolutely perfect" he says. "Thankyou" I whisper. I cuddle into him. He wraps his arms around me. "I love you" he whispers. "I love you too.. bestie" I giggle. He chuckles softly.
