It is 12:30pm, which means lunchtime for the fifth graders at Mary Elizabeth's elementary school. Each grade has thirty minutes of lunch; kindergarten starts at 10am, first grade starts at 10:30am, Second grade starts at 11am, Third grade starts at 11:30am, Fourth grade starts at 12pm, and fifth graders go last at 12:30pm. It is scheduled this way so that each grade gets a chance to eat without the cafeteria being crowded. School ends at 2pm, which is enough time for everyone to eat, go back to class, and go home. Tom is a first grader, so he already ate. Ashley is a fourth grader, she ate already. Ellie is a fifth grader and the oldest of the three siblings, it is her chance to eat lunch.
Lunch is her favorite part of school because she does not have to hear her teacher's lectures and she gets to hang out with her secret boyfriend. Technically, he is not secret since her classmates know. Even her sister Ashley knows about him since they are sisters and they tell each other everything. But Tom and her parents do not know about him.
Ellie believes if she told her parents about her boyfriend, they would disapprove of her relationship immediately. She is only eleven years old and still in fifth grade. Even though her boyfriend is the same age and grade as her, she thinks that her parents would use the excuse that she's way too young to be falling in love with a boy. Also, her parents might say that she should focus on education rather than love.
She is serious about her education, though her class can get boring. Plus, she believes she's old enough to choose when to fall in love. Her heart is telling her that the boy she is in love with is perfect.
His name is Brandon, he's African-American who was born in Missouri but raised in Virginia. He is 5'8', which is tall for most male fifth graders. He plays for the school's basketball team, which is one of the many reasons Ellie fell for him. Other reasons are that he's cute, smart, funny, understanding, and kind. This is her first boyfriend and hopefully, her last.
"Baby boo, I'm happy to see you!" Brandon said, giving her a hug and kissing her on the forehead. She gushes being next to him, he always smelt and looked amazing. He did not disappoint today.
"How are you, my baby?" She asked him.
"I feel like a king!" He proudly replied.
"That's wonderful to know!" She is happy for him.
"I told my parents that I want to spend Christmas with you." He revealed. She is happy that her boyfriend was not afraid to tell his parents about their relationship. But she was worried because she still haven't told her parents about their love life.
"Aww, that's nice of you" She said, not knowing what else to say to him.
"Is it okay with your parents that I spend time with you during Christmas?" He asked. She sighed.
"What's wrong, baby boo?" Feeling concerned about her.
"I got to be honest with you. I haven't told my parents about our relationship." She told him.
"What do you mean? Are you afraid to tell them?" He questioned.
"Yes. I just don't want them to abruptly end our relationship because we're too young to fall in love or we need to focus on schoolwork." She explained.
"Baby boo, you're overreacting! I told my parents and they were perfectly fine with it." He said.
"I understand, but it's different for girls. Parents are more protective over girls than boys. They might be scared that I might have a baby or hurt." She explained the harsh truth.
"Ellie, you know that I will never hurt you for any reason. Plus, we're way too young to be doing the nasty and my private parts haven't fully developed yet. They have nothing to worry about." He told her, trying to calm her down a bit.
"Are you sure they will understand?" She asked, not too confident if she should finally tell her parents or not.
"It might some time for them to come around us being a young couple, but they will understand. Just tell them whenever you feel comfortable doing it." He explained.
"Alright. Can I ask you one more thing?" She asked, feeling relaxed.
"Yes, go ahead!" He said.
"What's for lunch because my stomach feels like a hurricane right now?" She asked.
